Lesson 54 The first aeroplane flight
Before 1903, many people tried to build a machine that would
fly through the air. They studied birds and kites carefully,
hoping to find clues to the problem of flying. They knew that
they needed wings to lift them into the air, but how could they
make a motor small enough and light enough to power their plane?
In 1903, two brothers from Ohio, in the United States, made
the first successful powered flight. Their names were Wilbur
and Orville Wright. They had a small bicycle shop in Dayton,
Ohio where they worked on their idea for a flying machine. They
knew that they needed a light engine, so they built one
themselves. They also designed and made their own propellers.
On 17th December, 1903, the Wright brothers went to Kitty
Hawk, a place on the coast of North Carolina. It was a good place
Lesson54 Sticky fingers
🌻Part 1: Text
After breakfast, I sent the children to school and then I went to market. It was still
early when I returned home. The children were at school, my husband was at work
and the house was quiet. So I decided to make some tarts for tea. In a short time I
was busy mixing butter and flour and my hands were soon covered with sticky pastry.
At exactly that moment, the telephone rang. Nothing could have been more
annoying. I picked up the receiver between two sticky fingers and was dismayed
when I recognized the voice of Mrs Bates. It took me ten minutes to persuade her to
ring back later. At last I hung up the receiver. What a mess! There was pastry on my
fingers, on the telephone, and on the door-knobs. I had no sooner got back to the
kitchen than the door-bell rang loud enough to wake the dead. This time it was the

Lesson 54
The Great Escape
Every summer, my family and I go on a camping trip to the
mountains. We always look forward to it because it's a chance for
us to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of city life and
reconnect with nature.
Last year, we decided to explore a new camping spot that we
had heard a lot about. The journey there was long, but the scenic
drive made it worth it. As we arrived, we were greeted by the lush
greenery and the fresh mountain air.
We set up our tents near a crystal-clear stream and spent the
afternoon hiking and exploring the area. The kids were thrilled to
discover a hidden waterfall, and we all took turns having a dip in
the cool water.
As the sun started to set, we gathered around the campfire
and cooked dinner. The crackling of the fire, the smell of roasting
Lesson 54
1. d
2. b
根据课⽂第6-12⾏,可以判断只有b. the writer was interrupted several times while making meat pies (当作者做⾁馅时⼏
所以a. the, b. A, c. This 都不对。
4. b
Nothing could have been more annoying a. the more
不是级;b. more 只能⽤于⽐较级;c. most 前⾯缺少定冠词,不能表⽰级;只有d. the most 是级形式,最符合题⽬意思,所以选d.
6. b
7. a
8. d
a. joining them(连接它们,加⼊他们的⾏列);
