World leaders, representatives of international organizations and experts have been mourning the death on Saturday of Chinese scientist Yuan Longping, whose lifelong research in high-yield rice varieties help feed people around the world."Today, we mourn the passing of a true food hero. Chinese scientist Yuan Longping saved millions of people from hunger by developing the first hybrid rice strains," the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs tweeted."He passed away today at 91 (due to illness) but his legacy and his mission to end hunger lives on," it said.Having spent over five decades in hybrid rice research, Yuan, an academician with the Chinese Academy of Engineering, has helped China work a great wonder - feeding nearly one-fifth of the world's population with less than 9 percent of the world's total land.Qu Dongyu, Director-General of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, on Saturday expressed his sadness over Yuan's passing."Deeply saddened by the death of Prof. Yuan Longping, my dear Master. He devoted his life to the research of hybrid rice, helping billions achieve food security," wrote Qu on his Twitter account."You were my Inspiration. May you rest in peace," Qu added.Born in Beijing in 1930, Yuan succeeded in cultivating the world's first high-yield hybrid rice strain in 1973, which was later grown on a large scale in China and other countries to substantially raise output."We have learned with great sadness the passing of the Chinese academician, father of hybrid rice, professor Yuan Longping," said Fanomezantsoa Lucien Ranarivelo, minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of Madagascar, in a condolence message on behalf of the ministry and in his own name published Saturday on Facebook. In Madagascar, the output of rice was raised from 3 tons to 10 tons per hectare, thanks to Yuan's fruitful research and a hybrid rice R&D center in the town of Malagasy co-built with China National Hybrid Rice R&D Center, an institution he founded.Nowadays, sponsored by the center's training program, Madagascan technicians can travel to the Chinese central city of Changsha, where Yuan's team headquartered, and receive tailored advice.Otilia Tomo, director of Mozambique Agricultural Research Institute, said that during a visit to China in 2019, she was impressed by varieties of saline-alkali tolerant or higher-yield rice that Yuan's team presented.Mozambique was also challenged by the task of increasing yields, said Tomo, adding that in 2020, three varieties which her team brought from China and tested in Mozambique have delivered "satisfactory results."The results are single-season and preliminary, noted Tomo, "but I can say they are promising," and her institute will carry on the studies to fight hunger, she said in an interview with Xinhua.Yuan's passing is not only sad news to the Chinese people, but also a great loss to humanity, said Shahzad Ali Malik, CEO of Guard Agriculture Research and Services Co., Ltd in Pakistan.Speaking of his first meeting with Yuan in 1998, Malik said the scientist had told him "businessmen usually wish for a speedier benefit through their investment, yet seed-breeding is not an industry with quick profit, there may even be no profit."profit."The talks showcase Yuan's high hopes of serious interest in rice-breeding from a potential partner, he noted.Later on, the two sides have undergone two decades of cooperation in developing hybrid strains, and Pakistan's rice planting has ushered in an era of great economic and social benefits, helping many in the rural area to shake off poverty, according to Malik.Ivo Mello, a renowned rice expert in Brazil, was also saddened by the news of Yuan's passing. "His legacy will be remembered for generations," said Mello, technical director of the Rice Institute of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil's leading rice-producing state.Ramping up research input to develop higher-yield hybrid rice strains is a matter of great importance to countries with a huge population, such as China and India, and more broadly, to the eradication of global hunger, said Mello, whose institute has for years been promoting the growing of hybrid rice in Brazil.By early 1970s, most biologists and agronomists around the world believed that a sustainable way of cross-breeding robust and high-yield rice varieties was a mission impossible, yet Yuan, with his research, proved the opposite and has since become a science hero of his motherland, wrote the German public broadcast ARD program "Tagesschau" in an obituary on Saturday.【词汇解析】1. mourn v. 悼念,哀悼,为……哀痛mourn sb's death/ loss/ passingShe still mourns the death of her husband.她仍然在为丈夫的死⽽哀伤。

我最敬佩的人一一袁隆平英语作文高中The Person I Admire Most - Yuan LongpingDo you know who Yuan Longping is? He's this really cool scientist who helped make way more food for people in China and around the world! I learned about him in school and I think he's amazing. Let me tell you why I admire him so much.First of all, Yuan Longping worked super duper hard his whole life to become a top expert on rice. That's the main food that people eat in China and lots of other countries too. But there wasn't enough rice for everyone back in the 1900s. Too many people didn't have sufficient food to eat. That's just awful!Yuan Longping decided he wanted to fix that major problem. Can you imagine how many lives he helped by creating more rice? It's mind-blowing when you think about it. He's like a real-life superhero, but instead of stopping bank robbers, he stopped world hunger! The way Yuan Longping did this was through science and patience. He spent decades researching rice plants and experimenting with new ways to grow more rice. He wanted to create brand new varieties of rice that produced way more grainper plant. That's amazing creativity to even think of trying something like that. But it wasn't easy at all. Yuan Longping failed over and over again as he tried cross-breeding different rice varieties. I can't even count how many times his experiments didn't work out. Most people probably would have just given up after failing so much. Not Yuan Longping though! He never stopped believing he could develop better rice.Year after year, he got back up and tried new methods when the old ones failed. Sometimes the rice plants would get diseases. Sometimes they wouldn't pollinate right. Sometimes the grains were too small. But Yuan Longping didn't let any of that stop him. He was determined to make his dream a reality no matter how long it took. Finally, after working pretty much his whole life, Yuan Longping's big breakthrough happened in the 1970s. He was able to successfully breed the first varieties of hybrid rice. This was the super rice that produced way more grain than regular rice plants! The hybrid rice made such a big difference that China was able to grow a lot more food for its huge population. Famine and starvation became way less common after that. But Yuan Longping didn't stop there. He spent the next few decades continuing to make the hybrid rice even better. He bred new varieties that could grow in different climates and soil types. That way, hybrid rice could spread to more countries and help feed even more people worldwide. By the 2000s, his hybrid rice had made it all the way to America, India, and Africa too! When I think about how many lives were improved because of Yuan Longping's hard work, it's just incredible. Some people estimate his hybrid rice was able to provide enough food for60-80 million more people per year. That means he personally benefited hundreds of millions of human beings! How awesome is that? Not only did Yuan Longping basically solve world hunger (or at least made a huge dent in it), but he did it through smarts and perseverance rather than violence. He used his mind to be creative and make the world better through science. To me, that's the best way anyone could possibly help others.I admire Yuan Longping because he inspires me to work really hard towards important goals, even when it's extremely difficult. He shows that you can't just give up on your dreams when you fail at first. You have to get back up, try a new approach, and keep pushing forward with determination like hedid. If he hadn't kept going despite all his failed experiments, his hybrid rice may have never existed and all those people could have kept going hungry.Yuan Longping's life story motivates me to study hard, be innovative and creatively solve big problems that can make a positive impact. Even though I'm still a kid, I want to grow up and help make the world better like he did. I don't know if I'll ever be a famous scientist or anything, but I'm going to work really hard and never give up when I face obstacles. That's the best way I can think of to honor Yuan Longping's amazing legacy. So those are the main reasons why Yuan Longping is my biggest hero and the person I admire most. He dedicated his whole life to solving world hunger through hybrid rice. He worked tirelessly for decades, failing over and over until he finally succeeded in creating super productive rice plants. And his creation helped provide food for millions upon millions of hungry people across the globe. To me, that's the best thing any human being could possibly achieve - creatively using their mind to improve the lives of others on a huge scale through hard work and perseverance. I'll never forget Yuan Longping's inspirational life story!。

袁隆平英语作文高中选修二第一单元Yuan Longping: The Seed SuperheroYou know how superheroes have awesome powers like flying or super strength? Well, Yuan Longping had an awesome superpower too - he could create new kinds of super rice! Instead of using laser vision or a magic lasso, he used science to help feed millions of people around the world. Pretty cool, right?Yuan Longping was born in 1930 in Beijing, China. When he was just a kid, his dad taught him all about plants and agriculture. Yuan loved learning about crops and dreamed of becoming a plant scientist when he grew up. A PIONEER FOR ALL PEOPLE
Although he is one of China's
most famous scientists, Yuan
Longping considers himself a farmer,
for he works the land to do his
research. Indeed, his sunburnt face and arms and his slim, strong body are just like those of millions of Chinese farmers, for whom he has struggled for the past five decades. Dr Yuan Longping grows what is called super hybrid rice. In 1974, he became the first agricultural pioneer in the world to grow rice that has a high output. This special strain of rice makes it possible to produce one-third more of the crop in the same fields. Now more than 60% of the rice produced in China each year is from this hybrid strain.
Born into a poor farmer's family in 1930, Dr Yuan graduated from Southwest Agricultural College in 1953. Since then, finding ways to grow more rice has been his life goal. As a young man, he saw the great need for increasing the rice output. At that time, hunger was a disturbing problem in many parts of the countryside. Dr Yuan searched for a way to increase rice harvests without expanding the area of the fields. In 1950, Chinese farmers could produce only fifty million tons of rice. In a recent harvest, however, nearly two hundred
million tons of rice was produced. These increased harvests mean that 22% of the world's people are fed from just 7% of the farmland in China. Dr Yuan is now circulating his knowledge in India, Vietnam and many other less developed countries to increase their rice harvests. Thanks to his research, the UN has more tools in the battle to rid the world of hunger. Using his hybrid rice, farmers are producing harvests twice as large as before.
Dr Yuan is quite satisfied with his life. However, he doesn't care about being famous. He feels it gives him less freedom to do his research. He would much rather keep time for his hobbles. He enjoys listening to violin music, playing mah-jong, swimming and reading. Spending money on himself or leading a comfortable life also means very little to him. Indeed, he believes that a person with too much money has more rather than fewer troubles. He therefore gives millions of yuan to equip others for their research in agriculture.
Just dreaming for things, however, costs nothing. Long ago Dr yuan had a dream about rice plants as tall as sorghum. Each ear of rice was as big as an ear of corn and each grain of rice was as huge as a peanut. Dr Yuan awoke from his dream with the hope of producing a kind of rice that could feed more people. Now, many years later, Dr Yuan has another dream: to export his rice so that it can be grown around the globe. One dream is not always enough, especially for a
person who loves and cares for his people.。
