Merchants from far-away landswould pass through our city, bringing exotic goods and fascinating stories. Even today, you can still see some of the old buildings and city gates that were built during that era.Another thing that makes Nanyang special is its beautiful natural scenery. We have these amazing mountains called the Xionger Mountains, which are covered in lush green forests and have lots of hiking trails. Sometimes, my family and I go on picnics there, and we can see all sorts of cool plants and animals. My favorite is the Nanyao Temple which has these massive stone elephant sculptures guarding the entrance. They look so epic!But Nanyang isn't just about old stuff from the past. We have loads of fun modern things too. Like Nanyang has the biggest mall in the whole province - the Nanyang Mall. It's absolutely humongous with seven floors and every store you can imagine. My friends and I love going there to play in the huge indoor playground and arcade. We always beg our parents to take us there on weekends.Another awesome place in Nanyang is the Nanhu Park. It's this beautiful big park surrounding a massive lake called Nanhu or South Lake. You can rent boats or just walk along the shores. It's like a real life museum!But Nanyang isn't just about old stuff from the past. It's a modern, growing city too with over 10 million people living there now. The downtown area has all these huge skyscrapers and shopping malls. There are parks and plazas all over too with cool fountains and sculptures. My favorite is Mingxing Park which has a massive musical fountain that dances to lights and music at night. It's magical!What else is great about Nanyang? Well, we have fantastic food of course! You have to try junjuan if you ever visit Nanyang.Another cool thing about my hometown is that we have our very own type of colored glaze pottery called Nanyang Yao. It's really beautiful with these dazzling colors and patterns. There are special towns in the countryside that are known just for making Nanyang Yao pottery. I've gone to visit the artisans and watched them craft the pottery by hand. It's amazing!Speaking of the countryside, Nanyang has some awesome scenic spots out in the rural areas too. My favorite is the Red Stone Valley which has these crazy giant red rock formations jutting out of the ground. It almost looks like they come from Mars or something! You can go hiking and climb up through the cool twisting pathways in the rocks. So fun!Then there are the natural wonders like Baihe Waterfall which is the biggest waterfall in Henan Province. The water comes crashing down off a huge 92 meter cliff into pools down below. Sometimes you can even spot monkeys and rare birdshanging around the falls if you're lucky. It's a magical place for sure.But you know what the coolest natural wonder in Nanyang is? It's called the Dandelion Tourist Drift! Okay, I know that might not sound amazing from the name. But just wait until you hear what it is! Basically, every summer, the entire Nanyang Basin area gets covered in dandelions as far as the eye can see. Like millions and millions of them blooming everywhere. People come from all over just to drift down the river and see this breathtaking dandelion sea all around them. It used to be the capital of a kingdom called Zhongzhou during the Han Dynasty. That was way back in 200 BC! Can you believe people have been living there for so incredibly long? There are still some really old ruins and buildings from ancient times that we can see. My favorite is the Nanyao Tower which was built almost 1,500 years ago during the Northern Qi Dynasty. It's a huge stone tower that's 18 meters tall! I went there on a field trip with my class and we got to climb up to the top. The view was amazing!Our city is famous for having lots and lots of peony flowers. The peony is a big, colorful flower that blooms in the springtime. Everywhere you look in Nanyang during spring, you'll see peonies! They have red ones, white ones, pink ones, and all different colors. The peony is actually the city flower of Nanyang. Every April there is a huge Peony Festival where people come from all over to see the beautiful peony flowers. I always go with my parents and we have a picnic in one of the many peony gardens. I love the way the flowers smell!Nanyang is located right along the Yellow River, which is one of the biggest and most important rivers in China. The Yellow River flows for over 5,000 kilometers all the way from the mountains in western China to the Yellow Sea. Because of the Yellow River, the soil around Nanyang is extremely fertile. This means lots of crops and plants can grow really well there. My grandparents actually have a farm just outside the city where they grow all kinds of fruits and vegetables to sell at the market. I love going to visit them on their farm and picking fresh strawberries and grapes right off the vines!Our city has some very yummy local foods that I really love. The most famous is called nang which are thick noodles made from wheat flour and eggs. The noodles are stretched and pulledby hand into these really long, chewy strands. You can get nang in lots of different broths with vegetables, meat, and eggs on top. My absolute favorite is beef nang - the beef is so tender and the broth is full of rich flavors. Nanyang is also known for our crispy fried dough twists called youzagao. The dough gets fried until it puffs up and becomes light and crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. We eat youzagao for breakfast or as a snack, sometimes dipped in sugar or stuffed with sweet or savory fillings.Something else really cool about my hometown are the Shaolin Temples. Shaolin kung fu was invented over 1,500 years ago by the Buddhist monks living at the Shaolin Monasteries in Nanyang. The monks practiced special kinds of martial arts and meditation to train their minds and bodies. Nowadays, the Shaolin Temples have become famous tourist spots where people can watch incredible kung fu shows with monks performing all sorts of incredible stunts like breaking bricks with their heads or doing flips while juggling swords! I was able to go see one of the kung fu shows and it was honestly one of the most amazing things I've ever witnessed.In Nanyang, we have cold, dry winters but hot, humid summers. I really look forward to summer vacation when I can goplay outside with my friends and run through the sprinklers to stay cool. A lot of people also like to go swimming in the Yellow River on super hot days. One of my favorite summer traditions is going to watch the dragon boat races for the Duan Wu Festival. These are huge boat races with teams rowing these sleek dragon-shaped boats across the river as everyone cheers them on from the banks.
