While the gap between rich and poor in some countries is narrowing, there is still a lot of inequality in other places---some people have a lot ofmoney and opportunities and others don't. A recent report by Oxfam and Credit Suisse revealed how divided many of us are when it comes to wealth. A lot of the moneyin the world is in the hands of very few people. In fact, 48% of global wealth isowned by the richest 1% of the population. But some countries are attempting to reduce this inequality and make the poor, less poor.According to David Bryer from Oxfam, Brazil has been taking“ some reallysensible aroundmeasuresinvesting in-measuresa higheraroundminimumhavingwagemore progressive( andinvesting in稳定的 )tax, central publicservices.” Having a higher minimum wage can help people eat better and seek a better education. And more people with more money buy more things---and factories canproduce more. In turn, a factory which produces more will need more workers. So,more jobs are created.Other wealthy individuals are doing their bit to help reduce inequality.Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, earned a lot of money from his company but whenhe retired,he and his wife Melinda, created a foundation to help the poor.He thinks that rich people should all be philanthropic and take out some wealth to help the poorest both at home and abroad.Bill Gates feels that giving money to help poor people is "fulfilling". Butif other super-rich people don't want to experience this fulfillment then, according to Oxfam, very soon the wealthiest 1% will soon own more money than therest of the world's population.8.According to a recent report by Oxford and Credit Suisse, ________.A.the gap between the rich and the poor is widening graduallyB.increased wealth helps people to reduce the inequalityC. people should be happy aboutthe world’ s getting richerD. a small number of people possess the major world wealth9. 阶段综合检测(一)Ⅰ.阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)AEnglish teenagers are to receive compulsory(强制的) cooking lessons in schools. The idea is to encourage healthy eating to fight the country's increasing obesity (肥胖症) rate. It's feared that basic cooking and food preparation skills are being lost as parents turn to prepared convenience food.Cooking was once regarded as an important part of education in England—even if it was mainly aimed at girls. In recent decades, cooking has progressively become a minor activity in schools. In many cases the schools themselves have given up cooking meals in their kitchens. But the rising level of obesity has led to a rethink about the food that children are given and the skills they should be taught.“What I want is to teach young people how to do basic, simple recipes(食谱) like a tomato sauce, a simple curry, a stirfry, which they can use now at home and then in their later life,”said Ed Balls, the minister responsible for schools. The new lessons are due to start in September, but some schools without kitchens will be given longer time to adapt. It is also likely to be a shortage of teachers with the right skills, since the trend has been to teach food technology rather than practical cooking. Also the compulsory lessons for handson cooking will only be one hour a week for one term. But the wellknown cookery writer, Pru Leith, believes it will be worth it.“If we'd done this thirty years ago, we might not have the crisis we've got now about obesity and lack of knowledge about food and so on. Every child should know how to cook, not just so that they'll be healthy, but because it's a life skill which is a real pleasure.”The renewed interest in cooking is primarily a response to the level of obesity in Britain which is among the highest in Europe, and according to government figures, half of all the British will be obese in 25 years if current trends are not stopped.【语篇解读】英国青少年将在学校接受必修的烹饪课的学习。

第1页 阶段性综合评估检测(一) (时间:120分钟 满分:150分) I. 听力(略) Ⅱ. 阅读理解(40分) A The Internet will open up new vistas (前景), create the global village—you can make new friends all around the world. That, at least, is what it promised us. The difficulty is that it did not take the human mind into account. The reality is that we cannot keep relationships with more than a limited number of people. No matter how hard the Internet tries to put you in communication, its best efforts will be defeated by your mind. The problem is twofold (双重的). First, there is a limit on the number of people we can hold in mind and have a meaningful relationship with. That number is about 150 and is set by the size of our brain. Second, the quality of your relationships depends on the amount of time you invest (投入) in them. We invest a lot in a small number of people and then distribute what’s left among as many others as we can. The problem is that if we invest little time in a person, our engagement with that person will decline (减弱) until eventually it dies into "someone I once knew". This is not, of course, to say that the Internet doesn’t serve a socially valuable function. Of course it does. But the question is not that it allows you to increase the size of your social circle to include the rest of the world, but that you can keep your relationships with your existing friends going even though you have to move to the other side of the world. In one sense, that’s a good thing. But it also has a disadvantage. If you continue to invest in your old friends even though you can no longer see them, then certainly you aren’t using your time to make new friends where you now live. And I suspect that probably isn’t the best use of your time. Meaningful relationships are about being able to communicate with each other, face to face. The Internet will slow down the rate with which relationships end, but it won’t stop that happening eventually. 21. What is stressed in the first paragraph? A. The present situation of the Internet. B. The difficulty in communication on the Internet. C. The socially valuable function of the Internet. 第2页
D. The role of the human mind in the Internet communication. 22. The underlined word "engagement" in the second paragraph probably means "_____". A. appointment B. connection C. interview D. agreement 23. According to the passage, the author holds the view that _____. A. the Internet fails to play so valuable a role in communication as it promised B. the Internet determines the quality of social relationships C. the Internet greatly increases the size of social circles D. the Internet communication is no less effective than the face-to-face talk 24. What is the author’s attitude towards the use of the Internet to strengthen relationships? A. He is uncertain about it. B. He is hopeful about it. C. He approves of it. D. He doubts it. B In a world with limited land, water and other natural resources (资源), the harm from the traditional business model is on the rise. Actually, the past decades has seen more and more forests disappearing and the globe becoming increasingly warm. People now realize that this unhealthy situation must be changed, and that we must be able to develop in sustainable (可持续的) ways. That means growth with low carbon or development of sustainable products. In other words, we should keep the earth healthy while using its supply of natural resources. Today, sustainable development is a proper trend in many countries. According to a recent study, the global market for low-carbon energy will become three times bigger over the next decades. China, for example, has set its mind on leading that market, hoping to seize chances in the new round of the global energy revolution. It is now trying hard to make full use of wind and solar energy, and is spending a huge amount of money making electric cars and high-speed trains. In addition, we are also seeing great growth in the global markets for sustainable products such as palm oil (棕榈油), which is produced without cutting down valuable rainforest. In recent years the markets for sustainable products have grown by more than 50%. Governments can fully develop the potential of these new markets. First, they can set high
