Trapped in a mine

1、...rescue operations are proving difficult.

prove v. 证明

例句:This information has proved useful to a great many people.

2、They intend to bring the men up in a special capsule.

intend v.

This is my job and I intend to do it.

3、As it is, they have been drilling for sixteen hours and they still

have a long way to go.

as it is 事实上,实际上,类似的表达还有 as it turned out, as things

stand.

例句:To create a new market the magazine had to be brilliant. As

it turned out, it wasn't. As things stand, the rural areas bear the cost of raising children

to working age.

My friend was knocked down and could have been killed. As it

was, he suffered

severe back injuries.

4、Meanwhile, a microphone...has enabled the men to keep in

touch with their

closest relatives.

enable sb. to do sth.

This would enable me to go to Canada.

keep in touch with sb.

Please drop in when you can, I'd like to keep in touch.

5、Though they are running out of food and drink, the men are

cheerful...

run out of sth.

We were rapidly running out of money.

If they are not brought to the surface soon they may lose their

lives.

If explosives are used, vibrations will cause the roof of the mine

to collapse.

A perfect alibi

1、My employer will confirm that I was there on time.

She asked me if it was my car and I confirmed that it was.

on time 准时

例句:We all caught the train and we all got here on time.

2、And you didn't notice anything unusual?

He's got something important to tell us.

3、...on the morning of the murder

morning 前通常用介词 in, 但要是特指某一个早晨,就要用介词 on,这个规则同样适用于afternoon, evening, night, day。

例句:She usually starts off at 7.00 in the morning, but on the

morning of that

examination, she left half an hour earlier.

4、It broke down at Ferngreen station and was taken off the line.

Garages never seemed to be open when the car broke

down.

The talks broke down over differences on doctrine. 5、’At the time the murder was committed, I was traveling on the

8 o'clock train to London, ‘ said the man.

The man said that at the time the murder was committed, he was

traveling on the

8 o'clock train to London.

Ann said, 'I will get back next week.'

Ann said that she would get back the next week.

She said, 'Are you busy, John?'

She asked John whether he was busy.

He asked me, ''Where did you buy this Chinese-English

dictionary?'

He asked me where I had bought that Chinese-English

dictionary.
