一、Reading

1. run into sth: 偶然遇见；撞到；遭遇

① The car ran into a tree all of a sudden.

② I have run into debt for a long time.

2. step up sth: 增加；加快；加强

3. go missing: 失踪

When loved ones go missing, hope is "the only thing you

have left".

4. due: adj. 因为；预期的；到期的；适当的

9. occur：(occurred; occurring) vi. (1) 发生，存在(2) 想到，想起

① The accident occurred at midnight.

② The disease occurs most frequently in the rural areas.

③ It suddenly occurred to me that I might apply for the job

interview.

10. research sth

研究…….

do research on / into sth:

They are doing research on the cause of the disease.

11. there is a possibility that: 可能……

the possibility of sth: ……的可能性

① Is there any possibility that we will see you this weekend?

② The possibility of breaking the world record never

occurred to him. 12. make up:

(1) 编造：make up an excuse

(2) 构成，组成：52 students make up our class.

3. length: n.长度

lengthen: [?le?θ?n] vt. & vi. (使……) 变长 in length: 在长度方面

4. dozen: n.一打，十二个

(1) dozens of: 许多的，大量的dozens of books

(2) dozen与数词或several，many等词连用时，所修饰的名词前常省略of，dozen也不加s.

(3) dozen后面的名词受the，these，those等限定词修饰；或者其后接us，them等人称代词时，of不可
