Renshi Junior Middle School Xie Changjiang

Good morning ladies and gentlemen,

It’s my pleasure to take part in this competition. My topic is Unit 7 Would you mind

turning down the music? I would like to talk about my talking design from these four parts.

One is the Analysis of the teaching materials. Two is the Analysis of the teaching and

learning methods. Three is the Analysis of the teaching steps. Four is the Layout of the

blackboard. OK, here we go.

Part One: Analysis of the teaching materials

Unit 7 Would you mind turning down the music? Section A is from Go for it, book 4.

This unit mainly talks about making complaints and requests politely, and make apologies.

This unit is the further study of the learnt units, and it’s also the base of learning the

following units. Students can learn not only the knowledge, but also the good manners of

being a polite person. So it’s important to learn this unit well.

1. Teaching aims

According to the New Standard English Course and the fact of my students, I think

the teaching aims should be :

(1)Knowledge aim:

Learn to use the new word 、phrases and sentence structures. Such as mind, not at

all ,turn down ,right way ,dish ,yard ,help sb. with sth. And Would you mind doing…?

Could you please do…?

(2)Ability aim:

From learning this class, the students can make complaints and requests politely and

make apologies. And the students should improve their skills of listening, speaking ,

2 reading and writing.

(3)Moral and emotion aim:

Inspire the students to have the thirst for knowledge. And train them to have good

manners to treat people politely. This is important in their daily lives.

2. Teaching importance:

(1)The usage of the important words and phrases. Such as could, would, mind doing.

(2)The usage of the sentence structures, Would you mind doing…? Could you please

do…?

3. Teaching difficulties:

(1)Culture background. Although the students have been learning English for about two

years, they know nothing about the western cultures.

(2)They may not use “mind doing” and “not at all” correctly.

(3)While listening, the strange words and the speed of speaking are the most difficult.

Part Two: Analysis of teaching and learning methods.

According the teaching importance and difficulties, and the fact of the students, I will

make the students the hosts, I am just the guide. I’ll use the creating and cooperating

methods. Students will work not only individually, but also in pairs, groups and teams. And

they will read, write, speak and listen.

Part Three: Analysis of teaching steps.

Step One: Activity (1a)

Look at the picture in 1a, just imagine you are the girl talking on the phone. Describe

what is happening, speak to yourself and write it down. This is to preview the learnt

knowledge, such as the present perfect tense, the present progressive tense. And it’s also to

preview the new knowledge.

3 Step Two: Reading competition

Students read aloud all the sentences in Section A as fast as possible. After reading,

the students should underline the important words , phrases and sentence structures. Some

students will write them on the blackboard. Then the students will make sentences with

them.

Step Three: Pair work( 2a)

The students have learnt how to make complaints and apologies, we need further

study. Look at the five pictures and sentences in 2a on page53, make complaints and

apologies with the partner. The purpose is to deepen understanding the sentences structures,

and also to train the students to have a good habit of using the knowledge after learning. At

that time they will find it difficult to make apologies without saying not at all.

Step Four: Team work

Discuss with the classmates about how to make apologies, and write the answers

down. Some students will write them on the blackboard. The others should complete.

I will guide the students to realize the culture difference between China and the

English-speaking countries.

Step Five: Practical Exercise

Just imagine you are in the third floor, you’re playing basketball in the classroom.

And the students from the class beneath your classroom go up to you. What will he say?

And what will you say? There will be two situations. One is they will be polite, the other is

they are rude. But we are happy to see the happy ending. Make conversations about

making complaints and apologies with your partner. Then some pairs will act out in the

front of the classroom. Through this activity, the students will learn to treat people politely.

Step Six: Listening Practice (1b 2a 2b)
