As well as temperature, humidity also plays an important role in keeping food fresh.BioFresh:For long lasting freshness and tasteThe perfect combination of temperature and humidity ensures that the taste and nutrients found in food are retained for much longer, and moisture regulation in the BioFresh compartments allows for individual settings in DrySafes orHydroSafes. DrySafes with low humidity are ideal for storing meat, fish and dairy products.Fruit and vegetables are best stored in the HydroSafe, and if this compartment is well filled it creates a dewy climate with optimal humidity. Fruit andvegetables naturally have a high water content and this must be retained during storage. Due to the high humidity in the HydroSafe, the water stays in the food, meaning it stays crisp and fresh longer. Thanks to the practical slide control, the humidity in the HydroSafe can easily be increased or decreased depending on the quantity of goods being stored.BioFresh helps to keep your food fresh and ensures efficient and time-saving storage. BioFresh technology is based on the knowledge that food lasts the longest when stored just above freezing point, and therefore the temperature in the BioFreshcompartments is constantly just above 0°C. These compartments work like freshness safes, each offering optimal conditions for different foods - and all in just one appliance. Food Cooling and freezing guideFreezing properly with innovative technologyWith the flexibly adjustable compartments, BioFresh offers optimal storage conditions for every type of food. Read on to find out what temperature and BioFresh option are best for different types of food.Freezing food not only extends its shelf life, the fresher and faster the product is frozen, the more vitamins and minerals are retained. That’s why freshly caught fish is frozen whilst it’s still on the boat.Meat and dairy productsMeat products are very sensitive when it comes to temperature and humidity, and the BioFresh DrySafe is the ideal environment. Low humidity and a temperature just above freezing point significantly reduce the activity of microorganisms and ensures an extra-long shelf life. These climatic conditions are also ideal for milk, cheese and yoghurt.Fruit and vegetablesThe high water content of fruits and vegetables means they are best stored at high humidity. The BioFreshHydroSafe creates the ideal climate - and with its precise electronics -ensures a constant temperature of just above 0°C.The ideal storage conditions not only prevent unwanted freezing of the food, they also protect against drying out and preserve the valuable vitamins and minerals as much as possible.FishFish and seafood are stored on ice at retailers and for good reason - their ideal storage temperature around the freezing point. When set to 0°C, the BioFresh Safe is suitable for storing fish, and eel, salmon and pikeperch keep even longer with BioFresh-Plus. Thanks to the individual control thetemperature in this climate zone can bereduced to exactly -2°C, andcombined with the DrySafe setting, thisensures fish stays fresh much longer. How to freeze yourholiday meal the right wayThanks to "shock freezing", even after thawing, fish stays fresher than what is sold at the fish counter in the supermarket, arriving after long transport routes. On Christmas day, people love to enjoy Christmas dinner with the family, but what to do with the leftovers? Why not freeze them? Read on to find out how to properly freeze stews, meat, sauces and soups, and what you should consider when defrosting. But unlike freezing, thawing should be done slowly and gently, preferably in the refrigerator.Read more about our innovative freezing options here.FrostSafe: Keeps the cold in the freezerEvery time the freezer is opened, the cold escapes. This not only drives up energy consumption, but leads to temperature fluctuations that affect the quality of the food inside. This is where drawers can help; thanks to the extra high and all-round closed drawers, the FrostSafe function allows significantly less cold to escape than conventional freezer drawers.SuperFrost: Freezing made easyThe SuperFrost function makes freezing quick and easy. It rapidly lowers the temperature to -32°C and creates the cold reserves needed to retain vitamins in the food. As soon as the freezing process is done, SuperFrost automatically switches back to normal operation, helping to save electricity.DuoCooling: The perfect combinationWith the DuoCooling technology, the temperature of fridge-freezer combinations can be set and controlled precisely and independently in both compartments. This function is available in appliances in which therefrigerator and freezer compartments have their own control for temperature regulation. DuoCooling prevents odours from the stored food from being transferred from the freezer to the refrigerator - and vice versa. This also prevents the goods from drying out.Prepare food carefully•Meat : a llow to cool down completely before separating into portions•Vegetables : clean, wash, chop and blanch, let cool quickly.•Frui t: wash, peel, remove the stalk, or freeze peel with or without sugar solution.Store in the correct quantities•Vegetables and fruit up to max. 1 kg per pack•Meat up to max. 3 kg per pack •Cereals up to max. 1 kg per packWhy should you defrost the freezer at all? Moisture gets into the appliance both through the stored food and through regular opening of the door. This humidity then settles in the form of ice inside the freezer and makes it difficult to pull out the drawers. Plus, this ice build-up means that more energy has to be used in order to be able to keep the temperature constant over the long term, which leads to increased energy consumption. Why is defrosting necessary ?How often should you defrost your freezer ?To minimise ice build-up and keep your freezerworking as energy efficiently as possible, it’s important to defrost the appliance once or twice a year.Depending on the humidity of the room the freezer is installed in, you may need to defrost it more frequently. Regular defrosting is crucial to ensure the appliance continues to work to its full potential in the long term .What should you do with the frozen food whilst defrosting the freezer ?Before you start defrosting your freezer, you should clear out the food you have stored. You can wrap the food in newspaper and then store it in a cool place, or you can store your food together with ice packs in the drawers of your freezer. If you have a device with the SuperFrost function, activate it 24 hours before you start the defrosting process. That way the temperature drops from the usual -18°C to the maximum cooling capacity, and you can delay the thawing process. What should you do with the frozen food whilst defrosting the freezer? Before you start defrosting your freezer, you should clear out the food you have stored. You can wrap the food in newspaper and then store it in a cool place,or you can store your food together with ice packs in the drawers of your freezer (the Liebherr cold storage accumulators are perfect for this! Visit our webshop to find out more). If you have a device with theSuperFrost function, activate it 24 hours before you start the defrosting process. That way the temperature drops from the usual -18°C to the maximum cooling capacity, and you can delay the thawing process .How to remove built up ice from the freezer when defrostingBefore you start defrosting, we recommend switching off the appliance and disconnecting it from the power. To start the defrosting process, it is best to open the door of the freezer so that the ice can slowly thaw. You can speed up this process by adding a bowl of hot water inside the appliance and keep the door closed so that the heat can begin to melt the ice more quickly. The built up ice will melt faster and you can remove the ice which has become attached to the side walls more easily. The best way to catch the condensation and excess ice is with a sponge or cloth, this will prevent too much water from getting on your floor. To ensure a fridge or freezer always runs optimally, they are categorised into climate classes. This can be found under the nameplate (usually on the inside left of the appliance) and gives information on the ambient temperature an appliance can be used in.The climate classes: what do they mean?NoFrost: no more defrostingSave time by choosing a freezer with our NoFrost technology, and make regular defrosting a thing of the past. Thanks to NoFrost technology, the frozen food is frozen with chilled circulating air and the humidity is removed. This means that the freezer compartment always remains ice-free and the food can no longer frost. The NoFrost function does this automatically so that you don't have to defrost again and again. As soon as the evaporator builds up a layer of ice, a sensor initiates the defrosting process. To do this, the fan switches off and the evaporator tubes are heated and the ice layer melts without increasing the temperature in the freezer compartment itself. The device remains ice-free and the energy consumption remains constant, and you never have to defrost again!Different appliances are suitable for different ambient temperatures. Based on the classification and labelling you can see the ideal ambient temperature your appliance can be used in.SN = Subnormal: Suitable for ambient temperatures from +10°C to +32°CN = Normal: suitable for temperatures of +16°C up to +32°CST = Subtropical: suitable for ambient temperatures from +16°C to +38°CT = Tropical: Suitable for temperatures of +16°C up to +43°CLots of people choose to have a second freezer in a garage or outbuilding, where the temperature can be lower than +10°C during the winter months. That’s why referring to climate class when choosing yourappliance is very important, to ensure it can operate correctly and energy efficiently for the lifespan of the freezer. If you have an appliance that is designed for the SN-T range, you should not use it at ambient temperatures below +10°C. This is because the viscosity of the oil in the compressor (the way in which it flows) decreases in these low temperatures. It can become viscous, meaning optimal "lubrication" is no longer guaranteed and the compressor could be damaged as a result. The exception to this is if you have purchased a freezer with our FrostProtect technology. These freezers will work in ambient temperatures as low as -15°C, such as a garage or outbuilding.
