As Solomon’s study finds, there is a positive correlation between students’ achievement and the clarity of language that teachers use (Huang Xiting, 1997: 480). As noted by Carl Rogers, to know the secret world of the people, just as we were present there (Huang Xiting, 1997: 440). Psychological research shows that if students are forced to learn, it is hard for them to keep what they have learnt in mind (Plato, 1958: 42). Johann Amos Comenius, a Czech educator, once said that all knowledge begins with sense (1984: 12).The thesis mainly advises middle school English teachers to get rid of the old pattern of exam-oriented education in teaching the new English textbooks and promote the strategy of effective leading-ins. It puts forward four principles of effective lead-ins (pertinent, inspiring, interesting and artistic) and five strategies of effective lead-ins (free talk and speech lead-in, story lead-in, music appreciation lead-in, movie lead-in, current affairs and news lead-in) and some points that need attention in classroom lead-ins (Make sure not to lead in for too long, n ever conduct “one size fits all” lead-ins, never ignore the effectiveness of lead-ins and do not forget the practice of communicative skills). In a word, there are methods in teaching but they are not confined and they are worthy of being sought. Among those methods, using effective lead-ins is undoubtedly one of the most important ones. As a result, they may enhance classroom efficiency. Moreover, they can cultivate students’ up-and-coming lofty sentiments and achieve the goal of imparting knowledge and educating people.In order to support my views, I consult a lot of teaching theories, take some English lessons in different middle schools and ask some good English learners about their experience as well as their view on how to make effective lead-ins in junior middle school English class.I believe that making a survey on how to make effective lead-ins can not only make the middle English teachers better learn and understand the reform of new English curriculum, but also make their teaching techniques creative.
