1.A: Now, today we will talk about friendship. what do you think about friendship?

B: Everyone needs friendship. No one can sail the ocean of life single handed. We need help from, and also give help to, others.

A: Yes, i agree with you. In the modern age, people attach more importance to relations and connections. A man of charisma has many friends. His power lies in his ability to give. B: The term, friend, covers a wide range of raeanings. It can be a nodding acquaintance, a comrade, a confident, a partner, a playmate, a brother, an intimate etc.

A: As life is full of strife and conflict, we need friends to support and help as out of difficulties. Our frinods give us warnings against danger. True friends share not only joy but, more often than not, they share sorrow.

B: With friendship, life is happy and harmonious. Without friendship, life is hostile and unfortunate. I have friends in the rank and file. Some are rich and in power. Some are low and common. Some are like myself, working as a teacher, reading and writing and content with the simple life we have.

A: To many of my friends, I know what to treasure, what to tolerate and what to share, I will never forget my old friends and keep making new friends. I will not he cold and indifferent to the poor friends and will show concern for them, even if it is only a comforting word.

2.A:Do you have any idea about the proverb “When in Rome,do as the Romes do”?

B:There is no denying that we should do as the Romans do when in Rome. This is an accumulated experience we inherit from our forefathers, and now it is still widely applied to our daily life. The old saying tells us vividly that wherever we are, we should do everything according to local customs.

A:You are right! The proverb has profound impact on our interactions with people from other cultures.Do you have some experience about it?

B:Last year, my neighbor, Xiao Wang and I went to the U.S. to travel. One day we were lost and it seemed we would never find our way back to our hotel. Suddenly an elderly lady came near us. Excited and trying to be polite, Xiao Wang approached her and asked, "Excuse me, how old are you?" This polite opening remark in Chinese culture made the lady stare at him in surprise, because age is a taboo in Western cultures. Seeing the embarrassment, I asked, "Beautiful weather, isn t it?" Of course the lady said "Yes" and happily told us the way to our hotel.

A:A lesson that can be drawn from the above example is obvious. Whether we know the local customs will play a crucial role in our relationship with others. More importantly, doing everything as the locals do will help us make more friends and avoid troubles.
