新概念97课课文原文Lesson 97: A man-made diseaseThere is no doubt that the increase in the number of diseases in the world today is largely due to man's destruction of the environment. Man has cut down forests, killed birds, and driven some species of animals to the point of extinction. As a result, many ancient diseases, like the plague, which have lain dormant for centuries, are now reappearing.Scientists discovered the connection between man's destruction of the environment and disease quite by accident. Some years ago, a new disease appeared in Panama. Since the doctors were unable to explain the symptoms of the disease, the patients were sent to Harvard University in the United States for examination. The doctors at Harvard thought that the disease might have been caused by an unknown virus. They therefore examined samples of soil and water taken from the victims' homes in Panama. To their surprise, they discovered not one virus, but hundreds. Tests revealed that many of the viruses were harmful to man.The doctors were familiar with the fact that insects can transmit diseases, so they decided to examine insects in the area to see whether they were carriers of the disease. They caught a large number of insects and found that over 50% of them were carrying harmful viruses. The insects, they discovered, had been forced to leave the rainforest because large areas of it had been destroyed. The destruction of the rainforest in this way not only forces insects to move into cultivated fields, but also destroys the balance of nature. As a result, insects that are harmful to man increase, whilethose that are harmful to insects decrease. This in turn leads to an increase in the number of insects which transmit disease. The problem does not only occur in Panama. The destruction of forests in other parts of the world is having a similar effect. In Brazil, for instance, the increasing destruction of the forests has led to an increase in the number of insects carrying diseases such as malaria and yellow fever. While it may be true that new drugs can control these diseases, it is only a matter of time before new strains of them appear which are more difficult to control. The destruction of the environment is the price we have to pay for progress. Nevertheless, it is rather frightening to learn that the destruction of the environment may result in the destruction of man himself. However, it must be pointed out that it is not too late for man to prevent this from happening. Governments must now take action to preserve the world's forests. If they do not, it will soon be too late to do anything about it.Man's destruction of the environment has resulted in the reemergence of ancient diseases and the increase in the number of insects that transmit disease. The destruction of forests in Panama has forced insects to leave the rainforest and move into cultivated fields, where they transmit harmful viruses to humans. This problem is not limited to Panama, as other parts of the world, like Brazil, are also experiencing an increase in insects carrying diseases due to the destruction of forests. While new drugs may temporarily control these diseases, new strains will eventually emerge that are more difficult to control. It is now crucial for governments to take action and preserve the world's forests toprevent further destruction and protect man from the consequences of his own actions.。
