COMING TO AMERICA
While most members of The University of Iowa and Iowa City communities are aware of the presence of international students, it is likely relatively few have thought about the challenges and surprises faced by those who have come here from abroad. As the University seeks to increase international understanding and create a welcoming and supportive climate for international students, we can all gain by hearing the stories of the experience of transition to a new culture and way of life. This essay contest provided a chance for international students to share what they have discovered in Coming to America. International students were invited to tell of their experiences of coming to the U.S.—the high points, low points, pleasant and non-so pleasant surprises, disappointments, unexpected successes, frustrating and positive encounters. By reading these essays, we can gain a better knowledge of what it is like to suddenly be a foreigner in a Midwestern university town. The contest was open to any international student attending The University of Iowa on a nonimmigrant visa. Sixteen students submitted essays. These students comprised a good cross-section of the UI international student community, with both undergraduate and graduate students participating, representing ten countries and with majors covering the range from actuarial science to psychology; public health to second language acquisition. The difficult job of judging these essays was graciously done a committee consisting of Lois Gray (International Programs, chair), Sally Erickson (Admissions), Lia Plakans (English as a Second Language) and Michel Pontarelli (Office of International Students and Scholars). They took on a challenging task with dedication, professionalism, and a strong interest in helping international student voices be heard. All essays, whether they received an award or not, have something important to say, and all deserve to be read and valued. Questions about the essay contest may be addressed to Scott E. King, Director of the Office of International Students and Scholars at 319-335-0335 or via e-mail at scott-king@uiowa.edu. The 2006 Coming to America Essay Contest
