联合国是一个世界性、综合性的政府间国际组织，现有192个会员国。

1945 10月24日，中华民国、法兰西、苏维埃社会主义共和国联盟、大不列颠及北爱尔兰联合王国、美利坚合众国和其他多数签字国递交了批准书后，宪章开始生效，联合国正式成立。

根据联合国宪章的规定，联合国的宗旨是维护国际和平与安全；发展国际间以尊重各国人民平等权利及自决原则为基础的友好关系；进行国际合作，以解决国际间经济、社会、文化和人道主义性质的问题，并且促进对于全体人类的人权和基本自由的尊重；作为协调各国行动的中心，以达到上述共同目的。

北大西洋公约组织是美国与西欧、北美主要发达国家为实现防卫协作而建立的一个国际军事集团组织。

1949年4月4日美国与加拿大、英国、法国、比利时、荷兰、卢森堡、丹麦、挪威、冰岛、葡萄牙、意大利共12国在华盛顿签订了《北大西洋公约》，标志着北约正式成立。

四、联合国的建立1945年10月24日，当五个联合国安全理事会会员国（联合国宪章第23条规定为中华民国、法兰西、苏维埃社会主义共和国联盟、大不列颠及北爱尔兰联合王国及美利坚合众国组成）以及其它46个签字国的大多数成员国批准了《联合国宪章》后，联合国作为实体组织正式成立。

美国参议院于1945年7月28日，以89对两票通过确认《联合国宪章》。

在1945年12月，参议院和众议院一致要求联合国总部设在美国。

1946年1月10日至2月14日，第一届联合国大会第一阶段会议在伦敦举行。

51个创始会员国的代表参加了这次会议，联合国组织系统正式开始运作。

1949年，美国的提议被采纳，并于1950年，联合国总部大楼在纽约市完工，使用了来自小约翰·洛克菲勒的850万美元捐款，并于1951年1月9日开始运作。

大会1993年4月8日A/RES/47/225号决议决定接纳该国为联合国会员国，在该国国名引起的争端解决之前，该国在联合国内暂时称为 "前南斯拉夫的马其顿共和国"。

南斯拉夫联盟共和国由大会2000年11月1日A/RES/55/12号决议接纳为联合国会员国。
