first-principles study on the electronic structureA first-principles study on the electronic structure is a computational approach that aims to understand the behavior of electrons in a material or system based solely on fundamental physical laws and principles, without using any empirical input or assumptions. This study typically employs density functional theory (DFT) as the main theoretical framework. DFT solves the many-electron Schrödinger equation by approximating the unknown electron density rather than the wavefunction itself. Within this framework, the electronic structure is described by the electronic band structure, which provides information about the allowed energy levels (bands) for electrons in a material. In a first-principles study, the electronic structure is calculated by minimizing the total energy of the system with respect to the electron density. This involves solving the Kohn-Sham equations, which are derived from DFT and provide a self-consistent solution for the electronic structure. The resulting electronic band structure can then be used to understand various properties of the material, such as its electrical conductivity, optical properties, and magnetic behavior. To perform a first-principles study, one needs to determine the initial electron density, often done using pseudopotentials to represent the interaction between the electrons and atomic nuclei. The calculations then proceed iteratively, adjusting the electron density until self-consistency is achieved.First-principles studies on the electronic structure can provide valuable insights into the behavior of electrons in various materials and systems. They are widely used in condensed matter physics, materials science, and chemistry to investigate the properties of materials, design new materials with specific electronic properties, and understand the underlying principles that govern electron behavior.。

Dielectric and Advanced Matter Physics,Department of Physics,Pusan National University,Busan609-735(Received17February2008)Through rst-principles electronic structure calculations, the interaction between graphene andhydrogen impurities is investigated. While pure graphene has a zero band gap, hydrogen absorbedon graphene opens a band gap, which is calculated to be proportional to p ,where is the densityof hydrogens adsorbed on graphene. The adsorption energy(E A)of H is shown to slightly increaseas increases.PACS numbers:73.20.At,73.20.Hb,73.22.-fKeywords:Graphene,Hydrogen,2-dimension,Band gapI.INTRODUCTIONThere are many kinds of carbon(C)-based materi-als such as fulleren, nanotubes, nanoribbons, graphene, graphite and diamond[1{3].Graphene serves as the basic mother system of carbon-based materials, except diamond.Graphene is a single layer of graphite in a structured hexagonal system and graphite is united by graphene layers. The formation force is a Van der Waals force[4].Landau and Peierls suggested that a two-dimensional(2D)material could not exist because2D materials are thermodynamically unstable[5,6].It is suggested that the melting temperature of the material decreases when the thickness of the material decreases and that at dozens of atomic layers, the material sepa-rates into islands or decomposes[7,8].However,after graphene was found to be obtained using a procedure of micromechanical cleavage of graphite[9],graphene is now being widely investigated. While graphite is a semimetal, graphene is a semiconductor with0electronic band gap(E g).The property of a semimetal, where the valance band maximum(VBM)and the conduction band minimum(CBM)overlaps, starts from two grapene lay-ers stacked in a Bernal graphitic system[10].An interesting aspect is that near the Fermi level, graphene shows a linear dispersion of the electronic band in k-space,from which a Fermi-Dirac fermion is sug-gested to be realized in graphene. The e ective mass of an electron is very small and the speed of the electron is1300c[10].That is,graphene has a ballistic transport property.Due to the peculiar properties of graphene, graphene has become a promising candidate for applica-£E-mail:cpark@pusan.ac.kr;Fax:+82-2-515-2390tions to new technology.Several surprising phenomena have been revealed in graphene. The quantum Hall ef-fect(QHE)was measured in graphene[9,11].Recently, much researches on the usage of graphene for hydro-gen storage has been carried out, like single-wall carbon nanotubes(SWCNT)and much researches on hydrogen chemisorption on graphene exists[12,13].The adsorption of atomic hydrogen(H)on graphene was suggested to open a substantial gap[14].This indicates that the band gap of graphene may be controllable through H adsorp-tion,which may make graphene a much more promising candidate for electronic device applications. In this pa-per,we investigate the energetics of the adsorption of hydrogen on graphene and the change of the electronic structure of the graphene by the adsorption of hydrogen atoms.II.CALCULATION METHODSWe performed the rst-principles projector augmented-wave(PAW)[15]pseudopotential calcu-lations based on the density-functional theory(DFT)[16]within the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof(PBE)general-ized gradient approximation(PBE-GGA)[17]by using the VASP code[18].The wave functions were expanded in a plane-wave basis set with an energy cuto of400eV.In order to simulate graphene single layer,we seperate the graphene layers by7.38 A.The unit cell, the lattice vectors and the reciprocal k-space Brillouin zone of the simple hexagonal graphene are shown in Figure1.The calculated lattice constant is a=2.460 A.For the calculations of the structure of hydrogen atoms on the graphene, the supercell method is used and the atomic -939--940-Journal of the Korean Physical Society,Vol.54,No.2,February2009Fig.1.Schematic structures of pure graphene. The lattice vectors of real space and reciprocal space are shown. The Brillouin zone of graphene is shown at(c)and the symmetry point is marked.positions are fully relaxed until the Hellmann-Feynman force on each atom is reduced to within0.01eV/ A.III.RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONFirstly,we calculated the electric structure of pure graphene. The calculated density of states(DOS)and the electronic structure are shown in Figure2.The conduction and the valence bands cross at a k-point of K shown in Figure2(b).Through the analysis of the angular momentum decomposition, the states around the Fermi level are found to result from the C-p z non-bonding orbitals,as the graphene is located on a x-y plane. The states below Fermi level(E F)are character-ized by bonding states and the states above E F are charaterized by *anti-bonding states. Now,we examine the change of the electronic structure of graphene due to hydrogen adsorption. We calculate the dependence of the band gap on the concentration( ) of hydrogen, where is the ratio of H to C sites. We tested two cases of H adsorption. In the rst case, one H is added on a graphene periodic supercell. The super-cell is made by the expansion of a primitive cell and its lattice vectors are N¢a1and N¢a2,where the a1and a2are shown in Figure1,by which a N¢N supercell is made. Therefore, the H s atoms are located periodically through the lattice vector of the supercell. We marked this system with H s(N¢N)and the concentration of H ( )is s N¢N.As an example,Figure3(a)describes the H1(4¢4)system.In this structure, the adsorbed hydro-gens are ordered in a triangular geometry. The electronic band structure of H s(N¢N)is shown in Figure4.The E g is shown to decease as the supercell size(N)increases, indicating that the band gap becomes wider as the concentration of hydrogen adsorption, ,in-creases.The adsorbed H breaks bonding of carbon's pz orbital,by which the band gap is opened. As hydro-gen atoms are adsorbed on graphene, one band around the Fermi level, indicated by the gray line,is revealed. It is from the hydrogen atoms. The hydrogenic band is almost at.It is noted that the E g is0when N is a multiple of3.These phenomena are similar to the\1/3Fig.2.(a)The calculated density of the electronic state.(b)The electric band structure of pure graphene. The p orbital band is divided into p x(triangle-shaped band),p y (circle-shaped band)and p z(diamond-shaped band).rule"discussed in carbon nanotubes[19].Some appropri-ate boundary conditions make it gapless;likewise,peri-odic waves disappear when a wave's crest meets another wave's trough. In the H s(2¢2),the band revealed by the H impurity is curved more severely than in other cases because the interactions between these closely located hydrogens are signi cant. The bonding length between H and C is calculated to be about1.13 A for all . We now investigate the change in the electronic band gap of graphene when the H adsorptions are randomly distributed on graphene. We call this system a random-H geometry. For this,we use a big supercell9¢9,in which several hydrogens are adsorbed at random positions on graphene. This system is denoted by H n(9¢9)(the num-ber of attached hydrogens in9¢9is n).In this case,First-Principles Study of the Interaction Between Graphene ¡¡¡{K.S.Choi and C.H.Park-941-Fig.3.(a)System of graphene with one attached H atom in a 4¢4supercell.Since a periodic supercell is used, the hydrogens are periodically located according to the expan-sions of lattice vectors.(b)The geometry of the calculated randomly-H-adsorbed graphene in a 9¢9supercell is schemat-ically described.is n 9¢9.In Figure 3(b),the randomly chosen H sites are described up to the 9th sites.Figure 5shows the cal-culated electronic structures of these systems. The at bands around the Fermi level, described by gray lines, are driven by hydrogen atoms,as discussed above. It is remarkable that the band gap from the graphene is found to increase with ,neglecting the impurity bands. The variaton of the band gap with is described in Figure 6(b).The variation of the band gap is found to be quite well described byE g =6:59p:(1)We investigated the energetic of the adsorption of hy-drogen atoms on graphene. The adsorption energy perone hydrogen atom on graphene is estimated as E A =E total (E gra +E H );(2)where E total is the total energy of the graphene system with a H atom attached,E gra is the total energy of pure graphene with the same supercell and E H is half the total energy of the H 2molecule in the same supercell struc-ture.Although,as the size of the supercell increases,i.e .,the concentration of H is larger, the estimated adsorp-tion energy E A per H atom becomes generally larger, the adsorption energies show an anomalous dependenceonFig.4.Detailed electronic structure of the H-ordered ge-ometry (see Figure 3(a)).The gray curve is created by the Himpurity.(a)shows that the E g deceases with the size of the supercell having one hydrogen.(b)shows the gapless band structures for a H in a N ¢N supercell, where N is a multiple of 3.the periodic supercell size,as shown by Figure 7(a),in these ordered H geometry. On the other hand, for the H-random-distributed ge-ometry calculations,we estimated the average adsorption energy per a H atom by using<E A >=[E total;n (E gra +nE H )]=n:(3)This average adsorption energy is comparable to the H adsorption energy E A estimated for the H-ordered geom-etry,as shown by Figure 7(a).In addition,we estimated the hydrogenic adsorption energy for the attachment of one additional H atom on graphene by usingE H A (n )=E total;n (E total;n 1+E H ):(4)Here,E total;n is the total energy of graphene with n hy-drogen atoms attached. The calculated results are shown in Figure 7(b),which indicates that the H attachment re-quires larger energy as the concentration of H increases. The calculated E A increases generally in proportion to due to the repulsive Coulomic interactions between hy-drogen atoms. The adsorption energy for the the 5th atom is small. The 5th H atom is closely located to the already existing rst H atom, therefore this result indi-cates that the interaction between 5th and rst H atoms is small. The results in Figure 7(b)indicate the energy required for the adsorption of an additional H to the already H-adsorbed surface. This H adsorption energy is calculated to increase as increases. It indicates that there should-942-Journal Hydrogenatoms.Fig.6.(a)Calculated electronic band gap versus the den-sity of adsorbed hydrogens ( ).Here, the hydrogen is as-sumed to be periodically located through the graphene. Here, the periodic supercell including one H atom is used and the size of supercell (N ¢N)is varied by the multi-expansion of the primitive cell by the a 1and a 2axes shown in Figure 1(a).In the 9¢9,6¢6and 3¢3supercells,the gap is zero,indi-cated by open circles ordered-H geometry .(b)The calculated band gap versus for the randomly-H-adsorbed graphene. Here, several hydrogen atoms are randomly located in of n-th additional H in the H-random geometry in(9¢9)cell.The relation between E HA and (the concentrationof H)can be described by E HA =11.07 +0.83.tachment signi cantly deviates from the line, indicatingsome local geometric e ect in the H distribution.Figure 7indicates that the variation of the energy gap can be well described by using its dependence on the density ,but the uctuation of the adsorption energy more sensitively depends on the hydrogen distribution geometry, which is consistent with a previous calculated result.Roman et al:studied the adsorption energy of H by using a small supercell [20],and they found that the energy was sensitive to the relative locations of the hydrogen atoms. When two H are located on the sameFirst-Principles Study of the Interaction Between Graphene¡¡¡{K.S.Choi and C.H.Park-943-sublattice,the energy is much larger than it is when two H are located at di erent sublattices. The band gap should also be a ected by the local geometry of the H locations, but in the present calculation,a big supercell was used,so the e ect of the local geometry on the band gap was not large. We did not consider fully the e ect of the geometry of the H distribution, because the cal-culations for a large supercell require large CPU times. This will be investigated in the future.IV.CONCLUSIONSIn conclusion, the band gap of graphene can be opened through the adsorption of hydrogens. The dependence of the band gap on the concentration of hydrogen, ,has a relation of E g G p ,which indicates that the concentra-tion of the adsorbed hydrogen atoms can be estimated by measuring a the band gap and also that graphene can be used a a hydrogen sensor. The ordered distribution of hydrogen on graphene causes a somehow anomalous change of the band gap, which can be explained by using the\1/3rule".ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThis work was supported by Pusan National Univer-sity Overseas Research Grant.REFERENCES[1]K.S.Park and K.S.Yi,J.Korean Phys.Soc.50,1873(2007).[2]K.S.Yi,D.Kim,K.S.Park and S.Kim,J.KoreanPhys.Soc.50,1674(2007).[3]H.T.Lim,J.W.Lee and Y.T.Yoo,J.Korean Phys.Soc.49,1101(2006).[4]D.D.L.Chung,J.Mater.Sci.37,1475(2002).[5]R.E.Peierls,Ann.I.H.Poincare5,177(1935).[6]ndau,Phys.Z.Sowjetunion,11,26(1937).[7]J.A.Venables,G.D.T.Spiller and M.Hanbuchen,Rep.Prog.Phys.47,399(1984).[8]J.W.Evans,P.A.Thiel and M.C.Bartelt,Sur.Sci.Rep.61,1(2006).[9]K.S.Novoselov et al.,Science306,666-669(2004);K.S.Novoselov et al.,Proc.Natl A102,10451 (2005);K.S.Novoselov et al.,Naure438,197(2005).[10]B.Partoens and F.M.Peeters,Phys.Rev.B74,075404(2006).[11]Y.B.Zhang,Y.W.Tan,H.L.Stormer and P.Kim,Nature(London)438,201(2005).[12]D.Stojkovic,P Zhang, mmert and V.H.Crespi,Phys.Rev.Lett.68,195406(2003).[13]M.H.F.Sluiter and Y.Kawazoe,Phys.Rev.Lett.68,085410(2003).[14]E.J.Duplock,M.Sche er and P.J.D.Lindan,Phys.Rev.Lett.92,22(2004).[15]P.E.Bl o chl,Phys.Rev.B50,24(1994).[16]P.Hohenberg and W.kohn,Phys.Rev.B136,864(1964);W.Kohn and L.J.Sham,Phys.Rev.A140, 1133(1965);J.Ihm,A.Zunger and M.L.Cohen,J.Phys.C12,4409(1979).[17]J.P.Perdew,K.Burke and M.Ernzerhof,Phys.Rev.Lett.77,3865(1996).[18]G.Kresse and J.Furthmuller,Comput.Mater.Sci.6,15(1996).[19]T.Miyake and S.Saito,Phys.Rev.B72,073404(2005).[20]T.Roman,W.A.Di e n o,H.Nakanishi,H.Kasai,T.Sug-imoto and K.Tange,Carbon45,218(2007).。
