Unit1 2In Maslow's opinion, there is a hierarchy of universal wants and needs found in every human being. Ultimately at the top of the hierarchy there are the needs for self-actualization or self-realization, that is, the need to develop one's own potential, the need for aesthetic stimulation, the need to create or to build one's own personality and character, etc. Then tourism turns out to be a good solution, since it provides ample chances to satisfy most of the needs, and the needs, in turn, constitute major motivational factors for people to travel and go on vacation. Even "self-actualization" may be achieved when a long-held dream comes true on a certain trip.
4 Another important motivator is connected with culture and curiosity, which is expressed by the desire to know about other places or countries and to search for all kinds of experiences. No one seems to doubt that travel broadens the mind. It was the desire for knowledge that was the reason for the growth of the Grand Tour. Today this desire is widely encouraged by modern mass media and communications such as television and airplane, which find their ways into every corner of the world. After one has traveled to a particular place, he tends to be more interested in news items or television programs about it. By learning about other cultures one can also discover his own, and thus truly enriches his mind.
10 The improvement in transportation has facilitated travel on a large scale. The explosion of railway and automobile travel was followed by dynamic improvements in air service. Today, in many countries, elaborate road systems have been built so that a person can go from border to border or even across national borders in the case of Europe without being affected by a single red light or two-way traffic on the same roadway. The vast network of roads and air connections and the mass production of the car at a price many people can afford have led to the development of a tourist industry unmatched in history. With increasing affluence and leisure, and a relative decrease in cost of travel, the growth of the travel industry will surely continue.10 交通的改进在较大规模上促进了旅游。
Unit2 1 When most of us think of a tourist, we have in mind a person on vacation to visit a distant location, to see the sights, to visit friends and relatives and to do little else but relax or participate in leisure activities such as fishing or sports. But tourists are more than vacation travelers. There are many other types of tourists, such as business people, convention delegates, pilgrims and other travelers.
2 As tourism is the movement of people, it is necessary to define this major component of tourism-the tourist-before producing a definition for tourism. The word TOURIST is derivedfrom the term "tour" which, according to Webster's International Dictionary (1961), means "a journey in which one returns to the starting point; a circular trip usually for business, pleasure or education during which various places are visited and for which an itinerary is usually planned". Accordingly, a tourist is "one that makes a tour, one that travels from place to place for pleasure or culture and one that stays overnight usually at an inn or motel".
9 Firstly, it is important to recognize that in everyday use the term "tourism" does not refer to work, but to one form of leisure activity. Like sports, hobbies and pastimes, it is supposed to renew our vigor and strength for the workdays and is a discretionary use of our leisure time. Secondly, tourism involves travel, or moving away from work and home. For some, it is to have a vacation, to find relaxation from tensions and to be removed from a ringing telephone. And thirdly, tourism usually though not necessarily incurs money expenditure. When one travels away from home, it is necessary for him to use a certain means of transportation and to have food and shelter if he is away for more than one day. As a result, a lot of people have developed a thriving business catering to tourists. In a word, tourism is a movement of people that gives rise to a variety of economic activities.
