Unit 5 The power of natureWarming-up and reading practiceTeaching aims and demands:1.To know about the power of nature which causes serious disasters ,especially volcano eruption. Besides talk about them in groups and realize how powerful they are and how powerless the human being are facing them.2.To test whether some students are suitable for volcanologist and evaluate or predict its job in groups.3.To practise reading tactics -- skimming. Scanning . intensive reading based on relative reading tasks.4.To learn some useful expressions and put them into practice, make full of them in and after class in the end.5.To be a volcanologist and contribute to it.Teaching difficulty and importance:1.To talk about disasters caused by nature and realize how powerful they are and how powerless the human being are facing them in groups.2.To practise reading tactics -- skimming . scanning and intensive reading based on relative reading tasks.3.To learn some useful expressions and make full of them in and after class.Teaching strategy:Task-- exploring lesson in pairs and groupsTeaching schedule:Four-teaching and learning periodTeaching assistance:Multi-media and exercise bookTeaching procedure:1.Lead-inWith the aid of multi-media , teacher shows students some pictures about naturaldisasters ,especially volcano eruption, and make them realize how powerful these disasters are , then encourage them to discuss in what way human beings can protect themselves in groups. If they cann’ t express themselves, they may as well talk in Chinese. In then end, select one of the best teams to conclude its discussion for the rest .2.Present and approachAs for volcanoes , it is the second part to make them clearer , first of all, show some pictures, then, let students glance through the questionnaire in the text book and test whether he or she is fit for a volcanologist or not. In addition, inspire students with a question “what quality do you think a volcanologist should own?”, then encourage them to discuss in pairs within 2 minutes, which seem a prediction of text. And it is time to start the lesson- an exciting job .the first step is to glance though the text one by one paragraph to search the main idea for each part within 5 minutes, and try to conclude the main idea of passage (exercise in learning scheme) .if necessary ,especially during concluding, students can discuss in pairs. The second step is to read the text carefully and complete the tasks in learning scheme. And this part is to recognize more details, which means taking more time. Next , the third step is to read intensively and try to summarize the text(in learning scheme), which can be homework after class. What ismore .students have to pick out unknown items during reading. And the second period ,the fourth step is to explain the important language points and put them into practice. The final step is to conclude and discuss, as for the discussion,the task is in the textbook, students are encouraged to discuss in groups and choose the two best groups to show their opinions3.Conclude: focus on the important language points4.Assign: in learning scheme plus exercisebook。
