Lesson 66 The Channel TunnelThe Channel Tunnel is an undersea tunnel between France and England. It is used by Eurostar, a high-speed train that travels between London, Paris and Brussels. The tunnel is 31 miles (50 km) long, and it took six years to build. It was opened in 1994. Three tunnels were built: two for trains and one for emergencies. The tunnel goes beneath the English Channel, which is the narrow strip of water between the UK and France. The trains run at speeds of over 300km per hour. The idea for the Channel Tunnel dates back to the early 19th century, when a French engineer, Albert Mathieu, proposed building a tunnel under the Channel. Many people thought it was impossible, but the idea never went away.In 1986, construction work on the tunnel began. A huge team of engineers worked on the project, using massive drills and machines to dig through the rock beneath the sea bed. They had to work quickly to keep to the tight schedule and to prevent the tunnel from flooding. The tunnel has brought many benefits to both countries. It has made travel between England and France much quicker and easier. It has also enabled goods and services to be transported more easily across Europe. However, theconstruction of the tunnel was very expensive and it took a long time to build. Some people thought it was a waste of money.Despite the initial doubts and difficulties, the Channel Tunnel has now become a well-known and much-loved symbol of Anglo-French cooperation. Its success has inspired many other ambitious projects around the world.。

Why was the first tunnel not completed? In 1858, a French engineer, Aime Thome de Gamond, arrived in England with a plan for a twenty-one-mile tunnel under the English Channel. He said that it would be possible to build a platform in the centre of the Channel. This platform would serve as a port and a railway station. The tunnel would be well-ventilated if tall chimneys were built above sea level. In 1860, a better plan was put forward by an Englishman, William Low. He suggested that a double railway-tunnel should be built. This would solve the problem of ventilation, for if a train entered this tunnel, it would draw in fresh air behind it. Forty-two years later a tunnel was actually begun. If, at the time, the British had not feared invasion, it would have been completed. The world had to wait almost another 100 years for the Channel Tunnel. It was officially opened on March 7,1994, finally connecting Britain to the European continent.【课⽂翻译】1858年,⼀位名叫埃梅.

Then in 1989, twenty-six years after the crash, the plane was accidentally rediscovered in an aerial survey of the island. By this time, a Lancaster bomber in reasonable condition was rare and worth rescuing. The French authorities had the plane packaged and moved in parts back to France. What was‘sweet as honey’and why?
In 1963 a Lancaster bomber crashed on Wallis Island, a remote place in the South Pacific, a long way west of Samoa. The plane wasn't too badly damaged, but over the years, the crash was forgotten and the wreck remained undisturbed. Then in 1989, twenty-six years after the crash, the plane was accidentally rediscovered in an aerial survey of the island. By this time, a Lancaster bomber in reasonable condition was rare and worth rescuing. The French authorities had the plane packaged and moved in parts back to France. Now a group of enthusiasts are going to have the plane restored. It has four Rolls-Royce Merlin engines, but the group will need to have only three of them rebuilt. I magine their surprise and delight when they broke open the packing cases and found that the fourth engine was sweet as honey----still in perfect condition. A colony of bees had turned the engine into a hive and it was totally preserved in beeswax!

2 worth rescuing,
3 The French authorities had the plane packaged and moved in parts back to France.
