(时间: 100 分钟;满分: 120 分)

Ⅰ .阅读理解 (共 15 小题;每题 2 分,满分 30 分)

A

Last night I was driving from Harrisburg to Lewisburg ,a distance

of about eighty miles. It was late.Several times I got stuck behind a slow-moving truck on a narrow road with a solid white line on my left ,and I

became increasingly impatient.

At one point along an open road,I came to a crossing with a

traffic light.I was alone on the road by now ,but as I drove near the

light ,it turned red and I made a stop.I looked left , right and behind

me.Nothing.Not a car,no suggestion of car lamps, but there I sat, waiting for the light to change ,the only human being for at least a mile

in any direction.

I started wondering why I refused to run the light.I was not afraid of

being caught, because there was clearly no policeman around, and

there certainly would have been no danger in going through it.

Much later that night ,the question of why I'd stopped for that light

came back to me.I think I stopped because it's part of a contract (契约 ) we

all have with each other. It's not only the law,but it's an agreement we

have, and we trust each other to honor it: we don't go through red lights.

Trust is our first inclination ( 偏向 ).Doubting others does not seem

to be natural to us.The whole construction of our society depends on 牛津译林版高中英语必修五模块综合测评1 2 / 22

mutual(互相 ) trust,not distrust.We do what we say we'll do;we show

up when we say we'll show up; and we pay when we say we'll pay.We

trust each other in these matters, and we're angry or disappointed with

the person or organization that breaks the trust we have in them.

I was so proud of myself for stopping for the red light that night.

chimpanzee

Most people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mother

Nature agree? Animals can't talk, but can they lie in other ways? Can

they lie with their bodies and behavior? Animal experts may not call it

lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees, behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why? Dishonesty often helps

them survive.

example,a bird called the plover sometimes pretends to be hurt in order

to protect its young. When a predator(猎食动物 )gets close to its nest, the

plover leads the predator away from the nest. How? It pretends to have a

broken wing. The predator follows the ,“leavinghurt”theadultbaby birds

safe in the nest.

Another kind of bird ,the scrub jay, buries its food so it always

has something to eat.Scrub jays are also thieves. They watch where

others bury their food and steal it.But clever scrub jays seem to know

when a thief is watching them.So they go back later, unbury the food, and bury it again somewhere else.

,they get into other birds' nests secretly. Then they lay their eggs

and fly away. When the baby birds come out, their adoptive parents feed

them.

Chimpanzees,or chimps,can also be sneaky.After a fight,the losing 牛津译林版高中英语必修五模块综合测评1 4 / 22

chimp will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimp puts out its

hand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw

a losing chimp take the winner's hand and start fighting again.

Chimps are sneaky in other ways, too. When chimps find food that

they love, such as bananas,it is natural for them to cry out. Then other

chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly

when they find food. That way ,other chimps don't hear them, and they

don't need to share their food.

As children, many of us learn the saying “Youcan't fool Mother

Nature. ” But maybe you can't trust,heither.

A .getting closer to its young

B.driving away the adult predator

C.leaving its young in another nest

D.pretending to be injured

6.By “Chimpanzees,or chimps,can also be sneaky” (Paragraph

5 ), the author means .
