Once upon a time, there was a king who loved to play chess. He invited the best chess player
in the kingdom to play a game with him. The winner would get a great reward.
The chess game lasted for several hours. In the end, the king won. He said, “You have lost the
game, but I will still give you a reward. Ask for whatever you want.”
The chess player replied, “Your Majesty, I ask for just one grain(just one small piece) of rice
for the first square of the chessboard. For the second square, I ask for two grains. For the
third, four grains, and so on, doubling the number of grains for each square on the board.”
The king laughed and said, “Is that all you want? Such a small reward? Of course, I will give
you that!”
The king ordered his servants to bring the rice. They put one grain on the first square, two
grains on the second square, four grains on the third square…
