牛津高中英语模块二unit3readingthecurseofthemummy阅读原文牛津高中英语模块二Unit3Reading: The Curse of the mummyHoward Carter is one of the most famous explorers the world has ever known. He was brave and loved to visit and explore new places. During his life, he discovered many amazing things.Howard Carter did not go to school but learnt to draw from his father, who was an artist. He was bright and curious about the world outside his hometown. In 1891, at the age of 17, he set sail for Alexandria, Egypt. By the 1920s he had become an explorer searching for the tombs of the Egyptian kings. He found several important ones. Inside the tombs he discovered a great fortune in jewels, gold along with the preserved bodies of dead kings. These preserved bodies are known as mummies. In 1922, Howard Carter made his most amazing discovery of all, in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt. He had received money from Lord Carnarvon, a British man who was very interested in Egypt. Carter?s team wasworking at a place near a city called Luxor. There, they came across the tomb of King Tutankhamun. It was the most important tomb that had ever been found. …The tomb contained more treasure than any of us had ever seen before, as well as the mummy of the king,? said Carter. “After we looked into the tomb, we closed it and hid its entrance. We wanted to study the tomb later when we had more time. Afterwards, all of its contents would go into a museum. However, not long after the discovery, people in Carter?steam began to fall ill and died. Upon their entering the tomb, Carter?s lucky pet bir d, which he had left in Cairo, was swallowed by a snake. Then, a few months after Carter had opened the tomb, Lord Carnarvon, who was also present when the tomb was opened, fell ill with a fever and died in Egypt. At the moment of Carnarnon?s death, the li ghts went out in Cairo, the capital of Egypt. Back in England his dog died at the same time.George Gould, a friend of Carnarvon, went to Egypt after hearing of his death. He too visited the tomb, only to catch a high fever the next day. Twelve hours later,he was dead. Carter?s secretary, Richard Bethell, died of heart trouble four months after the tomb was opened. Arthur Mace, another member of the team, also died shortly after the discovery.Within seven years, 21 people who had something to do with the opening of the tomb died. Howard Carter, however, lived on until the age of 65. Some people say the deaths were just coincidence. Others believe that they were in connection with a mummy?s curse, as a punishment for those who enter the resting place of the dead. However, still others believe that there is a scientific explanation. Inside the tombs, there are many viruses. When a tomb is opened, fresh air disturbs the viruses. If breathed in, they can result in illness or even death. Today, when scientists examine mummies, they wear special clothing to protect themselves. What is certain, though, is that “the curse of the mummy” remains a riddle to this day.。
必修第二册Unit3阅读理解题组——练速度(35 mins)阅读理解AThere is a very special wolf that lives in Africa. They are actually called the African wild dogs,or painted dogs. These animals live in open woodlands,or in the plains of Africa.Today, however, most of the animals can be found in the eastern or southern Africa. These animals are beautiful. They have rounded ears instead of pointed like most dogs, and they have four toes on each of their four feet, also a unique characteristic because other dogs have five.Their fur is always different from each other. The fur is usually a combination of black, brown, red and white, and sometimes even yellow. No wonder they're called painted dogs. The African wild dog is a very social animal. They live in groups and have numbers from five to about twenty. The members of a group are always very close to one another. They communicate in their own language or body language. When someone is very old or sick, the others will help, and they are willing to share the food with the elders and with those who are weak, which is what we should learn from. The family does everything together, from raising young and sleeping together,to hunting. When they hunt, they will work together using teamwork to kill animals that are larger than them. They sometimes hunt farm animals. This is unfortunate, because both poachers, and people who own farms shoot the painted dogs who are just trying to survive. Before, there used to be many large groups throughout the land, but now the African wild dog is very rare. They are also losing their population because of their own loss of habitat.1.From the passage we learn that the African wild dog .A.lives in the north of AfricaB.has sixteen toes altogetherC.has pointed ears like most dogsD.lives in forests in groups2.Why do African wild dogs get the name “painted dogs”?A.They all have colorful fur.B.The dogs in the same group are of different colors.C.Artists love to paint them in different colors.D.None of them has the same color.3.According to the author, what should we learn from African wild dogs?A.They always do everything together.B.They help the sick, the elderly and the weak.C.They are always very close to one another.D.They communicate in their own language.4.Which of the following is NOT the reason why African wild dogs are becoming very rare?A.Poachers kill some of them.B.They are short of food sometimes.C.They are losing their habitat.D.Farmers shoot some of them.5.Where could this passage probably be found?A.The Travelers.B.Fashion Weekly.C.Animal World.D.Star Magazine.B(2021·天津南开一模)At age 22,Hikari Oberman has already been a lifeguard for four st week,Oberman talked to The Garden Island about how he helped save lives during a recent rescue. On Dec.30,Oberman and his co-worker Cope were parked in their truck at Anini Beach when two workers ran up to them and said,“I think someone's getting stuck in the channel!”“I grab our equipment. We start rolling out down there,” Oberman said. When he got out there,Oberman found a stand-up paddler,a man in his late 30s,struggling against the current, with an elderly man holding tightly to the back of the paddleboard. He said,“My co-worker grabs the stand-up guy.Meanwhile,I'm stuck with the older man.”Normally,Oberman said he would pull the paddler up,lay him on the surfboard, climb up behind and paddle from there. He tried that technique at first and quickly realized it was not a practicable option. They were not going anywhere.Waves hit against the extremely sharp reef very hard about 30 yards behind them, and the current was pulling them into it.“It's right behind us.If I stop paddling,we're definitely going to be in that zone,”he said. They started making progress toward the reef, where they might safely be able to climb out.Oberman just focused on forward movement. After about five minutes—“even though it felt longer”—Oberman said his partner had gotten the paddleboarder safely to shore and started coming back out to help.“I look back, and I see our jet ski. He's finally coming in the channel. We're not going to have to worry about that now.”It was a good rescue. When asked what it felt like to save someone's life,Oberman responded,“I love it!That's why we do it!”But as exciting as it might be to perform a big rescue,he explained that the most important part of his job is to keep people from getting into trouble in the first place.6.How did Hikari Oberman react to the two workers' cry for help?A.He dragged the two workers to his truck.B.He rolled the equipment to the channel.C.He called his co-worker to run to the beach.D.He made his way to the channel without delay.7.What does the underlined part “They were not going anywhere.”in Paragraph 6 probably mean?A.They were unwilling to go anywhere.B.They were waiting others for help.C.They were being pulled by the current.D.They were going to give up.8.What did the author want to show by mentioning the waves?A.It was the perfect time to surf.B.The reef was so hard to damage.C.The situation was extremely serious.D.The paddlers were pushed forward.9.Which of the following things contributed more to the rescue?A.The jet ski.B.The current.C.The paddleboard.D.The truck.10.What is the author's attitude towards Oberma's job?A.Skeptical.B.Tolerate.C.Approving.D.Frightened.C(2019·天津卷)Would you BET on the future of this man?He is 53 years old. Most of his adult life has been a losing struggle against debt and misfortune.A war injury has made his left hand stop functioning, and he has often been in prison.Driven by heaven-knows-what motives,he determines to write a book. The book turns out to be one that has appealed to the world for more than 350 years. That former prisoner was Cervantes, and the book was Don Quixote(《堂吉诃德》).And the story poses an interesting question:why do some people discover new vitality and creativity to the end of their days, while others go to seed long before? We've all known people who run out of steam before they reach life's halfway mark.I'm not talking about those who fail to get to the top.We can't all get there.I'm talking about people who have stopped learning on growing because they have adopted the fixed attitudes and opinions that all too often come with passing years. Most of us,in fact, progressively narrow the variety of our lives. We succeed in our field of specialization and then become trapped in it.Nothing surprises us.We lose our sense of wonder. But,if we are willing to learn, the opportunities are everywhere. The things we learn in maturity seldom involve information and skills. We learn to bear with the things we can't change. We learn to avoid self-pity.We learn that however much we try to please, some people are never going to love us—an idea that troubles at first but is eventually relaxing. With high motivation and enthusiasm,we can keep on learning. Then we will know how important it is to have meaning in our life. However,we can achieve meaning only if we have made a commitment to something larger than our own little egos(自我),whether to loved ones,to fellow humans,to work,or to some moral concept. Many of us equate(视……等同于)“commitment” with such “caring” occupations as teaching and nursing. But doing any ordinary job as well as one can is in itself an admirable commitment.People who work toward such excellence—whether they are driving a truck,or running a store—make the world better just by being the kind of people they are. They've learned life's most valuable lesson.11.The passage starts with the story of Cervantes to show that .A.loss of freedom stimulates one's creativityB.age is not a barrier to achieving one's goalC.misery inspires a man to fight against his fateD.disability cannot stop a man's pursuit of success12.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 3 probably mean?A.End one's struggle for liberty.B.Waste one's energy taking risks.C.Miss the opportunity to succeed.D.Lose the interest to continue learning.13.What could be inferred from Paragraph 4?A.Those who dare to try often get themselves trapped.B.Those who tend to think back can hardly go ahead.C.Opportunity favors those with a curious mind.D.Opportunity awaits those with a cautious mind.14.What does the author intend to tell us in Paragraph 5?A.A tough man can tolerate suffering.B.A wise man can live without self-pity.C.A man should try to satisfy people around him.D.A man should learn suitable ways to deal with life.15.What is the author's purpose in writing the passage?A.To provide guidance on leading a meaningful adult life.B.To stress the need of shouldering responsibilities at work.C.To state the importance of generating motivation for learning.D.To suggest a way of pursuing excellence in our lifelong career.DMany people around me make a difference to the world on a daily basis—being kind in unexpected ways and sharing the generosity of their lives with others.I,like many of them, volunteer some of my time in order to give back just a little of what I am so blessed to have.I volunteered to go to Guatemala with an eyeglasses team from International Relief Teams—an organization I have supported in other ways for many years. Our team went to a small town in Guatemala,San Augustin. We set up our tables and packages of pre-made glasses in the dirty courtyard of a clinic, put up the Snellen chart(an eye chart) on a wall, and began our work.Young and old people came from many of the surrounding towns. Most had never received an eye exam before. They waited for hours patiently in the sun, never complaining. If we could help them out, their thankfulness for a simple pair of glasses was overwhelming. Some only left with eye drops or sunglasses, even so these people expressed their gratitude sincerely. All of them were very generous with blessings and smiles. We heard over and over from people who knew their eyes needed help but they had not gone to a doctor because it was too expensive,or had not got the glasses they needed for the same reason. It's so easy to overlook how much difference the volunteers' small actions can make to the lives of people in Guatemala.Glasses in my country are so easily available, but to people in Guatemala, they are not.As those who could give them a hand,we watched their lives change. What a gift sight is—and what a difference being able to see clearly makes! Here,we'd like you to join us and take action to help people in need. And every day, those actions change lives. No action is too small;no action is ever wasted.16.According to Paragraph 1,the author is .A.a major host of good deedsB.a sponsor of an eyeglasses teamC.a generous neighbor in his communityD.a supporter of International Relief Teams17.What do we know about the volunteers in the eyeglasses team?A.Their working environment is simple.B.They are medical experts nationwide.C.Their initial preparation is inadequate.D.They have served people in Guatemala for years.18.Which of the following words can be used to describe most people in Guatemala?A.Kind and helpful.B.Poor but grateful.C.Considerate and patient.D.Knowledgeable but unhealthy.19.What can we infer from Paragraph 4?A.Rome was not built in a day.B.Actions speak louder than words.C.Don't look down upon those less fortunate.D.Don't take what you have today for granted.20.What is the author's purpose in writing the passage?A.To urge people to protect their eyes.B.To ask people to volunteer in Guatemala.C.To call on people to do good deeds in daily life.D.To show the difficult life of people in Guatemala.必修第二册Unit3阅读理解题组——练速度1.B解析推理判断题。
