Today, bicycles are elegantly simple machines that are mon around the world. Many people ride bicycles for recreation, whereas others use them as a means of transportation. The first bicycle was invented in Germany in 1818. Because it was made of wood, it wasn’t very strong nor did it have pedals (脚踏板).Riders moved it by pushing their feet against the ground. In 1839, Kirkpatrick Macmillan, a Scottish blacksmith, invented a much better bicycle. Macmillan’s machine had iron-covered wheels to keep them from getting worn down. He also used foot-operated levers, similar to pe dals, so his bicycle could be ridden at a quick pace. It didn’t look much like the modem bicycle, though, because its back wheel was substantially larger than its front wheel. Although Macmillan’s bicycles could be ridden easily, they were never produced in large numbers. In 1861, Frenchman Pierre Michaux and his brother Ernest invented a bicycle with an improved pedal mechanism. They called their bicycle a velocipede, but most people called it a “bone shaker” because of the effect of the wood and iron frame. Despite the impolite nickname, the velocipede was a hit. After a few years, the Michaux family was making hundreds of the machines annually, mostly for fun-seeking young people. Ten years later, James Starley , an English inventor, made several innovations that revolutionized bicycle design. He made the front wheel many times larger than the back wheel, put a gear on the pedals to make the bicycle more efficient, and lightened the wheels by using wire spokes. Although this bicycle was much lighter and less tiring to ride, it was still clumsy, extremely top-heavy,and ridden mostly for entertainment. It wasn’t until 1874 that the first truly modern bicycle appeared on the scene. Invented by another Englishman, H. J. Lawson, the safety bicycle would look famil iar to today’s cyclists. The safety bicycle had equal-sized wheels, which made it easier to ride. Lawson also attached a chain to the pedals to drive the back wheel. By 1893,the safety bicycle had been further improved with air-filled rubber tires, a diamond-shaped frame, and easy braking. With the improvements provided by Lawson; bicycles became extremely popular and useful for transportation. Today, they are built, used, and enjoyed all over the world.1.This passage was most likely written in order to _____.A. pare bicycles used for different purposesB. describe the problems early bicycle makers experiencedC. persuade readers to use bicycles for transportationD. tell readers about the early history of the bicycle2.Macmillan covered the wheels of his bicycle with iron to _____A. add weight to the bicycleB_ make the bicycle easier to rideC. allow the wheels to last longerD. let the bicycle be more fortable3. NASDAQ, standing for the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotation system, is one of the largest markets in the world for the trading of stocks(股票). The number of panies listed on NASDAQ is more than that on any of the other stock exchanges in the United States, including the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), and the American Stock Exchange (AMEX). The majority of panies listed on NASDAQ are smaller than most of those on the NYSE and AMEX. NASDAQ has bee known as the home of new technology panies, particularly puter and puter-related business. Trading on NASDAQ was started by stock brokers acting on behalf of their customers. The brokers talk with market makers who devote themselves to trading specific stocks to reach a price for the stock.Unlike other stock exchanges, NASDAQ has no central place where trading takes place. Instead, its market makers are located all over the country and make trades by telephone and the Internet. Because brokers and market makers trade stocks directly instead of on the floor of a stock exchange, NASDAQ is called over-the-counter market. The term over-the-counter refers to the direct nature of the trading, as in a store where goods are handed over a counter.Since its birth in 1971, the NASDAQ Stock Market has been an industry innovator (革新者). As the world’s first electronic stock market, NASDAQ long ago started technological trading innovation that is unequalled. Now being the world’s first truly global market, the NASDAQ Stock Market is the market of choice for business industry leaders worldwide. By providing an efficient environment for raising capital (资本), NASDAQ helped thousands of panies get their desired growth and successfully make the jump into public ownership.1. As daughters, their property belonged to their father; as wives, their property belonged to their husband. In a land where women could neither own goods nor enter into contracts with suppliers, it seemed impossible for women to apply for a patent. But a woman in Connecticut named Mary Dixon Kies had an idea worth patenting. It came to her during a time of fashion emergence in the United States. In 1807, President Thomas Jefferson decided to ban the import of British goods. In the end, the official freeze in trade proved to be a disaster, causing exports to drop sharply.Just 15 months of the ban forced the American fashion industry to turn inward. Now that New England couldn't ship goods, it had to make them instead. Kies wasn't the first woman to improve hat making at that time. A young girl named Besty Metcalf, who saw a straw hat in a store window that she couldn't afford, went home and came up with a different technique to make her own. I hat idea turned New England into a hotbed of straw hat making.Though Metcalt never patented her straw hat-making technique, when Kies came up with her idea she did. Her own method was to weave silk or thread into the straw, creating a pleasing appearance. One took advantage of a relatively new law, the 1790 Patent Act, which allowed all persons ask for protection of their original methods and designs, and got the first patent ever awarded to a woman on May 15, 1809.Kies’ method took off and fueled the growing straw hat industry.
