中文102 Final Oral Exam
For the oral portion of the final exam, please prepare to do a role play with me on a couple of the situations below. The oral exam will be scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday (5/17 & 5/18) in my office. A sign-up sheet will be posted on Glow shortly.
Situation 1:
Two graduating seniors are making plans for the dead week. The following is a profile of your likes and dislikes. Make plans according to the profile. Your friend is going to try to persuade you into going to New York. You need to persuade her to stay in Williamstown and to hang out with friends. (Feel free to add anything to your likes and dislikes list for persuasion purposes.)
Likes: to chat with friends,
to play tennis,
to swim,
to watch TV, especially tennis and basketball games,
to eat at restaurants,
to attend classical (gŭdiăn) concerts
to visit museums (you have never been to MassMoCA)
to go shopping
Dislikes: Do not like to run in the morning, because you cannot get up too early Do not like to watch foreign films,
Do not like to go to big cities (too many cars, too many people, cars drive too
fast,.….. )
Do not like to go to places too far, you want to rest, as final exams tired you out.
Situation 2:
You just turned 18 years old, and are going to a college about three hours away from home. You are asking your parents to buy you a car. You want to include the following when you plea your case:
1.You are a good driver since you have been driving for two years.
2.You want a car so you can come home to see your parents once a month.
3.Since there is no bus to take from your college to your home, a car would make sense.
4.You do not need money from your parents to buy gas for the car. You want to work
in weekends to make money for that. Moreover, oil price is not as expensive as before.
5.You want a Japanese car because you think Japanese cars are better than American
cars.
Situation 3:
Your friend bought a pair of shoes for you three weeks ago at 40% off. Now you want to return them because the sizes of the shoes are not the same: one shoe is size 7 and the other size 8. The clerk will tell you that the sale event was a special event and that customers had one week to return merchandise for refund. After a week, all sales are final. Then you find the clerk actually was your classmate in your elementary school,he doesn’t change too much. So you recognize each other. Finally he let you return or exchange for a new one.
1.First, ask your friend where is the shoe store and how you can get there by
bus(which includes the switch of two buses).
2.Make your case, give excuses (or reasons) for returning the shoes three weeks
later, and persuade them to let you return the shoes or exchange for something
else.
3.After recognizing the classmate, ask him/her for a Saturday dinner at your place.
During the conversation, please mention the location enquiry and the route
suggestion.
Situation4:
Your father is going to have his 60th birthday next month. You and your older sister are planning a banquet for him. Now you need to decide the kind of restaurant where to hold the banquet. Consider the following facts when you and your older sister make the decisions.
1)You estimate there will be about 60 people at the banquet, so the place has to be big
enough.
2)The price cannot be too expensive (high class) because you do not have enough
money, so the cheaper the food the better.
3)Your father prefers Chinese food. Although he has been living in America for 30
years, he still cannot get used to eating Western food.
4)Your older sister likes one particular Chinese restaurant, but you do not. Make your
case, and persuade her to go with your choice.
