Noble Prize Acceptance Speech——Robert Bunsen
Your Majesties,You Royal dies and Gentleman,
The burner I once described as having a flame of very high temperature and little luminescence and is, therefore, particularly suitable for experiments on the bright lines that are characteristic for these substances was quickly named the "Bunsen burner".
I have a honor that the essential piece of laboratory equipment that has immortalized the name of mine. What I did just to improve the burner's to aid my endeavors in spectroscopy, which remains a common lab tool to this day also helped me on the area of chemical research.
Within five years of the development of the burner, I was deeply involved with spectroscopy, together with Kirchhoff we invented another instrument: the Bunsen-Kirchhoff spectroscope. This instrument of chemical analysis proved to be of tremendous importance in chemical analysis and the discovery of new elements.
Using the techniques I devised, I had a discovery of cesium and following rubidium .The spectroscope paved the way for others to claim elemental discoveries and served as a springboard by which five new elements were discovered. These included thallium , indium , gallium , scandium and germanium. If a discovery can only limited in one area and do not have any contribution to any other subjects,it also can’t be regarded as a noble achievement. The aim of research is for practical application not abstract theories.
Although my work brought me quick and wide acclaim, I nearly killed myself from arsenic poisoning and it also cost me the sight of one eye - an explosion of the compound sent a sliver of glass into his eye. Talking about it I just want all of you have a clearly mind that the work worthy of awarded must be complex and dangerous.I’m glad that I didn’t give up and I finally find out that cacodyl was an oxide of arsenic that contained a methyl radical. This experience give me the confidence that as long as enough effort had been put on,you will surely get what you what.
Finally I want to express my sincerely thanks to everyone who works on chemical area,I know it’s a tough road, but it surly have it’s meaning to effect on the the progress of science.Again I thank you.
