《Sister Carrie》,writted by Theodore Dreiser, a famous realistic writer in American literature history, is a representative of realism, which describes a poor countryside girl’s life change after her arrival to Chicago. As a countryside girl, there is nothing wrong with her to pursuit rich and respectable life. She lived with Drouet just because her sister did not show much welcome to her, and also she lost her job, she was alone and helpless. She believed Drouet would marry her, but he did not, then she met Hursthood, the two were attracted by each other ,and they married. Though there were lies in this marriage ,rules of living in that world and cruel reality in life ,carrie realized her dream by herself. Some people thought carrie lived with the two men just with the purpose of better life, peacockish and low self-esteem, but facing with such terrible situation,there was nothing wrong with her making her choices.At the end of this movie, carrie ,among the upper classes, still felt lonely when she was around by luxurious furniture, all of which push us to think about our lifes, our dreams ,things we catched, things we lost and so on .Anyway this movie is inspirational to some extent, it teaches us how to exist when facing cruel reality.
In writing techniques,we know Dreiser was a realistic writer, and 《sister carrie》was born in naturalism mature period.In thiswork ,the naturalism style was obvious among words and scenes.This work reflected thoroughly that different people have different mindsets ,suffer different situations when taken up by desire and profit. It also discussed instinct desire and environment affect
on individual destiny,which was full of amorality and rules of nature survival of the fittest.
