Unit 2 The Olympic Games李仕才***阅读理解“It's a big hammer to crack a nut.” This is how one angry parent described the recent crackdown(严厉的打击) by London police on parents who drop their kids off at school by car.Yes,you read that correctly-the very mode of transportation that many American schools insist is the only safe way to deliver kids to school is now considered illegal in the UK.The decision to fine any vehicles seen dropping off or picking up kids within a particular zone of east London comes from city councilors'(议员) longterm efforts to make the area safer and less crowded. They say they've been trying for years “to encourage reasonable parking”,but in vain.Neighborhood residents complain frequently about their driveways being blocked by illegally parked cars for 15 minutes or more, often while they're trying to get to work, and the streets are long overcrowded. Now the rules have changed. Some parents are angry.Angie is a mother who made the “big hammer” comment and says the crackdown is “way over the top”.The nearest dropoff point for her sixyearold is now a fiveminute walk from the school.Others are happy with the decision, severe though it may seem.Councilor Jason Frost said:“Traffic has been clearly reduced, and more children are now walking to school, which is a great outcome.I would rather have complaints that we are slightly inconveniencing parents than hear that a child had been seriously injured because nothing was done.”I witness daily the chaos(混乱)created by these intown drivers, when I walk my own kids to school. There's a parking lot crowded with vehicles and a slowmoving train of cars moving in circles, many filling the air with harmful smoke.Meanwhile, the conversations around overweight children and the importance of daily physical activities continue to stand out in schools.1.Why is Angie opposed to the new rule?A.She is often fined by London police.B.She will lose her job as a school driver.C.She has adapted to the American practice.D.She thinks it adds inconvenience to her kid.2.Why has the new rule been made according to Jason Frost?A.On account of many complaints.B.Because of students' health problem.C.Owing to safety concern.D.Due to air pollution.3.What can be seen after the crackdown is carried out?A.Less daily chaos.B.Support from all people.C.More overweight children.D.Complaints from neighbors.4.What is the main idea of the text?A.Parents attempt to resist a school rule.B.London police cause widespread anger.C.American schools care more about kids' safety.D.Different voices are heard on a new traffic policy.【解题导语】本文讲述伦敦自实行在学校门口严禁停车这一做法以来的变化。

The Olympic Games李仕才【阅读理解插花】Vitamin B could help reduce the effects of the most dangerous type of air pollution, according to a new study published on Monday. In the first study of its kind, a team of international researchers looked into the damage caused by one of the pollutants that have the severest impact on health—PM 2. 5.They found that Vitamin B supplement could effectively reduce the impact of the tiny particles(颗粒)on the human body, although they stressed that the research was in its early s tages. According to the WHO, 92% of the world’s people are living in places where the PM 2. 5 level goes beyond the recommended level. So it’s urgent to find a solution to the problem.According to this study, published in the PNAS, 10 volunteers were initially exposed to clean air and given a placebo(安慰剂)to check their baseline responses. The group then kept on taking placebos for four weeks before being exposed to heavily polluted air from downtown Toronto, where an estimated 1, 000 cars passed every hour. The bad air was delivered to the volunteers through an “oxygen type” face mask. The experiment was then repeated, with each volunteer taking a Vitamin B supplement daily, made up of 2. 5 mg of folic acid, 50 mg of Vitamin B6, and 1 mg of Vitamin B12.Vitamin B6 can be found in liver, chicken, nuts and other things, and Vitamin B12 in fish, meat, eggs, milk and some cereals. The researchers found that four weeks of Vitamin B supplements reduced the damage of PM 2. 5 effects by 28-76%. The results emphasized how prevention at an individual level could be used to fight against the damage of PM 2. 5, the researchers said.【文章大意】本文主要通过一些实验告诉我们维生素B对减轻PM 2. 5对身体的伤害有什么样的功效。

It was a vision of a place where children and parents could have fun together. The more Walt dreamed of a "magical park," the more imaginative and elaborate it became. The original plans for the park were on 8 acres next to the Burbank studios where his employees and families could go to relax. Although, World War II put those plans on hold. During the war, Disney had time to come up with new ideas, and creations for his magical park. It was soon clear that 8 acres wouldn't be enough. Finally in 1953, he had the Stanford Research Institute conduct a survey for a 100-acre site, outside of Los Angeles. He needed space to build rivers, waterfalls, and mountains; he would have flying elephants and giant teacups; a fairy-tale castle, moon rockets, and a scenic railway; all inside a magic kingdom he called "Disneyland."The search for the best venue for the park ended in the rural Anaheim, California with a purchase of a 160-acre orange grove near the junction of the Santa Ana Freeway (I-5) and Harbor Boulevard.Construction for Disneyland began on July 21, 1954, 12 months before the park was scheduledto open. Some 160-acres of citrus trees had been cleared and 15 houses moved to make room for the park. However, when the real designing came around, Disney met with inevitable questions. How do you make believable wild animals, that aren't real? How do you make a Mississippi paddle ship? How do you go about building a huge castle in the middle of Anaheim, California? Disney asked his movie studio staff for answers. The design of Disneyland was something never done before. There would be four uniquely different theme parts: Adventure land , Frontier land , Fantasyland Tomorrow land. Bit by bit, Disneyland got ready for Opening Day. The staff worked around the clock to get ready. But opening day was a terrible disaster. Beside the terrible opening day conditions, the park did eventually pick up. Enter the Red Hat Society -a group holding the belief that old ladies should have fun.“My grandmothers didn’t do anything but keep house and serve everybody. They were programmed to do that,” said Emily Cornette, head of a chapter of the 7-year-old Red Hat Society. While men have long spent their time fishing and playing golf, women have sometimes seemed to become unnoticed as they age. But the generation now turning 50 is the baby boomers, and the same people who refused their parents’ way of being young are now trying a new way of growing old.If you take into consideration feminism(女权主义), a bit of spare money, and better health for most elderly, the Red Hat Society looks almost inevitable(必然的). In this society, women over 50wear red hats and purple clothes, while the women under 50 wear pink hats and light purple clothing.“The organization took the idea from a poem by Jenny Joseph that begins: “When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple. With a red hat which doesn’t go,” said Ellen Cooper, who founded the Red Hat Society in 1998. When the ladies started to wear the red hats, they attracted lots of attention.“The point of this is that we need a rest from always doing something for someone else,” Cooper said. “Women feel so ashamed and sorry when they do something for themselves.” This is why chapters are discouraged from raising money or doing anything useful. “We’re a ladies’ play group. It couldn’t be more simple,” added Cooper’s assistant Joe Heywood.61.The underlined word “chapter” in paragraph 2 means __________.A.one branch of an organization B.a written agreement of a clubC.one part of a collection of poems D.a period in a society’s history of the baby boomers 62.The “baby boomers” are a group of people whoA.have gradually become more noticeableB.tried living a different life from their parents when they were youngC.are worried about getting old too quicklyD.are enjoying a good life with plenty of money to spend63.We can infer from the text that .A.members of the Red Hat Society are interested in raising money for social workB.members of the Red Hat Society are programmers who can plan well for their futureC.members of the Red Hat Society believers in equality between men and womenD.members of the Red Hat Society are good at cooking big meals and taking care of others 64.Who set up the Red Hat Society ?A.Emily Cornette . It has reduced automobile crashes on some roads by nearly 75 percent using a simple optical illusion. But stripes, called chevrons(人字形), painted on the roads make drivers think that they are driving faster than they really are, and thus drivers slow down. Now the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety in Washington D.C. is planning to repeat Japan’s success. Starting next year, the foundation will paint chevrons and other patterns of stripes on selected roads around the country to test how well the patterns reduce highway crashes.Excessive (too great) speed plays a major role in as much as one fifth of all fatal traffic accidents, according to the foundation. To help reduce those accidents, the foundation will conduct its tests in areas where speed-related hazards (danger) are the greatest curves, exit slopes, traffic circles, and bridges. Some studies suggest that straight, horizontal bars painted across roads can initially cut the average speed of drivers in half. However, traffic often returns to full speed within months as drivers become used to seeing the painted bars.Chevrons, scientists say, not only give drivers the impression that they are driving faster than they really are but also make a lane appear to be narrower. The result is a longer lasting reduction in highway speed and the number of traffic accidents.66. On roads painted with chevrons, drivers tend to feel that ________.A. they should avoid driving fast.B. they are driving in the wrong laneC. they should slow down their speedD. they are coming near to the speed limit67. The advantage of chevrons over straight, horizontal bars is that the former ________.A. can keep drivers awakeB. can cut road accidents in halfC. will look more attractiveD. will have a longer effect on drivers68. What does the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety do?A. change the road signs across the countryB. try out the Japanese method in certain areasC. replace straight, horizontal bars with chevronsD. repeat the Japanese road patterns69. What of the following is true about straight, horizontal bars painted across roads?A. They are suitable only on broad roads.B. They are falling out of use in the United States.C. They cannot be used successfully to traffic circles.D. They are ignored in a long period of time.70.
