My own children's school week is framed by pretests, drills, tests, and retests. They know that the best way to read a textbook is to look at the questions at the end of the chapter and then skim the text for the answers. I believe that my daughter Erica, who gets excellent marks, has never read a chapter of any of her school textbooks all the way through. And teachers are often heard to state proudly and openly that they teach to the mandated (训令的) state test.Teaching to the test is a curious phenomenon. Instead of deciding what skills students ought to learn, helping students learn them, and then using somesensible methods of assessment to discover whether students have mastered the skills, teachers are encouraged to reverse the process. First one looks at a commercially available test. Then one distills (去除) the skills needed not to master reading, say, or math, but to do well on the test. Finally, the test skills are taught. The ability to read or write or calculate might imply the ability to do reasonably well on standardized tests. However, neither reading nor writing develops simply through being taught to take tests. We must be careful to avoid mistaking preparation for a test of a skill with the acquisition of that skill. Too many discussions of basic skills make this fundamental confusion because people are test obsessed rather than concerned with the nature and quality of what is taught.Recently many schools have faced what could be called the crisis of comprehension or, in simple terms, the phenomenon of students with phonic and grammar skills still being unable to understand what they read. These students are competent at test-taking and filling in workbooks. However they have little or no experience reading or thinking, and talking about what they read. They know the details but can't see or understand the whole. They are taught to be so concerned with grade that they have no time or ease of mind to think about meaning and reread things if necessary.1.The author gives an account of Erica's performance in her study in order to________.A. illustrate her cleverness in test-takingB. reveal the incompetence of teachersC. show there is something wrong with current practice in teachingD. demonstrate the best way to read textbooks2. Which of the following is true according to the passage?A. The phenomenon of teaching to the test has aroused curiosity in manyeducators.B. Skills in general are not only useless but often lead students astray.C. Ability to read and write is one thing and ability to do well onstandardized tests is quite another.D. Preparation for a test of a skill does not necessarily mean the acquisitionof that skill.3. The author insists that ___________.A. mandated state tests be replaced by some more sensible methods ofassessmentB. teachers pay more attention to the nature and quality of what is taughtC. students not be concerned with grades but do more reading and thinkingD. Radical changes be brought about in the general approach to teaching4. We can safely conclude that __________ may cause educational problems.A. test obsessionB. standardized testsC. test-takingD. preparation for mandated state tests5. By "crisis of comprehension" the author means many students____________.A. are too much concerned with gradesB. lack proper practice in phonic and grammar drillC. fail to understand the real goal of educationD. are unable to understand what they read, though they do reasonably wellon standardized testsPassage 2Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:In the second half of each year, many powerful storms are born in the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean seas. Of these, only about half a dozen generate the strong, circling winds of 75miles per hour or more that give them hurricane (飓风) status, and several usually make their way to the coast. There they cause millions of dollars of damage, and bring death to large numbers of people. The great storms that hit the coast start as harmless circling disturbances hundreds—even thousands—of miles out to sea. As they travel aimlessly over water warmed by the summer sun, they are carried westward by the trade winds (信风). When conditions are just right, warm, moist air flows in at the bottom of such a disturbance, moves upward through it and comes out at the top. In the process, the moisture in this warm air produces rain and with it the heat that is converted to energy in the form of strong winds. As the heat increases, the young hurricane begins to swirl (旋转) in a counter-clock-wise motion. The average life of a hurricane is only about nine days, but it contains almost more power than we can imagine. The energy in the heat released by a hurricane’s rainfall in a single day would satisfy the entire electrical needs of the United States for more than six months. Water, not wind, is the main source of death and destruction in a hurricane. A typical hurricane brings 6- to 12-inchdownpours resulting in sudden floods. Worst of all is the powerful movement of the sea—the mountains of water moving toward the low-pressure hurricane center. The water level rises as much as 15 feet above normal as it moves toward shore.6. When is an ordinary tropical storm called a hurricane?A. When it begins in the Atlantic and Caribbean seas.B. When it hits the coastline.C. When its winds reach 75 miles wide.D. When it is more than 75 miles wide.7. What is the worst thing about hurricanes?A. The destructive effects of water they cause.B. The heat they release.C. The time they last.D. The strong winds they produce.8. The counter-clockwise swirling of the hurricane is brought about by ______.A.T he low-pressure area in the center of the storm.B.T he force of waves of water.C.T he trade winds.D.T he increasing heat.9. Apparently the word “downpour” in t he last paragraph means ________.A. Heavy rainfallB. Dangerous wavesC. The progress of water to the hurricane centerD. The energy produced by the hurricane10. The best title for the passage would be ________.A. Hurricane — the Most Destructive Form of Natural DisastersB. Hurricane — a New Form of EnergyC. The Cause and Effect of HurricaneD. The Average Life of a HurricanePassage 3Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:Few people doubt the fundamental importance of mothers in child-rearing, but what do fathers do? Much of what they contribute is simply the result of being a second adult in the home. Bringing up children is demanding, stressful and exhausting. Two adults can support and make up for each other’sweaknesse s and build on each other’s strengths.Fathers also bring an array of unique qualities. Some are familiar: protector and role model. Teenage boys without fathers are prone to trouble. The pathway to adulthood for daughters is somewhat easier, but they must still learn from their fathers, in ways they cannot from their mothers, how to relate to men. Most important, through loving and being loved by their fathers, they learn that they are love-worthy.Current research gives much deeper insight into the fathe r’s role in child-rearing. One significantly overlooked aspect of fathering is play. From their children’s birth through adolescence, fathers tend to emphasize play more than care-taking. The father’s style of play is likely to be both physically stimulating and exciting. With older children it involves more teamwork, requiring competitive testing of physical and mental skills. It frequently resembles a teaching relationship: come on, let me show you how. Mothers play more at the child’s level. They seem wi lling to let the child direct play.At play and in other realms, fathers tend to stress competition, challenge, initiative, risk-taking and independence. Mothers, as caretakers, stress emotional security and personal safety. On the playground fathers often try to get the child to swing ever higher, while mothers are cautious, worrying about an accident. We know, too, that fathers’ involvement seems to be linked to improved verbal and problem-solving skills and higher academic achievement. Several studies found that along with paternal strictness, the amount of time fathers spent reading with them was a strong predictor of their daughters’ verbal ability. For sons the results have been equally striking. Studies uncovered a strong relationship between fathers’involvement and the mathematical abilities of their sons. Other studies found a relationship between paternal nurturing and boys’ verbal intelligence.11. The first paragraph points out that one of the advantages of a family withboth parents is ___________.A.husband and wife can share houseworkB.two adults are always better than oneC.the fundamental importance of mothers can be fully recognizedD.husband and wife can compensate for each other’s shortcomings12. According to paragraph 3, one significant differ ence between the father’sand mother’s role in child-rearing is _________.A.the style of play encouragedB.the amount of time spentC.the strength of emotional tiesD.the emphasis of intellectual development13. Which of the following statements is true?A.Mothers tend to stress personal safety less than fathers.B.Boys are likely to benefit more from their fathers’ caring.C.Girls learn to read more quickly with the help of their fathers.D.Fathers tend to encourage creativeness and independence.14.
