He had been forced to take a job stocking shelves at a local grocery store for $8.90 an hour when he couldn't get work fixing floors. On a good day in Australia, he now makes as much as 50 Australian dollars( US $50.21 ) an hour—about twice the amount for a typical flooring job in the US. He plans to start his own flooring business.“I can make what I did in a week in the US in less than a day here”,said Mr. Davila, who lives near a mining boom town in Western Australia.Australian government figures show just under 7,000 Americans currently work on longterm visas, an 80% jump over the past five citizens are now the thirdlargest group applying for socalled 457 work visas, after British and Indian nationals. Americans with degrees in areas such as accounting or mine engineering, as well as other skilled workers, can obtain a nonrenewable(不可更新的) permit for as much as a threeyear stay. After that, they can apply for the renewable 457, which allows up to a fouryear stay. The need for workers is particularly pressing in Western Australia. The mining state's unemployment rate was 4.5% in November, below the national average of 5.2%. Drivers of heavy trucks can pull in sixfigure salaries while experienced crane(起重机) operators can earn hundreds of thousands a year. Attracting skilled workers is a shift for Australia, which historically sent many of its most highly educated to the US and Europe, according to migration data.36.________, a growing number of Americans go to work in Australia.A.As a result of the encouragement of AustraliaB.As a result of high unemployment in the USC.Out of their ambition of finding valuable resourcesD.Out of their determination to realize their dreams37.It can be inferred from the passage that 457 work visas are ________.A.for skilled workers in some fieldsB.for students on the building projectC.especially for American workersD.especially for those out of work38.It is implied in the passage that ________.A.foreigners have to give up their original professional jobs when working in AustraliaB.it is possible for foreigners to earn more money in Australia than in their own countriesC.there are more US citizens hoping to work in Australia than from other countriesD.Australians think it fair to exchange their talent with American skilled workers39.Which part of Australia needs workers particularly?A.Northwestern Australia.B.Eastern Australia.C.Southeastern Australia.D.Western Australia.Ⅳ.短文填词Dear George,Thank you for your letter. Isn't it tempting to lie just a little, to claim on the form that your diploma(毕业文凭) represents a Harvard degree or that you finished an extra couple of years back at State University?More and more people are turning to an utter deception(欺骗) like this to land their first jobs or to move ahead in their careers. For personnel officers, like most Americans, value degrees from famous schools. A job applicant may have a good education anyway, but he or she assumes that chances of being hired are better with a diploma from a wellknown university.Registrars(注册主任) at most wellknowncolleges say that they deal with dishonest claims like these at the rate of about one per week.Personnel officers do check up on degrees listed on application forms. If it turns out that an applicant is lying, most colleges are unwilling to accuse the applicant directly. One Ivy League school refers to them as “special cases”. One wellknown West Coast school, in perhaps the most delicate phrase of all, says these claims are made by “no such people”.To avoid c omplete lies, some job seekers claim that they “attended” or “were associated with” a college or university. After careful checking, a personnel officer may discover that “attending” means being dismissed after one semester. It may be that “being associated with”a college means that the job seeker visited his younger brother for a football weekend. One school that keeps records of false claims says that the practice d ates back at least to the turn of the century—that's when they began keeping records, anyhow. If you don't want to lie or even stretch the truth, there are companies that will sell you a fake diploma. One company, with offices in New York and on the West Coast, will put your name on a diploma from any number of nonexistent colleges. The price begins at around twenty dollars for a diploma from “Smoot State University”.The prices increase rapidly for a de gree from the “University of Purdue”.As there i s no Smoot State and the real school in Indiana is properly called Purdue University, the prices seem rather high for one sheet of paper.36.The writer mainly wants to tell us that ________.A.college degrees can now be purchased easilyB.nowadays it is very hard for people to find jobsC.lying about college degrees is becoming a widespread problemD.employers are no longer interested in applicants' actual performances 37.The underlined word “utter” in the second paragraph means ________.A.thorough B.carefulC.incomplete D.spoken38.Once finding applicants with false diplomas, most colleges would ________.A.keep the records of themB.drive them out of collegeC.avoid direct conflicts with themD.accuse them of such behavior39.We can learn from the passage that ________.A.US employers value their job applicants with a degree from top universities B.University of Purdue and Purdue University are the same schoolC.people with fake diplomas can get their first jobs in the US easilyD.people pay the same price for a fake diploma from different universities Ⅳ.短文填词Saying “thank you” is one of the bases of good manners. Often we don't say it well enough. We usually don't 40.________ (忘记) to say “thank you” to 41.________ (陌生人) when they help us, but we do not always 42.e________ our thanks to our friends. But I think it is just as important to be 43.t________ to the former as to the 44.________ (后者). We also need to say “thank you” to the things 45.h________ us so often but unable to speak, such as air, water, trees, animals and so on, because without 46.________, we could not exist. But saying “thank you” is 47.________ from enough. We should be willing to help others when they are 48.________ need. There are currently 791 pupils on the school roll(名单). The school has a long and distinguished history, and it is also one of the oldest charities in the country, providing scholarships to pupils and organizing a Charity of the Term. The curriculum(课程) at King's is based on strong academic roots. It emphasizes and relies upon what is best in traditional independent school education: scholarly excellence supported by a car ing and tutorial system, and a wideranging cocurricular programme. However, it is continually adapting and reacting to the changing demands of modern education: new subjects are added, new teaching techniques are adopted, and there is an increasing awareness of the need to provide programmes of study that match individual needs and skills. The curriculum is divided into three units: the Lower School(Year 9 ), an introductory year; the Middle School(Years 10 and 11 ), working to GCSEs; and the Sixth Form(Years 12 and 13), taking AS and A levels.Full details can be found in: Shell Guide and Handbook; Middle School Academic Guide 2009—2011; Middle School Academic Guide 2010—2012; Sixth Form Guide 2009—2011 and Sixth Form Guide 2010—2012.Formal and structured educational support, for those who need it, is available at all levels. The wellstocked library is open 7 days and 6 evenings per week. ICT facilities (including the Internet) are available for all and the whole school(studies within the houses as well as classrooms) is extensively networked.Pupils are offered extensive career advice throughout their time at King's. Almost all go to university, either immediately or following a GAP year. The most popular university destinations are Cambridge, Bristol, Nottingham, Durham, Leeds, Oxford, Edinburgh, Manchester, and University College, London.Director of Studies: Geoff Cocksworth: grc @ kingsExaminations Officer: Elaine McDowell: eam @ kingsschool. co. uk.Click here for more information.16.The best title of the passage might be ________.A.The King's SchoolB.The Curriculum in BritainC.New Teaching TechniquesD.British Education System17.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A.The King's School, Canterbury is a famous high school in Britain.B.The curriculum at King's is best in traditional and modern education.C.All pupils of the school go to university immediately after they graduate.D.Pupils' dormitories as well as classrooms are provided with network.18.The following can be inferred from the passage EXCEPT that________.A.the King's School focuses on pupils' individual developmentB.pupils in the King's School who pass GCSEs will go to universityC.pupils in the King's School have an easy access to the school library D.pupils in the King's School receive good education19.The passage is probably taken from a ________.A.handbook B.websiteC.magazine D.newspaperBThe average temperature around the world is rising. People living in the US Midwest might find a fact hard to believe, though. The scientists suggest that the change in the Midwest climate may have happened because of farming. The first study was led by David Changnon, a climatologist(气候学家) at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.Changnon and his team studied temperature records from the sites in the Midwest. They found that since 1970, the average temperature in the region during July and August has gone down—by up to one degree Fahrenheit(华氏度)—from what it was during the years between 1930 and 1969. Their investigation also showed that the average rainfall in those states during those two months has increased. Between 1970 and 2009, about 0.33 inch more rain fell than between 1930 and 1969.These_changes may be connected by humidity(湿度), Changnon says. Humidityis the measure of how much moisture is in the air. Humid air, which contains a lot of moisture, takes longer to heat up than dry air, Changnon notes. And humid air often releases its moisture through rainfall. So where did the extra moisture in the air come from?Changnon points to farms in the region. As plants grow, they pull moisture from the ground and release it into the air. And among plants, soybeans (大豆) and corn pla nts release a lot of moisture. Midwestern farms now plant more soybeans and corn than in the past, with 97 percent of farmland today planted with these two crops. In the 1930s, corn and soybeans covered only about 57 percent, Changnon says. He also notes that the plants are planted closer together now than they used to be, so there are more plants per acre than in the past. The second study, like Changnon's, also found an increase in rainfall in the same area. But it points to another possible source for the increased moisture. Alan Robock at Rutgers University was part of the team that produced the second study and presented the group's findings. The team found that irrigation practices in the Great Plains have changed over the years. The researchers studied a vast area in the region. Personality is the way a person acts, feels and thinks. Some people are aggressive and always in a hurry. They often become angry when things do not happen the way they planned. They belong to “Type A” personality. Studies suggest that these people often get stressrelated disorders. The “Type B” personality is calmer. These people are able to deal with all kinds of situations more easily. As a result, they are less affected by stress.Studies have also shown that men and women deal with stress differently. Women seem to be better able to deal with stress than men are. However, experts say women are three times more likely to develop depression in reaction to the stress in their lives. American writer John Gray became famous for his book, Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus. He notes that men and women have opposite ways of dealing with stress. For a man, the best way is to rest and forget about daily problems. But a woman suffering from stress needs to talk about her problems.Experts say there are several ways to deal with stress, including deep breathing, exercise, eating healthy foods, getting enough rest and balancing the time spent in working and playing.Exercise is one of the most effective stressreduction measures, as physical changes from exercise make you feel better. In addition, exercise can also improve the body's defense system against disease.Keeping stress to yourself can make problems worse. Experts say that expressing emotions to friends or family members or writing down your feelings can help reduce stress. And they also suggest that people should attempt to accept or change stressful situations whenever possible.36.According to the experts, ________.A.people respond to stress quite differentlyB.people make the same response to stressC.unlike women, men tend to feel depressed more easilyD.personality has nothing to do with how we experience stress37.Compared with “Type A” personalit y, “Type B” personality ________.A.causes more troublesB.is less able to cope with different situati onsC.is more easily affected by stressD.tends to solve problems more peacefully38.By saying “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus”, John Gray means that they ________.A.experience emotions in a different wayB.cope with stress in a different wayC.suffer from stress in a similar wayD.develop stress in the opposite way39.If you want to reduce your stress, you can ________.A.take some exerciseB.keep it to yourselfC.remain silentD.ignore the stressful situationⅣ.短文填词It's believed that you can quite easily improve your ability to remember things through practice and exercise. For the next hour Dad did the dishes, singing songs like“Who Put the Chow in Mrs. Murphy's Chowder”? I suppose it was strange for a father to wear an apron—even one with race cars—but I never thought much of it until that Sunday when we walked home from church together.“Tommy”, he said,“There comes a time in every boy's life when he must take on responsibilities.” “Responsibilities?” I asked.“Yes. It's time you took a greater role in the household. Starting today, I want you to do the dishes on Sunday morning so your mother and I can relax.” “The dishes?” “Anything wrong with taking over the dishes?”I started to say something about a man's job, but I knew immediately that my protests would fall on deaf ears. I didn't taste a bit of breakfast that morning. My father announced to my mother, “Let's go to read the paper, honey. Our oldest son has generously offered to fill the position.”So this was what my life had come to. People often say there is a special chemistry between a father and a son. He came back into the kitchen just as I was about to storm out. In his right hand was the old apron. want you to have thi s, Tommy. It'll keep your clothes from getting wet.” And before I could do anything, he had put that apron on me. “Thanks, Son. D.Regretful. B All over the world, libraries have begun the Herculean task of making faithful digital copies of the books, images and recordings that preserve the intellectual effort of humankind. For armchair scholars, the work promises to bring such a wealth of information to the desktop that the present Internet may seem amateurish in retrospect. … Librarians see three clear benefits to going digital. First, it helps them preserve rare and fragile objects without denying access to those who wish to study them. The British Library, for example, holds the only medieval manuscript of Beowulf in London. Only qualified scholars were allowed to see it until Kevin S. Kiernan of the University of Kentucky scanned the manuscript with three different lightsources(revealing detail not normally apparent to the naked eye) and put the images up on the Internet for anyone to peruse(细读). Tokyo's National Diet Library is similarly creating highly detailed digital photographs of 1,236 woodblock prints, scrolls and other materials it considers national treasures so that researchers can scrutinize them without handling the originals.patrons can retrieve them in seconds rather than minutes. Several people can simultaneously read the same book or view the same picture. Clerks are spared the chore of reshelving. And libraries could conceivably use the Internet to landtheir virtual collections to those who are unable to visit in person. The third advantage of electronic copies is that they occupy millimeters of space on a magnetic disk rather than meters on a shelf. Expanding library buildings is increasingly costly. The University of California at Berkeley recently spent $46 million on an underground addition to house 1.5 million books—an average cost of $30 per volume. The price of disk storage, in contrast, has fallen to about $2 per 300-page publication and continues to drop. 20.The best title for this passage would be “________”.s) in the text offer(s) furtherexplanation of the central idea? carried with either a microprocessor and a memory chip or only a memory chip that is not programmable. The microprocessor card can add, delete, and deal with the information on the card, while a memory-chip card can only do one thing.Smart cards, unlike magnetic stripe cards, can do many different things and hold a lot of information. In this way, they do not need to get information from a faraway place when they are used.Today, there are several kinds of smart cards, all of which are very popular in the market: IC (Integrated Circuit) Microprocessor Cards (Chip Cards) offer a larger memory and better security than the traditional magnetic stripe cards do.Chip cards can also hold data. These cards are used for many things. Thus, chips have been the main platform for cards that hold a secure digital identity. Some examples of these cards are:Cards that hold money.Cards that provide safe access to a network.Cards that allow setting stop boxes on televisions to remain safe from privacy.Optical Memory Cards look like cards with a piece of CD on the top.Optical Memory Cards can store up to 4MB of data. But once written, the data can not be changed or removed. Thus, this type of card is good for keeping records, such as medical files, driving records or travel histories.Today, these have no processors in them(although this is coming in the near future). While the cards are almost as cheap as chip cards, the card readers are expensive.Title:21.________ Cards15.A 16.A 17.B 18.C 19.D 20.B21.Smart 22.Advantages 23.security 24.Memory 25.doctors 26.travelers 27.cost28.Unchangeable 29.readers30.memory。

There are currently 791 pupils on the school roll(名单). The school has a long and distinguished history, and it is also one of the oldest charities in the country, providing scholarships to pupils and organizing a Charity of the Term. The curriculum(课程) at King's is based on strong academic roots. It emphasizes and relies upon what is best in traditional independent school education: scholarly excellence supported by a caring and tutorial system, and a wide-ranging co-curricular programme. However, it is continually adapting and reacting to the changing demands of modern education: new subjects are added, new teaching techniques are adopted, and there is an increasing awareness of the need to provide programmes of study that match individual needs and skills. The curriculum is divided into three units: the Lower School(Year 9 ), an introductory year; the Middle School(Years 10 and 11 ), working to GCSEs; and the Sixth Form(Years 12 and 13), taking AS and A levels. Full details can be found in: Shell Guide and Handbook; Middle School Academic Guide 2009—2011; Middle School Academic Guide 2010—2012; Sixth Form Guide 2009—2011 and Sixth Form Guide 2010—2012. Formal and structured educational support, for those who need it, is available at all levels. The well-stocked library is open 7 days and 6 evenings per week. ICT facilities (including the Internet) are available for all and the whole school(studies within the houses as well as classrooms) is extensively networked. Pupils are offered extensive career advice throughout their time at King's. Almost all go to university, either immediately or following a GAP year. The most popular university destinations are Cambridge, Bristol, Nottingham, Durham, Leeds, Oxford, Edinburgh, Manchester, and University College, London. Between 1970 and 2009, about 0.33 inch more rain fell than between 1930 and1969.These_changes may be connected by humidity(湿度), Changnon says. Humidity is the measure of how much moisture is in the air. And among plants, soybeans (大豆) and corn plants release a lot of moisture. The researchers studied a vastarea in the region. They found that in 1930, farmers in that region irrigated only about 1.8 million acres of farmland. In 1980, however, farmers irrigated nearly 15 million acres. Plants use the water and then release it into the air. These results by Changnon and Robock and their colleagues are the first step toward understanding a change in the weather. 20.What does the underlined term “These changes” refer to? A.Lower temperatures and more rainfall. B.Higher temperatures and higher humidity. C.Making a record both in the past and now. D.The two periods of the 40-year investigation. 21.Which of the following could be the possible sources for the increased moisture in the US Midwest? A.Scientists' research and farmers' attention. You roll over, smiling as you come across a swimming pool filled with chocolate. And then, your wonderful dreambecomes a nightmare(噩梦) when someone is screaming, “Get up!” It's just what every teenager goes through each morning! Now, there seems to be one school that finally understands that requiring teens to show up at 9 am is not just cruel but also harmful to both the kids and the school.Monkseaton High School in North Tyneside, Britain, recently decided to experiment to see if there is any difference in student behavior if they just pushed back the start of their day by one hour, from 9 am to 10 am. And the results are surprising.Since carrying out the later start, Monkseaton has seen a 28% drop in truancy,_even hardly any lateness, and best of all, higher test scores. One of the reasons is that the teenagers are much happier to have the extra hour of sleep, but there is also a scientific reason behind why they need the extra sleep. The school's decision to push back the time was based on the research done by Oxford Professor Russell Foster, who pointed out that teenagers and adults have different sleep cycles, explaining why teenagers go to bed late and wake up late. While adults are wide awake and ready at 8 am, teenagers are not fully awake until 10 am, sometimes even noon. Teachers may argue that their students perform better in the morning, but in fact, it is because they are in the zone while their students are still sleepy, making the students easier to control.Memory tests prove that the more difficult classes should be in the afternoon when teenagers are most wide awake. The Monkseaton school officials are encouraged by the results and plan on voting to make it a permanent change.36.What's the meaning of the underlined word “truancy”?A.Grades.
