Or is it the look on the recipient's face when they receive it that determines the true value? What gift is worth the most? This Christmas I was debating what to give my father. My dad is a hard person to buy for because he never wants anything. I pulled out my phone to read a text message from my mom saying that we were leaving for Christmas shopping for him when I came across a message on my phone that I had locked. The message was from my father. My eyes fell on a photo of a flower taken in Wyoming, and underneath a poem by William Blake. The flower, a lone dandelion standing against the bright blue sky, inspired me. My dad had been reciting those words to me since I was a kid. That may even be the reason why I love writing. I decided that those words would be my gift to my father.I called back. I told my mom to go without me and that I already created my gift. I sent thephoto of the cream-colored flower to my computer and typed the poem on top of it. As I was arranging the details another poem came to mind. The poem was written by Edgar Allan Poe; my dad recited it as much as he did the other. I typed that out as well and searched online for a background to the words of it. The poem was focused around dreaming, and after searching I found the perfect picture. The image was painted with blues and greens and purples, twisting together to create the theme and wonder of a dream. As I watched both poems passing through the printer, the white paper coloring with words that shaped my childhood. I felt that this was a gift that my father would truly appreciate.Christmas soon arrived. The minute I saw the look on my dad's face as he unwrapped those swirling black letters carefully placed in a cheap frame, I knew I had given the perfect gift.56. The African plant produces red flowers above blue-green leaves, and is not one to miss.Get to the display house to see Dionaea muscipula, a plant more commonly known as the Venus Flytrap that feeds on insects and other small animals. The Garden is also a place for wildlife-enthusiasts. Look for grass snakes in the lake. A snake called 'Hissing Sid' is regularly seen lying in the heat of the warm sun.Byron's PoolMany stories surround Lord Byron's time as a student of Cambridge University.Arriving in 1805, he wrote a letter complaining that it was a place of "mess and drunkenness". However, it seems as though Byron did manage to pass the time pleasantly enough. I'm not just talking about the pet bear he kept in his rooms. He spent a great deal of time walking in the village. It is also said that on occasion Byron swam naked by moonlight in the lake, which is now known as Byron's Pool. A couple of miles past Grantchester in the south Cambridgeshire countryside, the pool is surrounded by beautiful circular paths around the fields. The cries of invisible birds make the trip a lovely experience and on the way home you can drop into the village for afternoon tea. The material's inventors say it has a number of possible uses and someday could provide a more environmentally friendly alternative to plastic. The material, made from shrimp ('虾) shells and proteins produced from silk, is called "shrilk." It is thin, clear, flexible and strong.A major benefit of the material is its biodegradability. Plastic's toughness and flexibility represented a revolution in materials science during the 1950s and 1960s. Decades later, however, plastic's very durability (耐用性) is raising questions about how appropriate it is for one-time products such as plastic bags, or short-lived consumer goods, used in the home for a few years and then cast into a landfill where they will degrade for centuries. What is the point of making something that lasts 1,000 years?Shrilk not only will degrade in a landfill, but its basic components are used as fertilizer(肥料), and so will enrich the soil.Shrilk has great potential, the inventors said. Materials from which it is made are plentiful in nature, found in everything ranging from shrimp shells, insect bodies to living plants. That makesshrilk low cost, and its mass production possible should it be used for products demanding a lot of material.Work on shrilk is continuing in the lab. The inventors said the material becomes flexible when wet, so they're exploring ways to use it in wet environments. They're also developing simpler production processes, which could be used for non-medical products, like for computer cases and other products inside the home. They're even exploring combining it with other materials, like carbon fibers, to give it new properties.66. Paragraph I of the passage is mainly about shritk's_____.A. remarkable designB. interesting nameC. major featuresD. basic elements67. What has become a concern about plastic?A. Using it properly.B. Producing it cheaply.C. Developing its properties quickly. ,D. Evaluating its contributions fairly.68. According to the inventors, shrilk has great potential partly because_____.A. it can help plastic degradeB. it can be found in living thingsC. its mass production has been realizedD. its raw materials are abundant in nature69. What are the inventors doing in the lab?A. Replacing carbon fibers with shrilk.B. Testing shrilk's use in wet conditions.C. Making shrilk out of used household goods.D. Improving shrilk's flexibility for medical purposes.70. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?A. Recent Progress in Environmental ProtectionB. Benefits of Insects in Scientific ResearchC. The Harm of One-time ProductsD. A Possible Alternative to PlasticPart IV Writing (45 marks)Section A (10 marks)Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passageWrite NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.Since the earliest civilizations, people have controlled rivers to meet society's demands. Today, rivers are controlled for many reasons, primarily to maintain reliable water supplies for daily, agricultural and industrial needs, for power generation, for navigation (航行), and to prevent flooding.River control is achieved by channelization, a term that covers a range of river engineering works, including widening, deepening, straightening and stabilization of banks, and by the construction of dams.An important period of channelization took place in Europe during the l9'th century, when many large rivers were straightened and their beds deepened. One of the most dramatically changed was the Tisza River, a branch of the Danube that flows through Hungary. The controlling of the Tisza, designed to reduce flooding and make land for agriculture, included cutting off more than 100 meanders (河曲), shortening the river's length by nearly 400 kilometers. One of the most common ways in which people control rivers is by damming them. The past50 years or so has seen an increase in dam construction worldwide, and at the beginning of the 21st century, there were about 800,000 dams globally, some towering more than 200 meters in height.Despite their successes, many dams also cause significant environmental changes that prove harmful. Some particularly deep reservoirs (水库) can bring about earthquakes due to the stress on their bottom rocks caused by huge volumes of water. Downstream of a reservoir, the river is certainly influenced in many ways: water volume, speed and quality are all affected, leading to changes in the landscape and among plants and animals.Section B (10 mark.)Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage.A wise teacher once told me that every teenager needs to experience a not-so-fun first job from working at a grocery store to the fast food industry. Now I still remember my first day at a fast food restaurant three years ago. I wanted to save up money and buy my own car, so I applied everywhere I could that summer. The restaurant called me right away and I thought to myself, this is going to be easy. Within four hours of my first shift (.轮班),I had angry customers who complained how slow I was. I watched in fear as a kid spilled his milk everywhere, and I heard the words that no 16-year-old boy or anyone for that matter wants to hear "Mike, there's a problem in the men's bathroom and you might want gloves for this one." I realized right away that working at the restaurant was not going to be a picnic. The manager expected a clean environment and particularly, fast service with a friendly smile.Over three years later I still work at that restaurant whenever I go home during vacations. I love my co-workers there and all the customers know who I am. Every morning the same senior citizens come in and get their morning coffees. They chat with us workers and joke around. Our smiles have just as much to do with them making us a part of their everyday lives as the coffee does. From my first job at the restaurant, I learned teamwork and devotion. I also learned stayingpositive no matter how rough things seem to get. I will forever carry the experience that I gained at the restaurant with me as I go forward in my life.81. Why did the author apply everywhere that summer?(No more than 12 words) (2 marks)82.What did the manager particularly expect the workers to do?(No more than 14 words) (3 marks)83.Why does the author still work at the restaurant during vacations?(No more than 13 words) (2 marks)84. In 2012, the Hunan college entrance examination was a tough challenge for many students. The English test, in particular, was quite demanding. The reading comprehension section required a good understanding of the passages, and the writing section called for creativity and critical thinking. Overall, it was a test that really pushed students to their limits. The topics covered in the exam were quite diverse. From environmental issues to social problems, students had to demonstrate a wide range of knowledge and awareness. This diversity made the exam more interesting, but also more challenging. It required students to think on their feet and come up with well-structured responses on the spot. One of the most difficult parts of the exam was the listening section. The recordings were fast-paced and covered a wide range of accents and dialects. This made it hard for some students to catch every word, and they had torely on their overall understanding of the context to answer the questions.Despite the challenges, many students felt a sense of accomplishment after completing the exam. They knew that they had given it their best shot, and that was all they could do. Whether they performed well or not, they could walk away knowing that they had faced the challenge head-on.In the end, the Hunan college entrance examination wasa true test of students' knowledge, skills, and resilience. It pushed them to think critically, work under pressure, and demonstrate their abilities in a variety of areas. It was a tough challenge, but it was also a valuableexperience that would help them grow and develop as individuals.。

In the tranquility of dawn, as the first rays of sunlight pierced through the dense canopy of trees, a young girl named Li Mei sat by the window, her eyes fixed on the distant horizon. She was not merely admiring the view; she was contemplating her journey, a journey that would culminate in the most significant examination of her life—the National College Entrance Examination, or Gaokao.Li Mei was a diligent student, but she was not without her struggles. English had always been a challenging subject for her, a mountain she had to climb with every ounce of her determination. Despite the difficulties, she never wavered in her resolve to conquer this academic peak. Her days were a relentless cycle of studying, practicing, and refining her skills. She would spend hours poring over textbooks, listening to English broadcasts, and engaging in conversations with her peers to improve her fluency. The months leading up to the Gaokao were a testament to her unwavering dedication. Li Mei would rise before the sun, her day beginning with an hour of English vocabulary exercises. She would then attend school, where she would immerse herself in the intricacies of grammar and syntax. After school, she would return home to a regimen of reading comprehension and essay writing, often working late into the night under the soft glow of her desk lamp. Her teachers noticed her progress and were impressed by her tenacity. They offered guidance and encouragement, but it was Li Mei's own perseverance that truly propelled her forward. She understood that mastery of a language was not a destination, but a journey—a journey that required patience, practice, and an insatiable thirst for knowledge. As the day of the Gaokao approached, Li Mei felt a mix of excitement and anxiety. She knew that she had prepared as best as she could, but the pressure to perform well was immense. On the day of the English exam, she entered the examination hall with a calm demeanor, her mind clear and focused. The essay section of the exam was a narrative of her own experiences, a reflection on the power of perseverance. She wrote about the early mornings, the late nights, and the countless hours spent in pursuit of her goal. She spoke of the challenges she faced and the lessons she learned along the way. Her essay was a tribute to the resilience that lies within each of us, a reminder that with determination and hard work, no obstacle is insurmountable. When the results were announced, Li Mei was overjoyed to find that she had achieved a perfect score in English. Her essay had resonated with the examiners, who recognized not only her linguistic prowess but also the depth of her character and the strength of her spirit. Her achievement was a testament to the power of perseverance and a beacon of inspiration for others embarking on their own journeys. In the end, Li Mei's story is not just about academic success; it is a narrative of human potential and the transformative power of determination. It serves as a reminder that with the right mindset and an unyielding commitment to one's goals, even the most daunting challenges can be overcome.。

Materials from which ist is made are plentiful in nature, found in everyting ranging from shrimp shells, insect bodies to living plant. That makes shrilk low cost, and its mass production possible should it be used for products demanding a lot of material.Work on shrilk is continuing in the lab. The inventors said the material becomes flexibleWhen wet ,so they’re exploring ways to use it in wet environments. Tody , rivers are controlled for many reasons, primarily to maintain reliable water supplies for daily, agricultural and industrial needs, for power generation, fornavigation (航行),andTo prevent flooding.Rivr control is achieved by channelization, a term that covers a range of river engineerin works, including widening, deepening, straightening and stabilization of banks, and by the construction of dams.An important period of channelization took place in Europe during the 19th century, when many large rivers were straightened and their beds deepened. One of the most dramatically changed was the Tisza, designed to reduce flooding and makeland for agriculture, included cutting off more than 100 meanders (河曲),shorteningthe river’s length by nearly400 kilometers. One of the most common ways in which people control rivers is by damming them. The past 50 years or so has seen an increase in dam construction worldwide, and at the beginning of the 21st century, there were atout 800,000 dams globally, some towering more than 200 meters in height.Despits their success, many dams also cause significant environmental changesthat prove harmful. Some particularly deep reservoirs (水库) can bring aboutearthquakes due to the stress on their bottom rocks caused by huge volumes of water.
以下是某同学摘录的句子:“Your future depends on many things, but mostly on you”。
(passage 1)In the English Reading Week, one of my classmates recommended a quote to us, which goes like this: “Your future depends on many things, but mostly on you.” And, I am totally for it. Affected by many factors, such as surroundings, education background, living conditions and some other things, tomorrow is unknown to us. But that your future is in your hand is already known. So there is no doubt that you are the only master of your future.A 25-year-old young man, who lost his arms at an early age, won the Chinese Talent by playing the piano with his feet. Though disabled, he didn’t abandon himself to despair. On the contrary, he devoted all his energy to piano learning. Thanks to his hard work and determination, he can play it as well as normal people now. And I think he is a real strong man who has brightened his own future.(passage 2)In the English Reading Week, one of my classmates recommended a quote to us, which goes like this: “Your future depends on many things, but mostly on you.”As far as I’m concerned, I completely agree with the view. Of course, our future depends on many things such as our living environment, opportunities, luck, others’ help and etc. But it is we ourselves that determine our future. Our positive attitude, our determination, our confidence and our sense of discipline are the keys to our future.Madame Curie was a good example to us. In her times, women were not admitted to university in her motherland, Poland, so she was forced to leave her homeland and studied in France. She often said: we should believe every one of us can do something and above all we should believe in ourselves. It was her confidence that made her discover radium and later win the Nobel Prize. So I firmly hold the belief that our future is in our hands.Directions: Write an English composition in 120 - 150 words according to the instructions given below in Chinese.

It is thin, clear, flexible and strong.A major benefit of the material is its biodegradability.Plastic's toughness and flexibility represented a revolution in materials science during the 1950s and '60s.Decades later, however, plastic's very durability(耐用性) is raising questions about how appropriate it is for one-time products such as plastic bags, or short-lived consumer goods, used in the home for a few years and then cast into a landfill where they will degrade for centuries. What is the point of making something that lasts 1,000 years?Shrilk not only will degrade in a landfill, but its basic components are used as fertilizer(肥料), and so will enrich the soil.Shrilk has great potential, the inventors said.Materials from which it is made are plentiful in nature, found in everything ranging from shrimp shells, insect bodies to living plants. That makes shrilk low cost, and its mass production possible should it be used for products demanding a lot of material.Work on shrilk is continuing in the lab.The inventors said the material becomes flexible when wet, so they're exploring ways to use it in wet environments. They're also developing simpler production processes, which could be used for non-medical products, like for computer cases and other products inside the home. They're even exploring combining it with other materials, like carbon fibers, to give it new properties.{TS}Paragraph I of the passage is mainly about shritk's__________.A. remarkabledesignB. interestingnameC. majorfeaturesD. basicelements(12)What has become a concern about plastic?A.
可是“Rome is not built in a day.(罗马并非一天建成的)”,好作文也不是一天练成的。

As is known to all, students in China can’t study both arts and science. Therefore, a choice between them is bound to be made.At the end of my first year in high school, I decided to study science rather than arts. And the reasons are as follows: The most important one is that I love science, which can show me the mysteries of nature and the universe. What’s more, I’m good at it. So, it is far easier for me to learn science than arts. Last but not least, I want to become a scientist in the future. It is science that will equip me with necessary abilities. Now, years have passed, and my affection for science is much greater than before. I hold the view firmly that my choice is absolutely right. I woke up to the sound of my alarm blaring in my ear. Another day, another dollar, as they say. I stumbled out of bed and into the shower, trying to wake myself up enough to face the day ahead.Breakfast was a quick affair, just a bowl of cereal and a cup of coffee. I grabbed my bag and headed out the door, ready to face whatever the day had in store for me.The morning commute was as crowded and chaotic as ever.I squeezed onto the bus, sandwiched between a businessman in a sharp suit and a student with headphones blasting. We all jostled and bumped our way through the city streets, each lost in our own little world.Work was a whirlwind of meetings and deadlines. I barely had time to catch my breath before it was time to head to the next appointment. But somehow, I managed to make it through the day in one piece. After work, I met up with some friends for dinner. We laughed and joked, catching up on each other's lives. It was nice to unwind and relax after a long day. Finally, I made it back home and collapsed onto the couch. Another day down, and I was ready to do it all over again tomorrow. Such is life, I suppose.。

Dear Editor,As a student reader, I am writing to talk about the English textbooks published by your house. These books have many advantages. One of them is that we can find a variety of topics, such as science, culture and history. These topics, 1 think, arc very popular with us students. What's more, along with the texts there are many beautiful and colorful pictures, which can help us understand English better. Even the students who used to dislike English have turned out to be interested in the subject. However, some of the texts have too many new words and expressions which are hard for us. Therefore, I'd like to suggest changing them into easier ones.Best regards!

如例文中,“Getting back what you have lost would be an unforgettable experience.”
如例文中,“Last Monday, I lost my expensive cellphone, on which my name was inscribed. Fortunately, it was returned.”
例文中“That morning ” “On arriving at school” “ When the exam ended”等标志词句,都清晰明了地展现了“时间记叙法”的行文思路,也使文章读起来更加流畅。
“I a m firmly convinced of the significance of honesty, which will contribute to building a warm and harmonious society.”
