阅读理解细节理解题习题专练(一)Katherine Commale has long known what it is like to greet admiring crowds of kids, to have strangers beg for her signature, and to be featured in books and on TV shows. And yet most of her fellow Americans have never heard of the girl, who has helped to save millions of lives in African villages from malaria (疟疾). The story began when she was only five.On a spring night in 2006, Katherine’s mother, Lynda, watched Malaria: Fever Wars. The documentary showed the mosquito-borne disease caused millions of deaths in Africa. The next morning, she told her daughter about the program over breakfast. The little girl was particularly troubled to hear that and Lynda switched the topic to things her little girl could do to help, like donating mosquito nets.Initially, Katherine tried raising money by selling some old items, but failed. Soon, she and her younger brother Joseph decided to use small dolls to represent African families with Joseph dressed as a large mosquito, to explain to other children how a simple and cheap mosquito net could protect a sleeping child. Then they went to Katherine’s Sunday school and other schools. The idea took off. When that first effort ended, Katherine and her family donated $ 1, 500 to the United Nations Foundation to purchase mosquito nets.Although Katherine’s pace slowed down as she entered middle school, her fame was rising around the world. She has even been featured in a board game beside the youngest Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai. “I’m not Malala whatsoever,” she said. “It’s just an act of kindness.”1. How did Katherine get her first sum of money?A.By selling used things.B.By turning to her family.C.By seeking help from the UN.D.By delivering performances.(二)Bubba, a handsome blue-and-turquoise parrot, was the best little companion I could have hoped for. At 88 years of age, I don’t plan to have any more pets, but for 12 years, Bubba and I kept each other company throughout the day.I bought him from my local pet shop, when he was a baby; the bigger parrots were pushing him away from the seed dish and off the end of the perch—so I had to save him.I asked him his name, and he replied, “Bibbi”. I changed it to “Bubba”. He must have liked it because he learned to say it pretty quickly. He would make me laugh by practising new words, and if he didn’t pronounce them correctly, he would mutter loudly, which I took to mean he was cursing himself.I left Bubba’s cage open unless he did something naughty. I would shut him in till he behaved himself. It didn’t take long and he soon learned to say, “Bubba’s a good boy.” When he came out, I got lots of kisses! At bedtime I had to sing “Unchained Melody” to him.My favourite memory is of his last Christmas in 2014. He asked, “What doing?” I told him that the following day was Christmas Day and that the decorations would cheer us up. Next morning, he was out early kissing me, and it continued all day. That night, as I put him to bed he had a very satisfied look on his face.On his last day, he clung to me and lay in my hand for hours. I placed him on a feather duster in a small box so that he could be on my walker tray while I cooked dinner. At bedtime, I placed him back into the box with some water and seed. After the usual songs, I told him to lie down and get comfortable. In the morning he was lying down, one wing over his head.I’m sure he still visits me.2.Why did I save Bubba?A.He was pushed by other kids.B.He was better than any other pets. C.He was the best little companion.D.He was bullied by other parrots. 3.What would happen if Bubba did something naughty?A.He would fly away.B.He would be punished.C.He would curse himself.D.He would sing to himself.(三)We all have a favorite independent pet shop, where we always pick up the tastiest treats and best dog toys. The final winner will be announced in July.4.What will be awarded to those five lucky winners?A.A prize of £150.B.A free pet care.C.A pet dog.D.A dog hamper.5.Where can we check the information about the nominations?A.On the television.B.In the newspaper.C.On the Internet.D.On the radio.(四)THE TIME MACHINEIt was at ten o’clock today that the first of all Time Machines began its career. I gave it a last check, and sat myself in the leather seat. I pushed the starting lever (操纵杆) on the main panel forwards an inch then immediately backwards again. Looking around, I saw my laboratory exactly as before. Had anything happened? I thought my mind had tricked me. Then I saw the clock. A moment before, it was a minute or so past ten; now it nearly half past three!I drew a breath, gripped(紧握) the lever and pushed it forwards. The laboratory went hazy around me. My niece came in to fetch something, maybe her handkerchief, apparently without seeing me. It probably took her a minute, but to me she moved like a rocket! I pushed the lever further. Night came as if a lamp was being turned out, and in another moment came the day. Tomorrow night came, then skipped to day, again and again, faster and faster still. It is hard to explain the strange and unpleasant feeling of time travelling. It felt like I was being driven fast on a winding road. As my pace grew faster, the walls of the laboratory fell away, and I was left in the open air. The sun and moon looked as if they were being thrownacross the sky, but soon there was division between night and day. Around me I saw trees growing like puffs of smoke; they grew, spread, and died in moments. I saw huge buildings rise up, then disappear like in a dream. The whole surface of the earth was being changed, melting and flowing before my eyes. I calculated that I was being pushed through time at hundreds of years a minute.I had a strong urge to look at the random things that were being flashed before my eyes! I had thought about the risk of stopping the Time Machine many times. So long as I travelled at maximum speed, it didn't matter. But if I stopped and the same space was being occupied by something else, we would be forced together and explode like a bomb! Like an impatient fool, I pulled the lever backwards hard. With a sudden jolt, the Time Machine was flipped on its side, and I was thrown through the air.I was stunned for a moment, and then heard the sound of thunder. I was sitting in the rain in some mud next to the machine. “A fine welcome,” I said, “for a man who has travelled thousands of years to be here!”(Adapted from the novel The Time Machine written by H.G.Wells, a novelist famous for the science fiction)6.How does the Time Traveller first know he has travelled through time?A.He saw the clock move forward.B.He noticed the tomorrow night came.C.He spotted his niece moving like a rocket.D.He was being driven fast on a winding road.7.How does the Time Traveller feel when travelling through time?A.Doubtful and depressed.B.Safe and happy.C.Strange and unpleasant.D.Excited and joyful.8.Why is the Time Traveller worried about stopping the machine?A.Because he would be forced together with something else and explode like a bomb. B.Because he was being pushed through time at hundreds of years a minute. C.Because some random things would be flashed before his eyes.D.Because the same space would be destroyed by something else.9.Where does the Time Machine arrive when the man finally stops it?A.On a winding road.B.In some mud in the rain.C.In the muddy leather seat.D.Along the walls of the laboratory.(五)Avoiding a handshake may have been considered impolite a couple of years ago, but it is now getting more and more common, especially because of the outbreak of COVID-19.Health officials have expressed the importance of completely washing our hands and maintaining proper hand hygiene(卫生). As a result, people around the world are creating alternatives to handshakes such as fist bumps(碰,撞) and elbow bumps.Let’s take a look at some of the common greetings that are used around the world in place of the famous handshake and more of the alternatives people are using instead of shaking each others’ hands. If you have ever traveled to Asian countries like China, India, or Cambodia, you may notice that it is common to see people bowing to greet each other. Bowing is a traditional sign of respect in many Asian cultures and has been a custom for centuries.Meanwhile, in parts of Europe like France, Italy, and Spain and countries in Latin America like Mexico, Peru, and Brazil, the air kiss is more common. Various rules regarding the gender, relationship, and form also exist within these different countries. Officials in countries including France are recommending people to avoid direct kisses. Some other unique greetings include sniffing(嗅,闻) one another’s faces in native cultures in Greenland and Tuvalu, sticking out one’s tongue in Tibet (a region of China), and clapping one’s hands in the African countries of Zimbabwe and Mozambique. With the spread of COVID-19, people are getting creative with the ways they greet each other. A trend that has gained advantage is the “Wuhan Shake”, a greeting where two people gently bump each other’s feet with each foot. Moreover, people, including famous figures like Prince Harry, US Vice President Mike Pence, and celebrities and athletes, have been giving up the formal handshake for elbow bumps. Although officials have not clearly issued warnings against shaking hands, many doctors and health specialists have praised the handshake alternatives as a way to continue maintaining proper hygiene.10.How do people commonly greet each other in Cambodia?A.By sniffing one another’s faces.B.By clapping one’s hands.C.By bowing.D.By sticking out one’s tongue. 11.Which of the following statements is true according to the last three paragraphs? A.People no longer greet each other due to the spread of COVID-19.B.“Wuhan Shake” is a greeting in which people do elbow bumps.C.Shaking hands has been prohibited by the governments.D.The handshake alternatives are an approach to maintaining proper hygiene.(六)Summer is coming, and soon beaches will be full of the sounds of people having fun. If you can find a quieter spot of ocean and stick your ears under the water, you might hear many other sounds made by fish.Unlike birds, which make sounds in the same way, Audrey Looby, a fish-sound researcher at the University of Florida, says that fish make sounds in different ways. Fish do not have specialised vocal cords or voice boxes. So, one of the most common ways they make sounds is through tribulation — like clicking their teeth or rubbing their pectoral fins against other structures. Many others make sounds with their swim bladders, which they use primarily to stay level in the water.Scientists are unsure how many fish make sounds, but some estimate that it might be as many as 22,000 types, which is two-thirds of about 34,000 known species. And those are just the sounds fish make on purpose — to call to mates, to let other fish know they’re in trouble or to communicate that “this is my area of the reef, listen to how tough I sound so why don’t you just swim away,” Looby says. Fish also make passive sounds, such as chewing noises as they munch on seagrass or algae.According to Looby, active and passive sounds are important because they convey a lot of information about what’s going on to fish and to researchers. For example, let anyone who’s listening know that there is a food source available. With climate change making parts of the ocean heat up and become unlivable for fish in other ways, researchers say that fish sounds could help them preserve and restore habitats. For example, there are projects looking into whether piping in the sounds of a healthy reef into one that is dying might encourage fish to come back and populate it. “Learning about fish sounds lets us learn about underwater environments and hopefully manage them at the same time,” Looby said.12.What happens to a fish because of its swim bladder function?A.It can find a habitat.B.It can click their teeth.C.It can float in the water.D.It can attract the other fish.13.Why might fish make sounds?A.To find food sources.B.To warn other animals.C.To sound like a boat whistle.D.To reduce the effects of environment. 14.Why do scientists want to play healthy reef sounds in a dying reef?A.To get fish to return to it.B.To get scientists to find it.C.To show that it is not safe.D.To show how deep underwater it is.(七)Using AI to manage customer service is a trend that we will increasingly see more of. However, that’s not to be confused with completely replacing human interaction when it comes to customer service. So what does that mean? Does it mean the world of CS will soon be overrun by robots? In fact, all customer service interactions have two axes (轴): emotion and urgency. New AI tools are rapidly emerging in the support space that can address high-urgency situations quickly, but when it comes to high-emotion situations, no AI can deal with them successfully.A robot might be able to recognize you’re trying to check in for a flight that was recently canceled, but the emotional axis is entirely un-programmable. Perhaps the flyer has increasingly high emotions around the flight being canceled because she is flying to a business meeting for an important occasion. Instances like this, regardless of how small or large the case is, can create high-stress moments for the customer. Only a person can comprehend the difference.High-stress moments are the ones that stick with customers forever, so it’s important to have a plan in place. What separates the best companies is a keen sense for determining which customer service functions AI can handle on its own and which cases need to be handled by a human with AI assistance. For inquiries that are high on emotion, there’s no substitute for the personal touch of a human. Passengers whose luggage is lost are going to seek out an employee to help them locate their bag. Although AI can be used to locate that bag, it’s too emotional of an interaction to remove the human element. The conversation around AI now is too focused on the question of how AI can replace agent interaction, which is missing the point. The aim of AI shouldn’t be to replace human interaction, but to improve human interaction. The question from here won’t be how far we can push AI, but how we can use our imagination to continue reinventing the problem-solving process.15.What advantage does a real person have over AI tools?A.He can balance emotion and urgency.B.He can understand customers’ feelings well.C.He can handle urgency more quickly.D.He can tell the difference of various emotions.16.Why should companies have a plan for high-stress moments?A.High-stress moments are very important for customers.B.High-stress moments require more AI tools.C.High-stress moments are unforgettable for customers.D.High-stress moments are ignored by most companies.(八)Being a parent is tough. Prejudice(偏见) against parents in the workplace only makes it harder.Asking for flexible schedule is not unique to working parents only. I’ve worked with people in their twenties that requested to work a four-day schedule so they could go back to school part time. I’ve seen older adults in the workplace change their schedules so that they can spend more time at home. Almost everyone has to cut out of the office every now and again fora doctor’s appointment or other personal matters. Flexible schedules seem to be synonymous(代名词) with working parents, but in reality, they are not.Parents aren’t devoted to their jobs. This is really surprising because it’s quite the contrary. There is actually strong evidence that parents are more devoted to their jobs than many other employees. They are some of the most focused employees out there. Parents are less likely to change jobs than other employees. Stability(稳定) is key when raising a family.Parents aren’t good team members. Since it is parents that need to leave the office at 5 or aren’t able to come in before 9, most people think that the singletons on the team need to make up for it. In today’s technology world, this is hardly the case. While many parents do limit their physical “in office” hours, most spend time on weekends, early mornings, and after work working. Besides, parents may be more likely to take vacations during major holidays due to children’s school schedules.Parents are at work only out of financial needs. Why would anyone want to leave their children behind and come to the workplace if they didn’t have to? Actually, a lot of people do. Caring for children is a wonderful experience, but everyone needs a break. Many parents may still be interested in their field of work, finding work interesting. Money is nice, but it’s certainly not the only reason that parents are there.17.Why do some young people ask for a four-day work schedule?A.To see their working parents.B.To return to school part time.C.To spend more time at home.D.To make an appointment with doctors.。
读完短文,你知道短文讲述了怎样的道理吗?_____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ 思路导引1.
ADo you know that over 1/3 of all food produced in the world goes to waste? According to the United Nations (UN), every year around the world, about one billion (十亿) tons of food is wasted. At the same time, there are nearly one billion people who go hungry. Simply 1/4 of the food wasted is enough to keep them out of hunger. In addition, the wasted food produces over three billion tons of carbon dioxide (CO2), which speeds up climate (气候) change. What can we do to solve this food waste problem? One effective solution is balancing food production with demand (需求). In hotels and other similar places, special instruments should be used so that cooking specialists just prepare and cook food as it is ordered.Another effective solution is starting programs to reduce (减少) food waste. Stores and buyers can try their best to be creative in food waste reduction. For example, stores can provide customers with instructions telling them how to make full use of food. Buyers can try not fixing their eyes only on food of the best quality (质量). Sometimes, the food of non-top quality is also good enough to eat, or can be bought and then used to make delicious dishes. One of the hardest solutions to achieve is for each and every one to buy and prepare food with a plan of their own so that less food is wasted. Challenging as it is, the use of meal plans in preparing food can play an important role in ending food waste in the family.Food recycling is one of the known solutions. Efforts are now already in progress. Food that is not safe for humans to eat is recycled into other products such as animal feeds and clothing. Yet, there is still a long way to go and much for improvement in this area.In a word, food waste has been one of the biggest problems in the world that have influenced us greatly. Many solutions have been found and many more are yet to be worked out. If each of us can put in more efforts, food waste is sure to be reduced for the good of our future.1.According to the passage, what is a possible result of food waste?A. The problem of worldwide hunger.B. A big increase in food production.C. The speed-up of climate change.D. A sudden drop in population.2.What can we learn from the passage?A. Food recycling has been hugely successful.B. Buyers should give up non-top quality food.C. Stores should train people to make delicious dishes.D. Meal plans in the family are hard to put into practice.3.What is the passage mainly about?A. Benefits of reducing food waste.B. Solutions to the food waste problem.C. The importance of fighting food waste.D. The attitude to the food waste problem.BWhen considering the kind of experience that makes life better, most people first think that happiness depends on experiencing pleasure: good food, good jobs, all the comforts that money can buy. If we couldn't have these, we might as well sit in front of the television on a quiet evening.Pleasure is an important part of the quality of life, but by itself it doesn't bring happiness. When people think further about what makes a worthy life, they tend (倾向于) to move beyond pleasant memories and begin to remember other events, other experiences that overlap (有重叠) pleasurable ones but fall into a group with a separate name: enjoyment. Enjoyable events take place when people have not only satisfied a need or met some earlier expectation, but also achieved something unexpected.Enjoyment is characterized by a sense of curiosity, of achievement. Playing a tennis game that improves one's ability is enjoyable, as is reading a book that shows things in a new light, as is having a conversation that leads us to express ideas we didn't know we had. None of these experiences may be especially pleasurable when they are taking place, but when we think back on them afterwards, we would say, "That really was fun" and wish they would happen again. After an enjoyable event we know that we have changed, and grown.Experiences that give pleasure can also give enjoyment, but the two feelings are quite different. For example, everybody takes pleasure in eating. However, to enjoys food is more difficult — you have to pay enough attention to a meal, so as to sense and tell its various tastes. As this example suggests, we can experience pleasure without any psychic energy, while enjoyment happens only as a result of full attention. A person can feel pleasure without anyeffort, as long as certain parts in his brain are stimulated (刺激). But it's impossible to enjoy a tennis game or a book without full attention. It's for this reason that pleasure does not last long, nor does it make us grow. Growth requires full attention to goals that are new, that are relatively challenging.Without enjoyment, life will go on, and it can even be pleasant. But it depends heavily on luck and the external (外部的) environment. To achieve personal control over the quality of experience, however, we need to learn how to build enjoyment into what happens day in, day out.1.You will most probably experience enjoyment when you ________.A. buy expensive shoesB. order a delicious mealC. talk with friends for new ideasD. sit quietly in front of a television2.What do you know about pleasure and enjoyment from the passage?A. Enjoyment grows out of pleasure.B. Pleasure and enjoyment come hand in hand.C. Pleasurable experiences are part of enjoyable ones.D. Some experiences provide both pleasure and enjoyment.3.The words "psychic energy" in Paragraph 4 are closest in meaning to ________.A. attentionB. interestC. abilityD. knowledge4.The writer probably agrees that ________.A. feeling pleasure stops people from achieving growthB. feeling enjoyment comes with achieving growthC. a worthy life depends on luck and environmentD. pleasure is the key to a happy and worthy lifeCBetty was excited to show her brother David the basket filled with seashells.

1We may all have had the embarrassing moment:Getting halfway through a story only to realize that we've told this exact tale before,to the person we're boring with it now. Why do we make such memory mistakes?According to a research published in Psychological Science,it may have to do with the way our brains process different types of memory.Researchers Nigel Gopie,of the Rotman Research Institute in Toronto, and Colin Macleod,of the University of Waterloo, divided memory into two kinds. The first was source memory,or the ability to keep track of where information is coming from. The second was destination memory,or the ability to recall who we have given information to.They found that source memory functions better than destination memory,in part because of the direction in which that information is travelling. To study the differences between source and destination memory, the researchers did an experiment on 60 university students, according to a New York Times report. The students were asked to associate 50 random(随意的) facts with the faces of 50 famous people. Half of the students ―told‖ each fact to one of the faces, reading it aloud when the celebrity's picture appeared on a computer screen. The other half read each fact silently and saw a different celebrity picture afterward. When later asked to recall which facts went with which faces, the students who were giving information out (destination memory) scored about 16 percent lower on memory performance compared with the students receiving information(source memory). The researchers concluded that outgoing information was less associated with its environmental context(背景)-that is,the person-than was incoming information. This makes sense given what is known about attention. A person who is giving information, even little facts, will devote some mental resources to thinking about what is being said. Because our attention is finite(有限的),we give less attention to the person we are giving information to.After a second experiment with another group of 40 students, the researchers concluded that selffocus is another factor that undermines destination memory. They asked half the students to continue giving out random information, while the other told things about themselves. This time around, those who were talking about themselves did 15 percent worse than those giving random information.―When you start telling these personal facts compared with non self facts, suddenly destination memory goes down more, suggesting that it is the selffocus component(成分) that's reducing the memory,‖Gopie told Live Science.1.The point of this article is to ________.A.give advice on how to improve memoryB.say what causes the memory to worsenC.explain why we repeat stories to the same personD.introduce different kinds of memories2.Those who read each fact silently and saw a different celebrity picture afterward ______.A.can memorize more informationB.have worse memoryC.are more likely to repeat storiesD.paid more attention to themselves3.The person who is giving information ________.A.may receive little factsB.focuses more on what he is sayingC.has finite attentionD.pays much attention to his own behavior4.The underlined word ―undermines‖ probably m eans ________.A.weakensB.benefitsC.explainsD.supports5.What did the scientists conclude from the second experiment?A.Destination memory is weaker than source memory.B.Focusing attention on oneself leads to relatively poor source memory performance.C.Associating personal experience with information helps people memorize better.D.Selffocus is responsible for giving information twice or more to the same person.2For the rest of the week, Joe practiced kicking football hard, concentrating on his each kicking. Sometimes Joe hit the ball straight. Sometimes it went wide again. But it seemed that the more he believed he could do it, the easier it was.―I’m not a joke now,‖ thought Joe. ―Not a joke at all!‖ But a practice wasn’t like a real match and his boots were still not giving him enough power. He should have told his mum and dad about it straight away but, of course, he didn’t. He was always shy to ask for things. Finally, late on the night before the match, he could hold himself back no longer.―Dad, I haven’t got any proper football boots …‖ he said.―Ah,‖ said Dad, ―I might be able to help you there.‖At the words, Joe was excited. New boots! He thought. ―He’s got me some new boots! He must have got me them for Christmas,‖ thought Joe, ―But now that I’m in an important match, he’s giving them to me early. Wonderful!‖Dad went upstairs. Joe excitedly tried to watch the football preview on TV. He wasn’t playing for Manchester United or Liverpool, of course, but he was part of it all now; part of the thrill. His legs twitched with every kick on the screen. His head shook with every centre. And all the time, his mind was racing ahead to his own great game the next morning, in his super new boots. It was ages before his dad came downstairs again. He put a large pair of shiny black boots in front of Joe.As he stared at them, the boy felt as if someone had poured ice into his brain. The boots were awful!―Good, eh?‖ said his dad.Joe found it hard to speak. He had never seen anything like them before. They weren’t low-cut, soft or…. They had big, hard square toes, great big long studs and they were high at the ankle. They were his dad’s old rugby boots, polished up.Joe was filled with disappointment. They had been good boots, qua lity boots. And they were his size. Joe’s feet were enormous for his age. But he could imagine what everyone at school would say.― …,‖ he finally gasped, ― should be exactly my size.‖―At least I won’t slip,‖ he thought, ―the studs are like sharks’ teeth!‖ Then he couldn’t help thinking about those in Ashton’s windows, which he had been longing to get. That night, he went to bed early but he didn’t sleep much because he was so terrified of being late. He woke at 1.17, 2.49, 3.37, 3.43, 4.55. The numbers jumped off the big face of his digital clock. Then 10.40!Ahhh!!!He jumped out of bed. He seized the clock. 6.03! 10.40 had been only a dream. At eight, breakfast time, it was raining like mad.―Might get called off, Joe,‖ suggested his mum.―Never, Mother.…will not be like cricket,‖ said his dad. ―Will take a lot to stop football.‖Joe checked everything for the tenth time. He put his boots at the very bottom of his large bag, well out of sight. He had decided to put them on when nearly everyone had left t he changing room. Then his classmates wouldn’t make fun of him. Soon, it was time to set out.―Good luck!‖ said his mum, giving him a kiss. His dad had his coat on, ready for his morning deliveries. ―Want a lift to school?‖ he said. ―I hope to get down to watch you when I’ve done the trip to Eccles.‖―Okay,‖ said Joe.As Dad’s van carried him down the hill to school, Joe was thinking about the boots. If only … but no, he had to stop that kind of thinking. It doesn’t matter about the boots, he told himself.7.From the first two paragraphs, we can learn that _____.A. But Julie and Tim Rivenbark planned a longer vacation with their two children—the Rivenbark family is on a one-year trip around the world. They plan to visit 30 countries in all.Right now, the four travellers are about halfway through their trip. Ms. Rivenbark says they are trying to see as much of the world as they can. She says ―we have been through Europe, southern Africa, now we are kind of working our way through Asia. So we have been to a bunch of big cities, like Dubai, Johannesburg, Rome and Bangkok.‖The family has also spent time floating in kayaks(long narrow boats) in Italy, flying in hot air balloons in Myanmar, hiking to the Everest Base Camp in Nepal and going on a journey to see or hunt animals in South Africa.Mr. Rivenbark says the family has also ridden on ostrich birds, elephants, and camels. But, he says, one of the most interesting experiences of the trip has been meeting new people.―People have been extremely friendly, very welcoming and love our kids—interacting with them and their reaction to see our kids enjoying themselves in their country.‖Eleven-year old Tyler says he has enjoyed learning a bout the people they have met. ―I learned in Africa that people have very different lifestyles compared to Americans.‖ His sister, 9-year-old Kara, discovered that she liked Thai food.Ms. Rivenbark says that the extended trip teaches the children a lot mo re than short visits would have. ―I think that the longer we travel, the more impact it has on how they see the world. I can see them changing more than they can see themselves.‖It took the family a year to prepare for the trip. They had to sell their house and cars. Ms. Rivenbark quit her job and her husband is using unpaid leave. They carry small bags filled with lightweight clothing and whatever else they need. Ms. Rivenbark says she enjoys being able to carry everything she needs on her back. She says she does not miss the things she has back home. ―What has become more important is making these memories as a family and taking those with us instead.‖ Tyler and Kara each have iPads so they can communicate with teachers to stay current with their schoolwork. Tyler is also creating a 365-day video blog. The Rivenbarks will continue to head east for the next six months. They plan to visit Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, China andAustralia. On the other hand, if you add ―family‖ to these three choices given above, there is a chance that 99% of the people are going to put their family first, especially if they happen to be ladies! The main reason is because nature has created a woman to be the cherisher and the nurturer (哺育者) of the family, while the man is the hunter and protector of his little family. That is the natural rule which has come down through thousands of years. Even if a person happens to be a comparatively worldly-wise person and has no idea of taking on the responsibility of a family, he has a picture of a tight little loving unit in his subconscious (潜意识).They tell a story about a successful millionaire businessman who died and the whole city came to pay its respects. One of his business competitors, met the son and said, ―We are really going to miss your father. You see, I knew your father well.‖ And the son replied, ―You happen to be really lucky there, because I never did.‖ So, you might be an extremely successful person in your own right upon Wall Street, but if your little child fails to come running out to welcome his daddy at the end of the day to be swung up in his father’s arms and held there lovingly and protectively, you come in the ―nothing‖ category in the business of life. Many people are under the impression that taking on the responsibility of the family is quite tiresome, but they do not know what it takes to be a parent. It is very easy to be a biological father or a biological mother, but the real mother and the real father is that person who stays awake all night when the baby is teething, teaches him right from wrong, is there to hold him when he takes his first steps, and in every way shows that he is there to cherish (珍惜) and protect the little one from harm. There was a man who did not believe in family, because of an unhappy childhood. But he found a faithful woman to love him unconditionally. The moment he picked up his little baby, he said, ―Well son, welcome to the world! I am here to teach you what your mama has taught me, and we shall both protect you, when you need our help. I will teach you to be a good, just and fair man.‖18.The writer writes Para.1 to _________.A. introduce the topicB. raise a questionC. present the surveyD. make a comparison19.What does the underlined expression ―loving unit‖ ( Para.2) most probably refer to ?A. What Contributes to One’s Success5A recent study, while showing a generally positive attitude toward science, also suggests a widespread worry that it may be ―running out of control‖. This idea is dangerous.Science can be a force for evil as well as for good. Its applications can be channeled either way, depending on our decisions. The decisions we make, personally or collectively, will determine the outcomes of science. But here is a real danger. Science is advancing so fast and is so strongly influenced by businesses that we are likely to believe whatever decisions we come to will make little difference. And, rather than fighting for the best possible policies, we may step back and do nothing. Some people go even further. They say that despite the moral and legal objections, whatever is scientifically possible will be done-somewhere, sometime. They believe that science will get out of control in the end. This belief is dangerous too, because it fuels a sense of hopelessness and discourages them from making efforts to build a safer world. In our interconnected world, the lack of agreement in and out of the world of science can lead to the failure to control the use of science. Without a common understanding, the challenges of ―controlling‖ science in this century will be really tough. Take human cloning for example. Despite the general agreement among scientists on its possible huge impact(影响) on traditional moral values, some countries still go ahead with the research and development of its related techniques. The outcomes are hard to predict. Therefore, discussions on how science is applied should be extended far beyond scientific societies. Only through the untied efforts of people with hope, can we be fully safe against the misuse of science and can science best serve mankind in the future.23.What can we conclude from the recent study?A. People think highly of science.B. People hold mixed opinions about science.C. Science is getting dangerously out of control.D. Science is used for both good and bad purposes.24.According to the passage, what will happen if we hold that science is getting beyond control?A. The development of science will hopelessly slow down.B. Businesses will have even greater influence on science.C. The public will lose faith in bringing about a bright future.D. People will work more actively to put science under control.25.The discussion should reach beyond scientific societies because_______A. scientists have failed to predict the outcomesB. the ties between different areas need strengtheningC. united efforts are necessary for the development of scienceD. people need to work together to prevent the bad use of science26.What is the main idea of the passage?A. Science and its applications bring us many dangers.B. The development of science mostly lies in people's attitudes.C. Mankind can largely take control of science with their efforts.D. The future of science will be influenced by the dangerous ideas.6We are not who we think we are.The American self-image is spread with the golden glow of opportunity. We think of the United States as a land of unlimited possibility, not so much a classless society but as a place where class is mutable—a place where brains, energy and ambition are what counts, not the circumstances of one's birth. The Economic Mobility Project, an ambitious research led by Pew Charitable Trusts, looked at the economic fortunes of a large group of families over time, comparing the income of parents in the late 1960s with the income of their children in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Here is the finding: "The 'rags to riches' story is much more common in Hollywood than on Main Street. Only 6 percent of children born to parents with family income at the very bottom move to the top. That is right, just 6 percent of children born to parents who ranked in the bottom of the study sample, in terms of income, were able to bootstrap their way into the top. Meanwhile, an incredible 42 percent of children born into that lowest are still stuck at the bottom, having been unable to climb a single rung of the income ladder. It is noted that even in Britain---a nation we think of as burdened with a hidebound class system-children who are born poor have a better chance of moving up. When the studies were released, most reporters focused on the finding that African-Americans born to middle-class or upper middle-class families are earning slightly less, in inflation-adjusted dollars, than did their parents. One of the studies indicates, in fact, that most of the financial gains white families have made in the past three decades can be attributed to the entry of white women into the labor force. This is much less true for African-Americans.The picture that emerges from all the quintiles, correlations and percentages is of a nation in which, overall, "the current generation of adults is better off than the previous one", as one of the studies notes. The median income of the families in the sample group was $55,600 in the late 1960s; their children's median family income was measured at $71,900. However, this rising tide has not lifted all boats equally. The rich have seen far greater income gains than have the poor.Even more troubling is that our nation of America as the land of opportunity gets little support from the data. Americans move fairly easily up and down the middle rungs of the ladder, but there is "stickiness at the ends" —four out of ten children who are born poor will remain poor, and four out of ten who are born rich will stay rich.27.What did the Economic Mobility Project find in its research?A. Children from low-income families are unable to bootstrap their way to the top.B. Hollywood actors and actresses are upwardly mobile from rags to riches.C. The rags to riches story is more fiction than reality.D. The rags to riches story is only true for a small minority of whites.28.It can be inferred from the undertone of the writer that America, as a classless society, should ________.A. perfect its self-image as a land of opportunityB. have a higher level of upward mobility than BritainC. enable African-Americans to have exclusive access to well-paid employmentD. encourage the current generation to work as hard as the previous generation29.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A. The US is a land where brains, energy and ambition are what counts.B. Inequality persists between whites and blacks in financial gains.C. Middle-class families earn slightly less with inflation considered.D. Children in lowest-income families manage to climb a single rung of the ladder.30.What might be the best title for this passage?A. Social Upward Mobility.B. Incredible Income Gains.C. Inequality in Wealth.D. America Not Land of Opportunity.7Four years ago my sweet mom went to be with her Lord. She did it her way.I got the call at work, and I headed home quickly.Mom and Dad lived on a small farm that they had owned since I was seven.I hated going there every weekend. There was nothing for a young girl to do but watch the one station on the old TV set, if the weather allowed reception. My mom, on the other hand, loved the peace and quiet of the land. The place was rustic, with no indoor plumbing or heat.We had a big wood stove in the kitchen that did its best to heat the little farmhouse, but it always seemed cold and too quiet to me.In the evenings, my mom and I would sit for hours singing in the little kitchen.I sang the melody and Mom harmonized. Her favorite song was "Moon River" and we sang it over and over.Mom told me stories about how when I was a little girl, I could sing before I could talk.As time passed, I had my own children and went to visit them every week or two.The kids loved the farm and the tractor rides with my dad.Me, well, I still hated the silence of the farm. While my mom loved to sit at her kitchen table and look out at her garden and flowers and retell all the old stories, I missed the hustle and bustle(喧闹)of my life at home. But I sat there listening quietly as she reminisced. Now, I sat back in the silence and the silence was deafening so I finally leaned over to turn on an old radio.Music always comforted me.My heart skipped a beat."Moon River" was playing on the radio.I sat there stunned, with a tear running down my cheek, as I listened to every familiar note.31.From the first paragraph, we know that the writer’s mother ________.A.left the small farm with LordB.passed away four years agoC.left for Lord to live her own wayD.preferred to be with Lord32.The underlined word reminisced in the fifth paragraph probably means ________.A.shouted B.comfortedC.recalled D.sighed33.The writer didn’t like staying in the farm for the following reasons except that ________.A.she could only sing one song in the small farmB.it was too cold and quietC.there was nothing more that could make her excitedD.the place was rustic, with no indoor plumbing or heat34.Which of the following would be the best title for this passage? _______A.Cherish(珍惜)life B.My happy childhoodC.Our small farmhouse D.Mom’s music8Foxes and farmers have never got on well. These small dog-like animals have long been accused of killing farm animals. They are officially classified as harmful and farmers try to keep their numbers down by shooting or poisoning them. Famers can also call on the services of their local hunt to control the fox population. Hunting consists of running after a fox across the countryside, with a group of specially trained dogs, followed by men and women riding horses. When the dogs eventually catch the fox, the kill it or a hunter shoots it.People who take part in hunting think of it as a sport. They wear a special uniform of red coats and white trousers, and follow strict rules of behavior. But owning a horse and hunting regularly are expensive, so most hunters are wealthy. It is estimated that up to 100,000 people watch or take part in fox-hunting. But over the last couple of decades the numberof people who are against fox-hunting, because they think it is brutal(残暴的), has risen sharply. Nowadays it is rare for a hunt to pass off without some kind of conflict between hunters and hunt opponents (阻止者). Sometimes these incidents lead to violence, but mostly opponents discourage the hunt by misleading riders and disturbing the trail of the fox's smell, which the dogs follow.Noisy conflicts between hunters and opponents have become so common that they are almost as much a part of hunting as running after foxes itself. But this year supporters of fox-hunting face a much bigger threat to their sport. A Labour Party member of Parliament(英国议会), Mike Foster, is trying to get Parliament to approve a new law which will make the hunting of wild animals with dogs illegal. If the law is passed, wild animals like foxes will be protected under the ban in Britain.35.Wealthy people in Britain have been hunting foxes to ______.A. benefit the farmersB. get entertainmentC. show off their wealthD. limit the fox population36.The opponents of fox-hunting often discourage the game by ______.A. using violenceB. taking legal actionC. seeking help from farmersD. confusing the fox hunters37.A new law may be passed by the British Parliament to ______.A. protect wild animals like foxesB. control fox-hunting on a large scaleC. prohibit farmers from hunting foxesD. standardize the behavior of fox-hunting38.What can be inferred from this passage?A. Limiting the fox population is unnecessary at all.B. Killing foxes with poison is not allowed by the law.C. Hunting foxes with dogs is considered cruel and violent.D. Fox-hunting causes conflicts between hunters and farmers.9Working with a group of baboons (狒狒) in the Namibian desert, Dr. Alecia Carter of the Department of Zoology, Cambridge University set baboons learning tasks involving a novel food and a familiar food hidden in a box. Some baboons were given the chance to watch another baboon who already knew how to solve the task, while others had to learn for themselves. To work out how brave or anxious the baboons were, Dr. Carter presented them either with a novel food or a threat in the form of a model of a poisonous snake. She found that personality had a major impact on learning. The braver baboons learnt, but the shy ones did not learn the task although they watched the baboon perform the task of finding the novel food just as long as the brave ones did. In effect, despite being made aware of what to do, they were still too shy to do what the experienced baboon did.The same held true for anxious baboons compared with calm ones. The anxious individuals learnt the task by observing others while those who were relaxed did not, even though they spent more time watching. This mismatch between collecting social information and using it shows that personality plays a key role in social learning in animals, something that has previously been ignored in studies on how animals learn to do things. The findings are significant because they suggest that animals may perform poorly in cognitive (认知的)tasks not because they aren’t clever enough to solve them, but because they are too shy or nervous to use the social information. The findings may impact how we understand the formation of culture in societies through social learning. If some individuals are unable to get information from others because they don’t associate with the knowledgeable individuals, or they are too shy to use the information once they have it, information may not travel between all group members, preventing the formation of a culture based on social learning.39.What is the first paragraph mainly about?A.The design of Dr. Carter’s research.B.The results of Dr. Carter’s research.。
