(1) Boys and girls, We high school students do have some growing pains, but we an get rid of them correctly and wisely.First , some of us are upset about their body shapes and looks, which is unnecessary and not important at all. We needn鈥檛care about it. It is one鈥檚inner beauty that matters.Second, we sometimes seem to be misunderstood by our teachers, parents and classmates.Facing this, we can find a proper time to have a heart-to-heart talk with them, tying to remove the misunderstanding. Some of us have fewer friends. I think being open-minded and friendly will do you good. Third, we may fall behind others in our studies, which makes us stressed. Actually we may encourage ourselves to work efficiently, full of determination as well as improving our study methods by turning to our teachers and classmates for advice. Last, some of us don鈥檛have much pocket money,so they feel unhappy. Isn鈥檛it strange? So long as the money can afford our daily expenses, that will do. And we can also learn to spend money in a more reasonable way! That鈥檚all. Thank you. (2).Tracking My Growth The process of growing up is complex for every person, for there are many influential factors in a person鈥檚growth as well as the development of his personality. As for me, what has affected me most in my both growth and personality are family and friends, the two equally important factors. After one was born, the first surroundings is the family in which he will grow up. Family plays a significant role in shaping children鈥檚character because it鈥檚children鈥檚most direct source of knowledge and experiences. Those who are brought up in good families tend to posses many pleasant characters. On the other hand, fiends in some ways influence him more rapidly than families do.Friends have more many different opinions and personalities. Discussing with them build up his personality. Frankly speaking, I get lots of valuable things frommy friends. Family offers me warmth and care. Friends give me strength and horizons. Therefore, both of them are most influential in my growth.。

People do this all the time in their own language, so it is necessary to do this in a foreign language, too. Here are some examples.1. "What's the matter?" "I went to a party last night, so I…"2. "I feel so tired these days."" I think y ou'd better…"3."Of course, she never stops talking. She is one of the most…"You can see from the above three examples that the context (上下文) helps a lot in understanding what is being talked about. So "guessing "is very important in understanding English, especially spoken English.61.This passage tells us mainly about _________.A. the importance of "guessing " in learning a foreign languageB. how to guess what one is going to talk aboutC. some examples of right guessingD. how important it is to guess all the time62.From the context, we can see maybe the finished answer in EXAMPLE 1 is _________.A. From the passage we can infer (推断) that guessing is _______in learning a foreign language.A. the only wayB. more important in spoken English than in written EnglishC. more important than any other wayD. more important in written English than in spoken EnglishPassage CNow satellites are helping to forecast(预报)the weather. They are in space, and they can reach any part of the world. The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere(大气), because this is where the weather forms. They send these pictures to the weather stations. So meteorologists(气象学家)can see the weather of any part of the world. From the pictures, the scientists can often say how the weather will change.Today, nearly five hundred weather stations in sixty countries receive satellite pictures. When they receive new pictures, the meteorologists compare them with earlier ones. Perhaps they may find that the clouds have changed during the last few hours. This may mean that the weather on the ground may soon change, too. In their next weather forecast, the meteorologists can say this.So the weather satellites are a great help to the meteorologists. Before satellites were invented, the scientists could forecast the weather for about 24 or 48 hours. Now they can make good forecasts for three or five days. Soon, perhaps, they may be able to forecast the weather for a week or more ahead.66. Satellites travel _____________.A. in spaceB. in the atmosphereC. above the groundD. above space67. Why do we use the weather satellites to take pictures of the atmosphere? Because __________.A. the weather satellites can do it easilyB. clouds form thereC. the weather forms thereD. the pictures can forecast the weather68. Meteorologists forecast the weather __________.A. when they have received satellite picturesB. after they have compared new satellite pictures with earlier onesC. before they received satellite picturesD. during they study satellite pictures69. Maybe we’ll soon be able to forecast the weather for ________.A. one dayB. two daysC. five daysD. seven days or even longer70. The main idea of this passage is that satellites are now used in _________.A. taking pictures of the atmosphereB. receiving pictures of the atmosphereC. doing other work in many waysD. weather forecastingPart IV Writing(45marks)Section A(10marks)Directions: read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage.Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer. It is not surprising to hear that more and more people are trying to lose weight by using weight-loss pills. It is becoming a very popular way to deal with weight because then all that people need to do is simply take the pill and carry on with their normal eating habits all the while losing weight. As with the seemingly endless supply of weight-loss programs, there is a wide range of weight-loss pills that you can choose from and they go from prescription drugs(处方药) to natural products that are supposed to have same effect but offer a safer choice.Weight-loss pills can be highly effective when the appropriate drug is chosen for the patient and many people have quiet obvious results over a relatively short period of time once they have found a solution that has worked for them.Still, you need to be aware that these natural weight-loss pills can have side effects and some serious reactions can be extremely dangerous to your health. No matter what type of pills or products you are taking to lose weight, you really should discuss everything with your doctor first to ensure that your health won’t be in danger and in particular if you have any other health problems that need to be discussed. With prescription drugs you are going to have to consult your doctor, so it would be a wise decision to talk about all the alternatives before deciding what the best for you is.On the other hand there have been many people who have had obvious problems with weight-loss pills they have been using, whether it is prescription drugs or natural products. In some cases, these substances have no effect on the user.It certainly isn’t worth endangering your life to lose weight as weight loss should actually be about improving you life.Section B(10marks) (2,4,4)DIRECTIONS: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage. The more money a married woman earns, the less housework she will do regardless of how much her spouse earns, according to a new study.A researcher at the University of Massachusetts Amherst found that big paychecks (薪水) equal less cooking and cleaning in a study of 918 women in double-income families. Married women who made $40,000 or more a year spent nearly one hour less on housework per day than women who earned $10,000 or less, according to the findings based on data (数据) from the National Survey of Families and Households.“Up to this point, people have thought that the important thing was how much money a woman makes compared to her husband, but the only thing that matters is how much money she earns,” Sanjiv Gupta, the author of the study, said in an interview. The study, which is published in the Journal of Marriage and Family, showed that for every $7,500 in annual income that a married woman earned, she performed one hour less of housework each week.Gupta confirmed the connection between money, housework and spousal relationships in a separate study using data on nearly 2,000 couples in the United States and Europe. The average earnings of American women increased by $6,200 between 1965 and1995,according to the U.S.Census Bureau (人口普查局).During that time, the amount of time married women spent on weekly chores fell by 14.6 hours.Since the husband’s earnings had no effect on the amount of housework a woman does, thefinding suggests that women are using their own money to reduce their housework by doing things such as ordering food from restaurants instead of cooking, and hiring cleaners instead of doing the cleaning themselves,Gupta said.81.Find in the passage a word closest in meaning to the underlined word “spouse”.(回答词数不超过1个)82.How do high income women reduce the amount of housework they do?(回答词数不超过8个)83.What is the main idea of the passage? The following are some tips for you.People equal friendsFriends usually begin with strangers. Getting in touch with other people is the first step to make a friend. Friends can’t be made in empty air. Best friends take time to make.Friends understand friendsFriends understand each other when talking. Many unpleasant personal quarrels can be avoided if you will take the time to understand others’ feelings and points of view.Friends touch friendsTouching is a warm from of communication between friends. When you see best friends communicating, you will notice them stand close together, touch each other comfortably and listen to each other. Sometimes a friendly touch is more powerful than words.Friends praise friendsPraise is a powerful tool to make a friend. Honest praise can affect (影响) your friends’ lives. So try to praise your friends, including your general ones.Friends can be loyal (忠诚的) and trustworthyTrust and loyalty go hand in hand for friends. Friends can share secrets with you, because good friends never break confidence (信心) and are loyal forever.36. From Joy Steven’s words, we can conc lude that ________.A. a friend in need is a friend indeedB. it is never too late to make a friendC. it is late to make a friend when you need oneD. everyone needs a friend in his life37. To make and keep many friends, you need to do the following EXCEPT ___________.A. get in touch with peopleB. understand your friendsC. praise your friendsD. quarrel with your friends38. The passage mainly tells us ______________.A. how to communicate with a friendB. how to develop friendshipC. when to make a friendD. how to praise a friendBLiving and dealing with kids can be a tough job these days, but living and dealing with parents can be even tougher. If I have learned anything in my 16 years, it is that communication is very important, both when you disagree and when you get along. With any relationship, you need to let other person know how you are feeling. If you are not able to communicate, you drift apart. When you are mad at your parents, or anyone else, not talking to them doesn’t solve anything.Communication begins with the concerns (关心) of another. It means that you can’t just come home from school, go up to your room and ignore (不理睬) everyone. Even if you just say “Hi”, and see how their day was for five minutes, it is better than nothing. If you looked up the word “communication” in a dictionary, it would say “the exchange of ideas, the conveyance(表达)of information, correspondence(通信), means of communication: a letter or a message”. To maintain (保持) a good relationship, you must keep communication strong. Let people know how you feel, even if it’s just by writing a note. When dealing with parents, you always have to make them feel good about how they are doing as a parent. If you are trying to make the m see something as you see it, tell them that you’ll listen to what they have to say, but ask them politely to listen to you. Yelling or walking away only makes the situation worse. This is an example: one night, Sophie went to a street party with her friends. She knew she had to be home by midnight after the fireworks, but she didn’t feel she could just ask to go home. That would be rude. After all, they had been nice enough to take her along with them. Needless to say, she was late getting home. Her parents were mad at first, not when Sophie explained why she was late, they weren’t as mad and let the incident go. Communication is the key factor here. If Sophie’s parents had not been willing to listen, Sophie would have been in a lot of trouble.Communicati on isn’t a one-way deal: it goes both ways. Just remember: if you get into a situation like Sophie’s, telling the other person how you feel---listening is the key factor to communication.39. In the writer’s view, dealing with parents is __________ than wi th children.A. more difficultB. easierC. more uninterestingD. more interesting40. The main idea of the second paragraph is __________.A. the importance of friendshipB. to make your feeling known to othersC. the importance of communicationD. the disagreement between generations41. When parents and children are in communication, the key to a happy relationship is that __________.A. children should always obey their parentsB. they should be equalC. parents play the leading partD. both make the opposite know their feelings42. The example in this passage proves that ___________.A. Sophie’s parents are willing to listen to herB. Sophie is very polite to her parentsC. Sophie did well in explaining her being lateD. communication is the solution to misunderstandingCWhen I was six, Dad brought home a dog one day, who was called “Brownie”. My brothers and I all loved Brownie and did different things with her. One of us would walk her, another would feed her, then there were baths, playing catch and many other games. Brownie, in return, loved each and every one of us. One thing that most touched my heart was that she would go to whoever was sick and just be with them. We always felt better when she was around. One day, as I was getting her food, she chewed up (咬破) one of Dad’s shoes, which had to be thrown away in the end. I knew Dad would be mad and I had to let her know what she did was wrong. When I looked at her and said, “Bad girl,” she looked down at the groun d and then went and hid. I saw a tear in her eyes.Brownie turned out to be more than just our family pet, she went everywhere with us. People would stop and ask if they could pet her. Of course she’d let anyone pet her. She was just the most lovable dog. There were many times when we’d be out walking and a small child would come over and pull on her hair. She never barked (吠) or tried to get away. The funny thing is that she would smile. This frightened people because they thought she was showing her teeth. Far from the truth, she loved everyone. Now many years have passed since Brownie died of old age. I still miss days when she was with us.43. What would Brownie do when someone was ill in the family?A. Look at them sadly.B. Keep them company.C. Play games with them.D. Touch them gently.44. We can infer from Paragraph 2 that Brownie__________.A. would eat anything when hungryB. felt sorry for her mistakeC. loved playing hide-and-seekD. disliked the author’s dad45. Some people got frightened by Brownie when she__________.A. smiledB. barkedC. rushed to themD. tried to be funny46. Which of the following best describes Brownie?A. ShyB. PoliteC. BraveD. CaringDI grew up in a house where the TV was seldom turned on and with one wall in my bedroom entirely lined with bookshelves, most of my childhood was spent on books I could get hold of. In fact, I grew up thinking of reading as natural as breathing and books unbelievably powerful in shaping perspectives (观点) by creating worlds we could step into, take part in and live in.With this unshakable belief, I, at fourteen, decided to become a writer. Here too, reading became useful. Every writer starts off knowing that he has something to say, but being unable to find the right ways to say it. He has to find his own voice by reading widely and discovering which parts of the writers he agrees or disagrees with, or agrees with so strongly that it reshapes his own world. He cannot wri te without loving to read, because only through reading other people’s writing can one discover what works, what doesn’t and, in the end, together with lots of practice, what voice he has.Now I am in college, and have come to realize how important it is to read fiction (文学作品). As a law student, my reading is in fact limited to subject matter—the volume (量) of what I have to read for classes every week means there is little time to read anything else. Such reading made it all the clearer to me that I live in a very small part in this great place called life. Reading fiction reminds me that there is life beyond my own. It allows me to travel across the high seas and along the Silk Road, all from the comfort of my own armchair, to experience, though secondhand, exciting experiences that I wouldn't necessarily be able to have in my lifetime.47. What can be inferred about the author as a child?A. He never watched TV.B. He read what he had to.C. He found reading unbelievable.D. He considered reading part of his life.48. The underlined word “voice” in the second paragraph most probably means “”.A. an ideaB. a sound qualityC. a way of writingD. a world to write about49. What effect does reading have on the author?A. It helps him to realize his dream.B. It opens up a wider world for him.C. It makes his college life more interesting.D. It increases his interest in worldwide travel.50.
