2013高考英语二轮阅读理解精选(05)及答案A(·浙江卷,A) One evening in February 2007, a student named Paula Ceely brought her car to a stop on a remote road in Wales. She got out to open a metal gate that blocked her path. That's when she heard the whistle sounded by the driver of a train. Her Rensult Clio was parked across a railway line. Seconds later, she watched the train drag her car almost a kilometre down the railway tracks.Ceely's near_miss made the news because she blamed it on her GPS device (导航仪). She had never driven the route before. It was dark and raining heavily. Ceely was relying on her GPS, but it made no mention of the crossing. “I put my complete trust in the device and it led me right into the path of a speeding train,” she told the BBC.Who is to blame here? Rick Stevenson, who tells Ceely's story in his book When Machines Fail Us, points the finger at the limitations of technology. We put our faith in digital devices, he says, but our digital helpers are too often not up to the job. They are filled with small problems. And it's not just GPS devices: Stevenson takes us on a tour of digital disasters involving everything from mobile phones to wireless keyboards. The problem with his argument in the book is that it's not clear why he only focuses on digital technology, while there may be a number of other possible causes. A mapmaker might have left the crossing off a paper map. Maybe we should blame Ceely for not paying attention. Perhaps the railway authorities are at fault for poor signalling system. Or maybe someone has studied the relative dangers and worked out that there really is something specific wrong with the GPS equipment. But Stevenson doesn't say. It's a problem that runs through the book. In a section on cars, Stevenson gives an account of the advanced techniques that criminals use to defeat computerbased locking systems for cars. He offers two independent sets of figures on car theft; both show a small rise in some parts of the country. He says that once again not all new locks have proved reliable. Perhaps, but maybe it's also due to the shortage of policemen on the streets. Or changing social circumstances. Or some combination of these factors. The game between humans and their smart devices is amusing and complex. It is shaped by economics and psychology and the cultures we live in. Somewhere in the mix of those forces there may be a way for a wiser use of technology. If there is such a way, it should involve more than just an awareness of the shortcomings of our machines. After all, we have lived with them for thousands of years. They have probably been fooling us for just as long.本文是议论文。
(英语)高考英语阅读理解抓分精品训练及解析一、高中英语阅读理解1.阅读理解There might be as many as 10 million species of complex life on this planet today —— a huge number. But add up all of the complex species that ever lived and some biologists think the grand total would be about five billion. The estimate leads to an astonishing conclusion: a staggering 99% of species are not around any more. They have been driven to extinction.More species are joining the ranks of the extinct every year. Many scientists believe we are living through an episode of remarkably rapid extinction, on a scale that has been seen only five times in the last half a billion years. They call this current episode the sixth mass extinction —— a large, global decline in a wide variety of species over a relatively short period of time. And they tend to agree that humans arethe main cause.Over-hunting, overfishing, and human-driven habitat loss are pushing many species to the brink. In fact, we have changed the planet so much that some geologists are now suggesting thatwe have entered a new phase in Earth's history; an epoch they call the "Anthropocene". By 2100, it is expected that humans will have caused the extinction of up to half of the world's current species.Because we are living through this extinction, it is relatively easy for us to study the driving forces behind it. But how do we determine what caused other mass die-offs that happened long ago? To do so we have to look at what archaeologists, palaeontologists, geologists and other scientists have concluded from the evidence they have gathered. The trouble is, those scientists do not always agree with one another —— even about the most recent extinction event. As well as the five-or six- mass extinctions, there have also been many smaller extinctions. One of these mini extinction events happened towards the end of the Pleistocene, a few tensof thousands of years ago. It is sometimes called the "megafaunal" extinction because many ofthe species it claimed were particularly large animals, weighing more than 97lb (44kg). However, its cause remains a debate amongst scientists.(1)What can we learn about the sixth mass extinction?A. Humans are the main cause of it.B. It means a global decline over a long time.C. It occurred towards the end of the Pleistocene.D. Scientists still disagree about the causeof it.(2)What can be inferred from the text about species?A. 99% of species will not be around any more by 2100.B. By the 22nd century, there will probably be about five million on this planet.C. About eight years later we will enter what is called the "Anthropocene".D. It is not easy for us to figure out causes behind the"Anthropocene".(3)Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word in the last paragraph ?A. Land animals.B. Marine life.C. 高考英语阅读理解抓分精选练习(1)【阅读理解猜想词义】Passage ****************A few years ago it was popular to speak of a penetration gap, a disagreementbetween young people and their elders. Parents said that children did not show themproper respect and obedience, while children complained ( 诉苦 ) that their parentsdid not understand them at all What had gone wrong? Why had the generation gap suddenly appeared? Actually the generation gap has been around for a long time. Many peopleargue that a gap is built into the fabric ( 构造 ) of our society. One important cause of the generation gap is the chance that young people haveto choose their own ways of life. In more traditional societies, when children growup, they are expected to live in the same area as their parents, to marry people thattheir parents know and agree to, and to continue the family occupation ( 职业 ). Inour society, young people often travel great distances for their education, move outof the family home at an early age, marry or live with people whomtheir parents have never met, and choose occupations different from those of their parents. In our easily changing society, parents often expect their children to do betterthan they did; to find better jobs, to make more money; and to do all the things thatthey were unable to do. Often, however, the strong desire that parents have for their children are another cause of the disagreement between them. Often, they discoverthat they have very little in common with each other. Finally, the speed at which changes take place in our society is another causeof the gap between the generations. In a traditional culture, elderly people are valuedfor their wisdom, but in our society the knowledge of a lifetime may become out ofdate overnight. The young and the old seem to live in two very different worlds, separated by different skills and abilities. No doubt, the generation gap will continue to be a feature ( 特色 ) of Americanlife for some time to come It ’s causes are rooted in the freedom and changes ofour society, and in the rapid speed at which society changes.1. The main idea of the first paragraph is that________.A. the generation gap suddenly appearedB. the generation gap is a feature of modern social lifeC. people can reduce the generation gapD. many critics argue over the nature of the generation gap答案: B 指导:本段最后一句。

ADear Rudyard Kipling,Father has consistently tried to instill(灌输) a sense of being a man in me ever since I was very young. When I reachedthe age of twelve he began taking me to his auto body shop. He told me this tough job would build me into a man of character. But this all changed a year ago when my mother passed away and stumbled upon your poem, If.My mother was the person who could understand me. If I ever got tired during my work hours at the shop I could call her to come and pick me up. It was my mother who instilled the love of literature and languages in me. My mother spoke six languages fluently and had thousands of books, which still sit in the attic of our house. It was in this “library” of hers that I picked up a book of poetry from a cold metal shelf and found your poem, If.Because of the death of my mother I felt alone, as if I belonged to no family. The image of a man was completely shattered when I saw him break down and cry, which looked so pathetic(凄惨的)and “unmanly” compared to his usual stoic(禁欲主义者)and emotionless countenance. Yet I remained silent remembering the golden words: “If you can keep your head when all about you/ Are losing theirs and blaming it on you… you’ll be a Man, my son!”If reminded me to remain calm and “keep my head” because I wanted to be a man and wanted to be the one supporting my family. I sacrificed my ability to compete in a winter sport so that I could stay home and cook for my family and clean the house. My father saw this and our relationship has grown much stronger. He finally respected me for who I was and told me he was proud to have a man for his son. Through this poem, I realize that to be a man is not about putting weights on a barbell(杠铃)but rather putting the weight of others on your back.Your poem was so much more than just a simple list of guidelines or morals that some see it as; it really changed my life and my relationship with my dad.41. This is an old tale. It’s the story of the three little pigs and the big bad wolf that blew down a house made of straw and one made of sticks. The only house left standing was the one made of bricks. Now there is new evidence to suggest that houses built with bales of straw can be very strong. They are also environmental.Pete Walker is a professor at the University of Bath in Britain. He and a team of researchers there have built a house made out of straw bales and hemp material.During the next twelve months the team will study the effectiveness of these materials in home building. Professor Walker says there are many good reasons for using straw.Pro fessor Walker says that one of the benefits is that it’s a relatively inexpensively renewable material that’s readily available.According to Professor Walker, straw takes in carbon dioxide as it grows. So it can be seen as having no harmful effects on the environment. He says straw helps the environment in other ways.Professor Walker: “The straw bale walls are relatively thick and so all thatstraw provides very good thermal(of heat) insulation. So we make buildings that require very little heating in the winter or indeed very little cooling in the summer. So they require very little additional energy.”Professor Walker says this reduces home operating expenses. It also reduces the effect on the environment. He says the current interest in straw bale houses is a direct response to the problem of climate change.David Lanfear owns an eco-friendly home building service in the United States called Bale on Bale Construction. He says he laughed when some friends first told him about houses built of straw. But after doing his own research, he learned that building with straw bales made a lot of sense. He has now helped to build more than ten straw bale houses and says the building material is becoming more widely accepted. To build the houses, he fills a wood frame with tightly packed bales of straw. Next he coats the walls inside and out with layers of clay plaster. He says the common ideas about straw houses continue, including stories about the threat of fire. Mr. Lanfear says straw bale houses have done well when tested for fire resistance. And he says his builders use the same building methods as traditional builders to keep out rain.David Lanfear: “We use what we call good shoes and a good hat, and that would be a solid foundation and a really go od roof.”46. The function of the story in the first paragraph is to _____________.A. amuse the readersB. introduce the topic of this passageC. help the readers to recall their childhood memoryD. remind the readers that bricks are no longer the best choice for building 【答案】B【解析】推理判断题。
