Comments on The Importance of Being Earnest The Importance of Being Earnest is a play by Oscar Wilde.
It is a farcical comedy. The protagonists maintain imaginary personae in order to escape burdensome obligations. The play's major themes are the triviality with which it treats institutions as serious as marriage, and the resulting satire of Victorian ways.
Earnest is not only a name, but also a kind of character. Two ignorant young ladies fell in love with two men who were both named “Ernest”, even though they didn’t know their background. Two adult men asked the priest to change their name just for the girls they loved for a short while. It seems that two ladies are only care about whether two men are named Ernest. And Lady Bracknell , Gwendolen’s mother, only cares about whether Jack is noble and wealthy enough to marry her daughter. As far as I am concerned, it sounds ridiculous. How sincere they were! Though it is a farcical comedy, I don’t know the reason why I can’t laugh at it. However, it is the way that Wilde expresses his opinions. Luckily, the coincidence of ending makes the most impossible reunion possible.
The dramatic works of Wilde gain a lot of admires because
of the complicated plots, lively characters, humorous language. His wonderful words, aphorism and paradox add new vitality to
plays because they reflect social issues. We can’t know Wilde’s world through only one play. To know more, we should learn more about his works and be absorbed in his world.。
