第一节 判断题 (5 分)

As we know, there are differences between western culture and Chinese culture. We can see

differences when we pay attention to the way words are used. Let’s look at the words about

animals and plants. Most expressions in Chinese about the dog, for example, “a homeless dog”, “a

mad dog”, “a running dog” and “a dog catching a mouse”, have negative(消极的)meanings. But

in western countries, dogs are thought to be honest and good friends of humans. In English, people

use the dog to describe positive(积极的)actions. For example, “you are a lucky dog” means you

are a lucky person. And “every dog has its day” means each person has good luck sometimes. To

describe a person’s serious illness, they say “sick as a dog”. The word “dog-tired” means very

tired. However, Chinese love cats very much. But in western culture, “cat” is often used to

describe a woman who is cruel(冷酷的). There are many other examples of how “cat” is used

differently as well.

The rose is regarded as a symbol of love in both China and some western countries. People

think the rose stands for(代表)love, peace, courage and friendship. And the rose is the national

flower of England, America and many other countries.

The words about plants and animals are used in positive or negative ways in different

cultures. We can learn about many differences in cultures by comparing how some words are used.

Typical(典型的)American teenagers used to look forward to growing up. Getting their first

driver's license or working at their first part-time jobs were exciting events in most teens' lives.

But these days, fewer teens are celebrating these milestones(重大事件).According to a study

published in the journal Child Development. fewer American teens are doing "adult" activities like

driving and working.

Perhaps too much homework is to blame. But it's not. Teens actually spend less time on

homework now than they did in the 1990s, The Atlantic reported.

Child development expert Jean Twenge says technology may be to blame. In her research,

she says that today's teens are different from past generations(一代人)because they were the first

generation to grow up with social media and smartphones. What kind of effect does this have on

how quickly kids grow up? For one thing, more time spent playing with technology means less

time spent on other things. This may explain why fewer kids are interested in "adult" activities.

It is hard to say growing up more slowly is good or bad. But kids can have more time for

social and emotional(情感的)development, which is necessary for success later in life, Twenge

said.

41. American teenagers used to be very excited when they had. their, first . part-time jobs.

42. More American teenagers are doing "adult" activities like driving today.

43. Teenagers spent more time on homework in America in the 1990s than today.

44. Fewer kids are interested in “adult" activities because they think they are not safe.

This Friday, across the US, kids are going to work with their parents instead of going to

school. They can help their parents do some cleaning, send e-mails and etc. Because April 28 is

Take Our Sons and Daughters to Work Day all over the US.

I still remember when this day started,I was very happy. But after only 40 minutes of driving

around the city, I was very bored. I couldn't read my book in the car as I would get carsick(晕车)and my dad didn't like to turn on the radio.I got hot and uncomfortable.People wouldn't get

into his taxi because they thought he already had a passenger:me--so nothing happened. It seemed

years before we went out for lunch. In fact, I started to miss the school.

Although the purpose of the day is to give kids a chance to experience possible jobs in the

future,I got something completely different from the day.I learned to value school life.Where else can you play with your friends, do science experiments and read great books all in one day?
