Once in Arabia, there lived a Sheik. He and his wife lived in a village. As she had no child, the Sheik married another woman for a second time. By his second wife, he had a son. He loved his son very much and he grew up happily as a handsome young man.

However, the man's first wife hated the second wife and her son, so she began to plot against(密谋杀害) them. For years, she kept waiting for a chance to murder them with her magical power.

One day the Sheik had to go out on a journey. He said to his son that he would return home before Bakrid and celebrated the festival. Now came the perfect chance long waited by the first wife. When the man was away, she used her magical power and changed the second wife and son as goats.

When Bakrid was approaching, the man returned home, only to find his first wife in the house. He asked her where his son and his second wife were. The first wife lied that his second wife died in some unknown disease and that her son ran away from home and didn't come again. On hearing this, the man became sad but comforted himself that it was God's will.

On the day of Bakrid, the Sheik asked his first wife to bring a goat for sacrifice. His first wife brought the second wife who had been changed into a goat. When it came near the man, it started to brush his hand with its tongue. He took pity on the goat and asked his first wife to bring another. So she brought the son goat. It also come near the Sheik and started to rub his leg with its head. Again, the man took pity on the goat. He said, "The two goats do like men. So I can't kill these two. " Then the first wife got angry and said, "If you refuse to kill all goats like this, we will not be able to sacrifice anything." Possible Version 1 Paragraph 1: Just then the butcher's wife, another woman with magical power, passed by. Glancing at these two goats, she instantly realized the woman's evil trick. She came up to the Sheik, explaining, "Actually, these two goats are your second wife and your son." Hearing the words, the man was startled and asked her if she could bring them back to him. The butcher's wife nodded, taking some water from her bottle and spraying it on the two goats. The next moment, they turned into his second wife and his son.

Paragraph 2: So astonished was the man that he couldn't believe his eyes. "Dad! Dad!" the boy cried in a thrilled

voice, throwing himself at his father's hug. Three of them embraced each other tightly, tears streaming down. In the corner stood the first wife in a mixture of fright and annoyance. When she was about to run away, she was caught by the butcher's wife. Never had she predicted one day she would be changed into a silent fish. From then on, the man, his second wife and his lovable son lived a happy life in the village.

Possible Version 2

Paragraph 1: Just then the butcher's wife, another woman with magical power, passed by.The sight of the goats pacing around Sheik with care and love confused the butcher's wife, wondering why two goats acted like humans. With doubt in mind, she approached the two goats, hands gently on their heads to know what had happened. It dawned on her that the two goats were actually changed from humans through magical

power. Having learnt the truth, the woman changed the two back to humans, making everyone present shocked, including Sheik.

Paragraph 2: So astonished was the man that he couldn't believe his eyes. Never in his wildest dream had he thought they would reunite in this way. Tears of relief welling up in eyes, he hugged them tightly, asking what they had experienced. Eyes glued to the three, the first wife, with her hands clenched into tight fists, dashed to them in a flash, scolding and cursing. Sheik glared at her, realizing the truth and revealed her evil deeds on the spot. Furious but frightened by the roaring people around, the first wife fled away, leaving the family in the joyful celebration.

Shana, Robyn, and I stood on the high platform near the tops of the rainforest trees. We were wearing heavy helmets on our heads and had thick leather straps around our waists, which made seats that hung from a thick wire overhead. The wire was hung between the platform we stood on and another platform far in the distance.

This was the zip line(滑索), an adventure I had vowed I would not do on our family trip to Costa Rica. I was afraid of heights, afraid of falling, and afraid of zipping through the air above the rainforest at 30 miles per hour. Yet here I was, fastened in and ready to go.

"Who goes first?" our guide asked. My sisters exchanged a glance- neither of them stepped forward. I'd been teased for being a "scary cat" ever since I was four when I tripped (绊倒) and fell on an escalator (自动扶梯). Even my parents, while relieved by my cautious ways, were worried that I'd miss out on(错过) enjoyable activities. No longer willing to let life pass me by, I stepped to the edge of the platform, sat back in the leather seat, and pushed off(离开).Absolute terror filled me as I screamed and zoomed through the trees with my eyes squeezed shut. Before I could totally process what was happening, I landed safely on the second platform.

As my sisters flew in behind me, the guide attached me to the next wire, and I was off again. This time, fear was replaced with excitement, and I was able to look around me as I zipped. There- a toucan (犀鸟)! And

was that a sloth (树懒) right at eye level? By the time we had finished all the zip line journeys, I was shouting not with terror but with joy. And to think how close I'd come to missing it all!

For many months he had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealer's showroom, and knowing his father could well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted. As Graduation Day approached, the young man awaited signs that his father had purchased the car. Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his private study. His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him. He handed his son a beautiful wrapped gift box. Curiously, but somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible, with the young man's name embossed in gold. Angrily, he raised his voice to his father and said, "With all your money you give me a Bible?" Then stormed out of the house, leaving the Bible. Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had a beautiful home and a wonderful family, but realizing his father was very old, he thought perhaps he should go to see him. He had not seen him since that graduation day. Before he could make the arrangements, he received a telegram telling him his father had passed away, and willed all of his possessions to his son. He needed to come home immediately and take care of things. When he arrived at his father's house, sudden sadness and regret filled his heart. He began to search through his father's important papers and saw the still new Bible, just as he had left it years ago. With tears, he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages. As he was reading, a car key dropped from the back of the Bible. It had a tag with the dealer's name, the same dealer who had the sports car he had desired. On the tag was the date of his graduation, and the words... "PAID IN FULL". How many times do we miss blessings because they are not packaged as we expected? I trust you enjoyed this.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is gaining global popularity. According to a government white paper, TCM has been introduced in 183 countries and regions around the world. Westerners' understanding of TCM, however, may be limited to acupuncture, cupping and massage(针灸,拔罐和按摩). For instance, the purple, injury-like marks left on U. S. swimmer Michael Phelps, back from cupping for the purpose of relaxing his muscles and reducing pain became the center of attention during the Rio Olympics in 2016. As a matter of fact, Chinese herbs play a more important role in getting rid of diseases and keeping the body in good condition in the TCM treatment system than physical treatment. It is therefore disheartening to know that while 103 World Health Organization member countries have given approval to the practice of acupuncture, not many recognize Chinese herbal medicine. TCM falls far behind Western medicine owing partly to the slow development of Chinese herbs. Herbs are made into pills, powder and soup, and the kind of herbs used, their quality and quantity, and the processing of the ingredients (原材料) jointly determine the effectiveness of the prescription. Compared with Western medicine, which has standardized drug production processes and treatment methods, TCM lacks standardization, with the chemical composition and functions of its medicines being unclear and their effects being unstable. Fortunately, standardization has improved in recent decades, with an increasing number of factories producing patented TCM drugs. Another factor that has prevented the development of TCM prescription drugs is the lack of creativity. While Western medicine-making companies come up with new products every year, TCM drug producers tend to make medicines according to prescriptions handed down from the past. Chinese chemist Tu Youyou's winning the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her research into malaria (疟疾) treatment may drive creativity to some extent in China's TCM industry. However, the current state of affairs cannot be changed within a short time. (1)Why does the author mention the example of Michael Phelps? A. Because he was injured in his swimming. B. Because cupping is a kind of important TCM treatment. C. Because westerners know a little about TCM. D. Because westerners attach great importance to TCM. (2)Why don't some member countries of WHO recognize Chinese herbal medicine? A. Because Chinese herbs can get rid of diseases. B. Because they only approve the practice of acupuncture. C. Because Western medicine is more effective. D. Because medicine made out of Chinese herbs develops slowly. (3)Compared with Western medicine, what is the weak point of TCM in Paragraph 4? A. The methods of planting herbs. B. The effectiveness of prescription. C. Lacking in standardization. D. Its stable functions.

For me, I did not have money and my parents limited my pocket money, so I couldn’t spend the money to buy whatever I wanted. It seems to me that being an adult is my only wish. Some day, I learned from the movie that being an adult was not that as perfect as I thought. In the movie, the man struggled to earn money to pay his bills, what’s more, he had to stay away from his family. Loneliness was always around him. To be independent means we can live our own way and make our own decision. We have more freedom. But at the same time, it also means more annoyance. So why just we enjoy this moment. Score and Ability In China, the students have to take part in many exams, they need to get the high mark, so that they can enter the better school and have more chances to get to the college. I was born on the 17th of November 1828, in the village of Nam Ping, which is about four miles southwest of the Portuguese Colony (殖民地) of Macao, and is located on Pedro Island lying west of Macao, from which it is separated by a channel of half a mile wide. As early as 1834, an English lady, Mrs. Gutzlaff, wife of a missionary to China, came to Macao. Supported by the Ladies' Association in London for the promotion of female education in India and the East, she immediately took up the work of starting a girls' school for Chinese girls, which was soon followed by the opening of a boys' school. Mrs. Gutzlaff's comprador(买办) happened to come from my village and was actually my father's friend and neighbor. It was through him that my parents heard about Mrs. Gutzlaff's school and it was doubtlessly through his influence and means that my father got me admitted into the school. It has always been a mystery to me why my parents should put me into a foreign school, instead of a traditional Confucian school, where my big brother was placed. Most certainly such a step would have been more suitable for Chinese public opinion, taste, and the wants of the country, than to allow me to attend an English school. Moreover, a Chinese belief is the only avenue in China that leads to political promotion, influence, power and wealth. I can only guess that as foreign communication with China was just beginning to grow, my parents hoped that it might be worthwhile to put one of their sons to learning English. In this way he might become an interpreter and have a more advantageous position to enter the business and diplomatic world. I am wondering if that influenced my parents to put me into Mrs. Gutzlaff's School. As to what other sequences it has eventually brought about in my later life, they were entirely left in the hands of God. (1)How was the author admitted to Mrs. Gutzlaff's school? A. Through his father's friend's help. B. Through his own efforts to exams. C. Through his father's request. D. Through Mrs. Gutzlaff's influence. (2)Why did the author's parents put him into an English school? A. An English school was more influential. B. Foreign trade with China was developing fast. C. It met with Chinese public opinion. D. He could become a successful interpreter. (3)What did the author think of his parents' decision to put him into an English school? A. It was skeptical. B. It was mysterious. C. It was thoughtful. Gutzlaff's comprador(买办) happened to come from my village and was actually my father's friend and neighbor. It was through him that my parents heard about Mrs. Gutzlaff's school”可知,作者是通过父亲朋友的帮助进入到Mrs.

The Two Roads 两条路 It was New Year's Night. An aged man was s tanding at a window. He had already passed sixty of the stages leading to it, and he had brought from his jou rney nothing but errors and remorse. The days of his youth appeared like dreams before him, and he recalled the serious moment when his father place d him at the entrance of the two roads-one le ading to a peaceful, sunny place, covered with flowers, fruits and resounding with soft, sweet songs;the other leading to a deep, dark cave, which was endless. He looked towards the sky and cried painfully, ″O youth, return!O my father, place me once more at the entrance to life, and I'l l choose the better way!″But both his father and the days of his youth had passed away. The clock in the high church tower struck and the sound made him remember his parents' early love for him. They had taught him and prayed to God for his good. But he chose the wrong way. Hi s darkened eyes were full of tears, and with a despairing effort, h e burst out a c ry: ″Come back, my early days!Come back!″ And his youth did return, for all this was only a dream which he had on New Year's Night. Those who still linger on the entrance of life, hesitating to choose the bright road, remember that when years are passed and your feet stumble on the dark mountains, you will cry bitterly, but in vain: ″O youth, return!Oh give me back my early days!″ .
