AErnest Hemingway influenced 20th-century literature so much, matched by few other writers. Given his continuing importance,it might come as a surprise to learn that 2011 marked the 50th anniversary of his death. To remember the day,Firefly Books published Hemingway: A Life in Picture, written by Heminway scholar Boris Vejdovs ky with photos from the auther’s granddaughter, actress and writer Mariel Heminway. As the title suggested, the main draw of the book comes from more than 350 family photos(mainly black and white),many of which have never been published. There’re interes ting and inspiring pictures of the author from every stage of his life, starting with photos of him as a child dressed in girl’s clothing, moving on through his time as a wounded yong solider in WWI, stopping to explore his five years in Paris, and finally, settling on the older,white-beared “Papa” that most of us probably picture when we hear “Ernest Hemingway”.As great as the pictures and documents are, the confusing structure of the book lets them down a bit. Instead of being set up straight through time, the book is broken into eight sections“ An American Childhood”,“Africa, the Last Frontier”,etc. The information in each section is presented chronnologically(按时间顺序地),however, each section only contains information linked to that section’s theme. The divisio n sometimes causes problems.Personally, I’ve never been a big Hemingway fan, however, the informative text and photos in this book succeeded in making me feel connected to the man.Learning about his domineering(专横的)mother, for example, helps me understand why he grew into the person he became. And his childhood of being crazy about Teddy Roosevelt certainly explains a lot about him too.21.We can learn from the first paragragh___________.A.Ernest Hemingway made great contrubition to 20th-century literatureB.No body could match himC.Ernest Hemingway was a soilderD.Boris Vejdovsky left a lot of photos22.what is the main idea of paragragh 2?A. Ernest Hemingway’s familyB. Ernest Hemingway’s childhood.C. Ernest Hemingway’s books.D. The photos reflecting every sta ge of Hemingway’s life.23. What does the author think of the book?A. The author thinks little of the book.B. The author thinks that the book is common.C. The author thinks highly of the book.D. The author thinks that the book is difficult.BWhen I first visted Viareggio years ago, I was a bit confused to see a huge clown statue. It was explained to me that the clown is Burlamacco, the mascot of the Canival celebrations held in Viareggio every year.During the visit to the Canival of Viareggio Foundation that year, I met the people behind the organization of the event, and talked with them about the history of Viareggio’s Canival and what it means to the people of Viareggio. The Canival of Viareggio is one of the most important festivals in Italy and in Europe. It dates back to 1873 when a group of citizens decide to have a masked parade on Fat Tuesday to protest against to many taxes. Year after year the parade continued to grow in size and popularity. In 1931 Uberto Bonetti designed the clown named Burlamacco as part of an advertisement for the event. Because of his immediate popularity, the clown quickly became the mascot of Viareggio’s Canival, and his statue can be found all year on the street. If you visit during Canival, you will see him everyehere. Burlamcco is always a popular costom choice. Now I will tell you somethng about the Canival float(彩车). The people behind the floats are true artists. They often have elements of social and political commentary.the floats are surely amazing, with moving parts, performers, music and even dancers on the ground in front of the float. The best thing about the parade is that there are no barriers. You don’t watch this parade—you join it. So put on your costum and fill your pockets with confetti(五彩纸屑).24. When the author first visited Viareggio years ago,he/she _______A .showed no interest in BurlamaccoB .knew little about BurlamaccoC .went especially to see a huge clown statueD .bought a mascot of the Carnival celebrations25.for what was the Canival of Viareggio started?A .To start a popular parade.B .To attract tourists to Italy.C .To fight agaist too many taxes.D .To entertain some local citizens.26. After the clown was created,it ______.A .was considered to be strangeB .was very well receivedC .replaced the former mascotD .was unknown for many years27. The text is written to________.A .encourage people to visit ItalyB .encourage people to join a paradeC .tell about the carnival of ViareggioD .tell about the author’s exciting experienceCA 2015 study by the US Department of Agriculture Forest Service revealed that over 80 million birds are killed each year due to collision with motor vehicles. However ,one smart bird species that lives in some areas of the Mid-western United Stated like Nebraska, seems to be changing the trend. If the researchers are correct, this is due to evolution. The 30-year sudy was led by Charles Brown and his wife Mary Bomberger Brown. They observed Cliff Swallows tht live under highway bridges and overpasses. Like many animals that lack teeth,Cliff Swallows are constently on the roads piching up tiny bits of stones and swallow them. These bits act like teeth inside their stomach and assist in breaking down and digesting hard food like seeds. This ,together with the fact that they pursue their insect preys at speeds exceeding 20-25 miles per hour, often puts them right in the line of the ongoing car traffic, which usually results in their deaths. When the researchers began their study in 1982,about 20 Cliff Swallows died annually from car collisions. By 2012, the number had been reduced to between just 2-4. Deducing(推论) that there was something more than luck involved, they began investigating other factors. One of the things they measured was the wingspan of the birds that had been killed over the years, the bodies of which had fortunately been perserved. What they noticed was that over the year, the average of the wing lenghth of the most Cliff Swallow has been reduced from 4.3 inches to 4.1 inches. What they also observed is that the ones that still have longer wingspans became easier victims, possibly because it took them longer to take off and gain an altitude when confronted with the incoming car traffic. The researchers published their results of the study in the March 18th issue Current Biology. Thet believe that while some Cliff Swallow still have longer wingsoans, most have evolved(进化) , which is the reason they are thriving (繁荣的) in a habitat where traffic patterns can only get worse.28. What do we know about the birs in the first paragragh?A .they cannot find food to eat.B .they are killed by humans.C .they are killed by collisions.D .they disturb human’s life.29. Accroding to the couple’s observation, Cliff Swallow _______.A .always live far away from the noisy roads.B .are easy to become victims of the collisions with cars.C .could protect themselves from being hurt by humans.D .can help each other when they meet any other of danger.30. The shorter wing length of Cliff Swallows______.A . is beneficial to their speeding.B .helps them search for food easilyC .brought them many misfortunesD .is t he result of the birds’ evolution31. We can infer from the text that_____.A .some birds species will die out in the near future.B .the nature is destroyed because of humans’activityC .the birds and the humans can live together peacefullyD .some birds can adapt to the environment by evolution.DStudents wishing to safeguard their careers against changes in the job market should choose science rather than arts degrees, according to a survey of undergraduates.Engineering and chemistry were considered to be the most“future proof”,as they are the courses most likely to lead to an enduring(持久的) and adaptable career.Students polled by Pearson College were broadly optimistic that their chosen courses would prepare them for a world in which the job market could change dramatically during their working lives. But opinions was sharply divided over which degrees were best for future-proof careers.82 per cent of respondents believed engineering would lead to a future-proofskills,with 74 per cent believing the same of chemistry and 73 per cent of computer science. But just 33 per cent of undergraduates believed history would lead to a future-proof career, and 40 per cent English. However more than two thirds (67 per cent)of students thought the world of work would be significantly different or completely unrecognizable in 20 years. The findings, published today, come after Education Secretary Nicky Morgan sparked controversy with claims that teenagers should steer clear of the arts and humanities and choose science or math subjects if they want to access the widest range of jobs. She said that in previous decades students would only take math or science if they wanted to pursue a specific career such as medicine or pharmacy, but nowadays that “couldn’t be further from t he truth”.“if you want to do something different, or even if you didn’t know what you wanted to do...then the arts and humanities were what you chose, because they are useful—we were told—for all kinds of jobs. Of course now we know that that couldn’t be further from the truth, and that the subjects that keep people’s options open and unlock doors to all sorts of careere are the STEM(science, technology, engineering and math)subjects.”She also decribed math as “the subject that employers value most”and said that pupils who study A-level math will earn 10 per cent more over their lifetime.“thes e figures show us that too many young people aged 15 are making choices which will hold them back for the rest of their lives,”she said.32.
