我国食品工业在中央及各级政府的高度重视下,在市场需求的快速增长和科技进步的有力推动下,已发展成为门类比较齐全,既能满足国内市场需求,又具有一定出口竞争能力的产业,并实现了持续、快速、健康发展的良好态势。食品工业总产值年均递增10%以上,产品销售收入快速增长,经济效益大幅度提高,继续保持位列国民经济各产业部门前列的地位,为国民经济建设发挥着支柱产业的重要作用。
改革开放30年来,我国农业、食品制造业、食品流通和餐饮业相互联结的食品产业链有了较大的变化和较快的发展。进入21世纪以来,农业连续多年丰收,食品制造业和餐饮业以及食品物流和零售业每年平均以两位数增长。中国大陆的食品制造业产值由1980年的500多亿元人民币,上升到2007年的3.2万亿元,增长63倍;餐饮业营业额由1978年的55亿元,上升到2007年的1.25万亿元,增长200多倍。
