I've been lucky to travel around with my parents and want to tell you about some of my favorite cities and yummy Chinese dishes.First, let's talk about Beijing! The capital city is home to the incredible Forbidden City, which was the palace for emperors long ago. With over 9,000 rooms, I felt like I was exploring a maze! The red walls and golden roofs are so beautiful. I also loved seeing the giant pandas at the Beijing Zoo. They are so cute and cuddly looking, though I wouldn't want to actually hug one since they could smash me! Yikes!For a really fun day in Beijing, we went to the Longqing Gorge where you can go boating and hiking. I paddled a little boat through the river canyon and saw soaring cliffs and waterfalls all around. So cool! When I got hungry, I feasted on crispy Peking duck. The chef carved the juicy slices of duck right in front of me. I wrapped the duck in pancakes with plum sauce, cucumbers and scallions. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!Another city I really enjoyed was Xi'an. It's kind of like stepping back in time! We walked along the massive ancient City Wall that goes around downtown. At night, the Wall is all lit up which makes it look magical. The best part was exploring the Muslim Quarter with narrow streets packed with food stalls. I sampled fresh roujiamo (sort of like a burrito with stewed pork) and got a cone of crispy, syrupy jilinnai for dessert. So sticky and sweet!Of course, no visit to Xi'an is complete without seeing the Terracotta Warriors. These life-size clay soldier statues were buried underground for over 2,000 years to guard an emperor's tomb! Each one has a different face and expression. Our guide said they were all modeled after real soldiers from back then. Mind-blowing!My absolute favorite city is probably Chengdu. Why? Two words - baby pandas! We went to the Chengdu Research Base and I squealed watching the panda cubs tumble and play. Those fluffy teddy bear faces just slay me! Chengdu is also famous for its spicy Sichuan cuisine like mapo tofu and kung pao chicken. My mouth was on fire but I still couldn't stop eating!We took a day trip to see the incredible stone Buddha carved into the side of a mountain at Leshan. The statue is the size of askyscraper! I've never seen anything so big in my life. To get there, we had to climb what felt like a million steps. My legs were shaking by the time we made it to the top but it was so worth the view.My other favorite place in Chengdu was Jinli Street, which looked like it came straight out of an ancient Chinese painting. Stores and restaurants line the pedestrian alleys selling all kinds of traditional snacks and crafts. I loved the freshly made buckwheat noodles and barbecue meat skewers sold by friendly ladies from the countryside.I'm getting hungry just reminiscing about all the delicious foods! Let me tell you about some other yummy Chinese dishes I discovered on my travels. In Guangzhou, we had dim sum for breakfast with steamed shrimp dumplings, barbecue pork buns, and egg tarts. So many little plates of different foods to sample - it's like a never-ending buffet!Up north in Shandong, I became completely obsessed with their famous soup dumplings called gūolǜ. The dumplings are filled with hot soup on the inside along with pork and crab. You have to carefully nibble a hole in the side to slurp out the savory broth before dipping the dumpling in vinegar and gulping it down. Messy but oh so worth it!Speaking of dumplings, some of the best jiaozi I've ever eaten came from a tiny hole-in-the-wall in Shanghai. The dumplings were packed with flavorful fillings like pork and cabbage, or eggs and chives. We stood outside at the food stall counter and watched as the ladies pinched and pleated the dumplings by hand right in front of us. Fresh, hot, and absolutely perfect!No trip to China is complete without sampling diverse regional noodle dishes. In Lanzhou, we slurped downhand-pulled beef noodles in a rich, hearty broth. The chef stretched and twirled the noodle dough in the air like a jump roper before dropping them into the boiling soup.Down south in Guilin, we tried crispy fried noodles called luosifen that were bathed in a mouth-numbing sauce made with special river snails. It sounds a little weird, but it ended up being surprisingly delicious! The river town is surrounded by otherworldly karst mountains that make you feel like you're wandering through a fairytale land.I could keep going and going about all the amazing sights and foods I experienced in China. From scorpion skewers in Beijing to candied fruit and rainbow-colored drinks along the Bund in Shanghai, my travels opened my eyes to China'swonderfully diverse cuisine and sights. My mouth burns but I can't get enough of dishes like mapo tofu, dandan noodles, and Kung Pao chicken.But my absolute favorite city is probably Guilin. It has the most breathtaking natural scenery I've ever seen! Guilin issurrounded by bright green karst hills and rivers with water so clear you can see right through it. Taking a boat cruise down the Li River and floating under the huge limestone peaks is like something out of a fairy tale. The scenery seriously looks too beautiful to be real!OK, now let me tell you about some of the best foods in China. I'm sure you've had Chinese food like fried rice, dumplings, and noodles before. But the food here is so much better and there are tons of dishes you can't get overseas.First up is Peking duck from Beijing. The duck is fried until the skin is really crispy and then you wrap it in a thin pancake with cucumbers, scallions, and sweet bean sauce. It's my dad's favorite and smells amazing! And you can't leave Beijing without trying a jianbing, which is kind of like a crepe with an egg cooked right into it along with crispy wontons and lots of savory sauces.In the south they eat a lot of dim sum, which are small plates of dumplings, buns, and other bite-sized dishes. My favorite is char siu bao, which are soft steamed buns filled with barbecued pork. So delicious! Guangzhou is one of the best places for authentic dim sum. And you have to try chicken feet if you're feeling adventurous!Up in Sichuan, the food is incredibly spicy but so flavorful. I told you about their famous dishes like mapo tofu already. But they also have an amazing hot pot where you cook your own meats and veggies in a huge pot of boiling chili oil broth right at your table. Just typing about it is making my mouth water!Another one of my favorite dishes is xiaolongbao from Shanghai. These are soup dumplings with a hot broth inside. You have to carefully pick them up with your chopsticks, make a tiny hole, slurp out the broth, then eat the dumpling. It's an art to eat them without making a mess! The broth is so rich and savory.And lastly, I have to mention the mouth-watering street foods you can find all over China. My favorites are jianbing (like I mentioned, a type of crepe), sugar candies shaped like little animals or toys, stinky but crazy addictive tofu, skewers of candied strawberries, and eggs cooked into a thin omelet with lots of yummy fillings and sauces.Whew, I could talk about Chinese food forever! From the spicy Sichuan dishes to the flaky pastries up north to the tropical flavors down in the south, the variety is just endless.
