Do elderly couples really look alike? You’ve probably seen it before---two elderly people walking hand in hand down the street and looking very much like each other. They look so much alike that they could be brother and sister.Do you believe that people who live together for many years would look alike? It’s strange, but scientists say it’s true. How scientists proved it?In a study, scientists found young couples only showed similarity by chance. However, elder couples were very likely to look like each other. The similarity could be very subtle and could be found in wrinkles, furrows, etc. Besides, some couples look far more alike than other couples. The reason behind itThe scientists thought of several possible reasons:1. Diet.“We are what we eat.”As couples usually share the same diet, will they probably look alike? For example, if both partners eat a high fat diet, their faces will tend to look fat. However, the scientists ruled this out using another small study.2. Environment. Will elderly couples show similarity because they live together in the same area for a long time? The environmental factors such as sunshine and wind affect the skin in similar ways. The scientists ruled this possibility out as well.3. Empathy. This is the theory the scientists believe in. Couples grow to look similar because they are empathizing with each other. They copy each other’s facial expressions. For example, if one partner often smiles in a certain way, the other is likely to copy it. In this way, their faces share similar wrinkles and furrows.A look into the futureSome people still don’t believe in the“empathy”theory. And, some think growing to look more like your partner is a horrific idea. Others, though, think there’s something very sweet and romantic about it.(材料二)请相信,音乐是有魔力的!Magic MusicWhat can music do? As a personal expression? To increase patriotism? Or as a way to pass on traditions?Sweet music for milkingScientists believe farmers could get more milk from their cows by playing classical music in the cowshed. In 2001, a group of UK psychologists played music of different tempos to some cows. Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony* was a big hit in the m ilking shed. But when noisy music was played, there was no increase in milk yield. According to research, calming music can improve milk yield, probably because it reduces stress.Music can help plants grow faster as well. In 2007, South Korean scientists proved that playing music, especially classical pieces, to plants really helps plants grow more quickly.Muzak*, more than musicToday, you hear muzak almost everywhere. Muzak is functional music rather than entertainment; it affects those who hear it.Music is art, but Muzak is science. And when you use the science of Muzak: In an office, workers tend to work more efficiently, and feel happier. In a factory, people feel better and, with less fatigue and tension, their jobs seem less monotonous. In a store, people seem to shop in a more relaxed and leisurely manner. That’s why we say Muzak is much more than music.Music as symbolAt the mention of the 1988 Seoul Olympics (汉城奥运会), what comes into your mind first? The theme song Hand in Hand (汉城奥运会主题曲《手拉手》), of course! It is one of the most favorite songs in Olympichistory. As a successful Olympic song, Hand in Hand is easy but not simple. The song conveys the common dream of people around the world—peace and the spirit of the Olympics. Anyone, who saw the moment when 18,000 spectators sang Hand in Hand together with the singers on the stage, would feel the power of music.(材料三)谁是这几周最火的人物?
COne night I was sitting in my room half-listening as my 15-year-old brother T ommy fought with 12-year-old brother Kevin. I didn’t pay attention when Kevin rushed up the stairs with the hurt on his face.About 20 minutes later, as I walking upstairs I heard Kevin crying inside the bathroom. I knocked on the door and asked, “Hey Kevin, do you want to talk?”No answer.I tried again, “ Way don’t you come out of there?”Again, no answer. So, joking around, I grabbed a stack of (一摞)cards and a pencil and wrote, “If you don’t want to talk, we can write notes to each other.”An hour later I was still sitting on the floor outside the bathroom with two stacks of cards in front of me. One was blank and one was cards from Kevin on which he had translated all his yucky feelings into words for me. As I read one of Kevin notes, tears came to my eyes. It said, “Nobody in this family cares about me. I’m not the youngest, and I’m not the oldest. Tommy thinks I’m silly and Dad wishes he had the other K evin as a kid because he’s better at basketball. And you’re never around to even notice me.”Tears came to my eyes as I wrote back to him. “Y ou know Kevin, I really do love you and I’m sorry I don’t always show it.I am here for you and you are loved in this family.”There was no answer for a while, but then I heard a tearingsound coming from inside the bathroom. Kevin, who had run out of cards wrote on a tor n paper cup, “ Thanks.”I wrote back “ For what?” It returned to me with “Loving me” on it.Since then, I try my best to never only half-notice my family members any more. Kevin and I have a closer relationship now. And sometimes when one of us notices that the other is upset, we’ll smile and say “ Write it on a paper cup.”56. Doodling(乱写乱画)Can Improve Memory(重点精读课文)典型阅读结构破解:提出问题→得出结论→分析原因→给出建议Doodling may look messy, but it can in fact be a sign of an alert mind It may help you remember snippets (小片段) of key information.Researchers carried out memory tests on 40 volunteers, asking them to listen to a telephone message. As they were listening to the message, half of the volunteers were encouraged to doodle on a piece of paper, while the other half didn’t doodle at all. Afterwards, both groups were asked to write down the names and the places mentioned. To everyone’s surprise, doodlers performed much better than non-doodlers.So why? If you are doing a boring task, like listening to a dull meeting or conversation, you may not be engaged in (参与) it all the time. You may start to daydream such as visualizing (显现) your holidays. You may even end up nodding off (打盹). Those things distract you from the task at hand, resulting in (导致) poor performance. A simple thing will be sufficient (足够的) to stop your daydreaming without affecting your performance on the main task. Doodling is such a simple thing, and so this makes sense. It can keep you more alert so that you are more likely to absorb what is being said.Well, next time you’re zoning out during a dull meeting, you’d better reach for a pen and doodle — and not just to ease your boredom.(材料二)关于2010年上海世博会,你知道多少?A brief Introduction to World Expo 2010 Shanghai(应用文典型文章)应用文阅读:找出文中关键词,熟悉相关词汇>> Duration (持续时间):May 1, 2010 — October 31, 2010Expected Visitors: 70 millionExpected Participants (参展国) : 200>>Emblem (会徽)The emblem, showing the image of three people — you, me, him/her holding hands together, symbolizes(象征) the big family of mankind. Inspired(启发) by the shape of the Chinese character “世” (meaning the world), the design conveys(传递) the organizer’s wish to host an Expo which is of global scale(规模) and shows the diversified(多种多样的) cultures of the world.>>Mascot (吉祥物)The name of the mascot of World Expo 2010, Haiba o, means “the treasure of the sea.” It is a lucky name in Chinese tradition. He is welcoming friends from all over the world with his open arms and confident smile.>>ThemeThe theme of Expo 2010 is “Better City, Better Life.” It represents the common wish of mankind for better living in future urban (城市的) environments. In 1800, 2% of the global population lived in cities. In 1950, the figure rose to 29%. In 2000, almost half of the world’s population lived in cities, and by 2010, as estimated(估计) by the United Nations, the figure will reach 55%. Expo 2010 will work out blueprints (蓝图) for future cities and harmonious (和谐的) urban lifestyles, which will promote (促进) a better city life in thefuture.>>Master plan (总体规划)The Expo Site covers a total area of 5.28 km2. It spans (横跨) both sides of the Huangpu River, with 3.93 km2 in Pudong and 1.35 km2 in Puxi. There are five functional zones (功能区) marked A, B, C, D, and E, each of which has different functions:Zone A will host the national pavilions (国家馆) of Asian countries except the Southeast Asian ones.Zone B will be home to the China Pavilion (中国馆), the national pavilions of Southeast Asian and Oceanian(大洋洲的) countries, Pavilions for International Organizations, Theme Pavilions (主题馆), Expo Centre, and Performance Centre etc.Zone C will host the national pavilions of European, American, and African countries. A large public amusement park will be built at the entrance of this zone.Zone D is home to Corporate Pavilions(企业馆). The land is one of the original places of modern Chinese national industry. So some of the old industrial buildings will be kept and renovated (修复) into Expo pavilions.

King Midas and his Golden TouchLong long ago, there lived in Greece a king whose name was Midas. He was a greedy man and loved gold better than anything else in the world. One day, he asked a god to give him more gold. The god decided to punish him and said, “Your wish is granted already. Everything you touch will turn to gold.”Midas was overjoyed when he heard this. The next morning, he got up early to test his skill. When he touched his bed, it turned to gold. “Gold!” cried Midas, laughing like a naughty little boy. “It works!”Not only stones, flowers, and the furnishings of his house turned to gold, but, when he sat down to table, so did the food he ate and the water he drank. He was unhappy now. Just then his daughter ran up to him, Midas touched her hand. At once her body became cold and stiff. Midas was holding a gold statue! At last, he begged the god to free him from his wish. “Go to the river and bathe in it,” the god said. So Midas did, and the water took away his golden touch. He would never forget this lesson: gold did not bring happiness. This is a Greek myth. Nowadays, the idiom “have the Midas touch” means to have the ability to be successful, especially the ability to make money easily. Well, do you want to have the Midas touch and become a millionaire?(材料二)交换了衣服,是否也就交换了命运?The Prince and the PauperThe Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain tells the story of Tom Canty, the son of a beggar and thief, and young Edward Tudor, the only son ofKing Henry VIII (亨利八世) of England.Tom’s life in the back streets of London is hard. He is forced by his father, John Canty, to go out begging every day, and if he returnsempty-handed, he will be beaten. Tom loves stories about nobility (贵族),and he always dreams of living such a life. One day, Tom’s daydr eaming leads him out of the city of London, past the palaces of the rich, and finally to Westminster Palace (威斯敏斯特宫),where he actually sees Edward, the prince, on the other side of a fence. At the same time, the prince notices Tom and invites him into the palace. Each of the boys is fascinated (使……着迷) by the other’s life. Theyexchange clothing and discover that they look very much alike. The guard, believing that the prince is the pauper, pushes Edward out of the palace. SoTom begins to play (装成) the prince at Westminster Palace, while Edward, the prince, has to learn to survive (存活) in the harsh and violent worldoutside his palace. At first, Tom enjoys his new life very much, but soon he’s in trouble. People in the court (宫廷) become very confu sed about the “prince’s” rude behavior, saying that the prince is mad. Then Henry VIII sends two people to watch over (监督) the “prince” and to remind him of what he should do.With some guidance, Tom learns quickly and gradually gets used to his court life.In the meantime, Edward is living with John Canty and is forced to beg and steal. One night, he manages to slip away (逃走) from the family. The scene then moves to a royal dinner, where Tom is told that Henry VIII is dead. Tom thus suddenly becomes the king. He uses every opportunity to learn, and to remember, important royal matters. While Tom is becoming more like an heir (继承人) to the throne of England (英国王位), the real prince is trying his best to deal with a lot of trouble. John Canty, still believing Edward is his son, keeps tracing (追踪) him and wants to catch him. Edward then wanders alone across the countryside, driven away (赶走) whenever he begs for food or rest. Alonghis journey, he hears many stories about the injustices (不公平、非正义的行为) o f English laws and gets a close look at the common people’s life.As Edward is returning to London, Tom is rapidly learning to be a king and is preparing for his coronation (加冕). On Coronation Day, just as the crown is about to be put on Tom’s head, E dward stops it. The real prince finally becomes the king, and Tom is made the “King’s Ward (国王护卫).” Throughout his reign (统治), Edward always remembers his adventures and reigns more mercifully (仁慈地) because of them.(材料三)当甲型H1N1流感全球蔓延,世界卫生组织表示:不排除把流感大流行警告级别提升至6级的可能性。
World Tackles A-H1N1 FluThe World Health Organization (WHO 世界卫生组织) said recently that the risk of a pandemic caused by the A-H1N1 virus (甲型H1N1流感病毒) is still very high and there is still the possibility to raise the alert level toPhase 6 from the current Phase 5. Phase 6 means outbreaks have been found in two or more regions in the world and a pandemic is under way.So far, a total of 985 A-H1N1 flu infections, including one case in China’s Hong Kong, have been confirmed in 20 count ries. In Mexico City (墨西哥城), the government has ordered a five-day holiday to stem new infections. In the USA, more than 430 schools with confirmed cases had closed for at least 14 days. In China, the government has started a daily report on influenza A-H1N1, and is making stringent checks on people entering the country by air, land, and sea in an attempt to prevent the new flu from spreading to the country. Some scientists said that they had found the first human to come down with the flu: a four-year-old Mexican boy. To e veryone’s surprise, he isrecovering! Some believed that he could hold the key to the source of the virus.(材料四)5·12汶川大地震一周年祭即将到来,社会各界人士纷纷以各种形式祭奠在地震中不幸逝去的同胞。
