陆九龄，字子寿。父贺，以学行为里人所宗，生六子，九龄其第五子也。幼颖悟端重，十岁丧母，哀毁如成人。稍长，补郡学弟子员。

时秦桧当国，无道程氏学者，九龄独尊其说。久之，闻新博士学黄、老，不事礼法，慨然叹曰：“此非吾所愿学也。”遂归家，从父兄讲学益力。是时，吏部员外郎许忻有名中朝，退居临川，少所宾接，一见九龄，与语大说，尽以当代文献告之。自是九龄益大肆力于学，翻阅百家，昼夜不倦，悉通阴阳、星历、五行、卜筮之说。
