National parks boom during the summer, but many visitors barely see them, says James

Kaiser, author of the guidebook series Complete Guide to the National Parks.. “ At national parks,

you get out of them what you put into them. Once you step off the beaten path, you get an entirely

different view," Kaiser says. He shares some favorite park outings with us.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii

Even if Kilauea, the world’s most active volcano, isn’t erupting when you visit the Big Island,

you can still see the strange lava-carved (熔岩雕刻的) landscape. The 3-mile round-trip Pu’u

Huluhulu hike crosses former lava flows and passes lava trees, formed when the 1,200-degree lava

covered the trees. 808-985-6000; /havo.

Acadia National Park, Maine

For a different view, tour this popular oceanfront park by boat. Water ways pass shoreline,

lighthouses and wildlife. “There are locations sheltered by offshore islands, so the seas aren’t as

rough. Level of ability is really not a problem,” Kaiser says. 207-288-3338; /acad.

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming and Montana

One of the best ways to experience the nation's first national park is on two wheels,Kaiser

says.Although traffic's heavy during summer season, there are several areas reserved just for cyclists.Kaiser recommends coming in the early spring,though, when the park is closed to cars,giving cyclists free rein(完全的行动自由)."It's a great way to see wildlife,"he says.307-344-7381;

/yell.

Glacier National Park

This park has 700 miles of paths and three dozen icebergs. Combine the two with the

7.8-mile round-trip hike to Grinnell Glacier from Josephine Lake, featuring some of "the most

impressive mountain scenery in North America" Kaiser says. Be warned, though, the path is often

blocked by snow until late July. 406-88-7800; /glac
