Example Essay: Should College Education Be Free?

As the cost of college tuition continues to rise, there

is a debate over whether or not college education should be

free. In this essay, I will discuss the different

perspectives on this issue and offer my own opinion.

Firstly, some people believe that college education

should be free. They argue that education is a basic human

right and should not be limited to those who can afford it.

For example, in countries like Germany and Finland, college education is free and accessible to all. From this

perspective, free education would lead to a more educated

and equal society.

On the other hand, others argue that college education

should not be free. They believe that education is a

privilege, not a right, and should be earned through hard

work and dedication. For instance, if college education

were free, it would lead to an influx of unprepared and

unmotivated students who would not take their education

seriously. Therefore, free education would devalue the

importance of a college degree.

However, there are also those who hold a different

viewpoint. They contend that college education should be

partially free. They maintain that the government should

offer scholarships and grants to students who demonstrate

financial need and academic merit. An illustration of this

is the Pell Grant program in the United States. As a result,

this would make college education more accessible to low-income students and encourage academic excellence.

In my opinion, I believe that college education should

be partially free. This is because education is a valuable

asset that should be accessible to all, regardless of their

financial situation. However, it should also be earned

through academic achievement and hard work. For instance, a

student who demonstrates financial need and academic merit

should be eligible for scholarships and grants.

Consequently, this would create a more equal and educated

society.

In conclusion, there are a variety of viewpoints on

whether or not college education should be free. However,

after considering all the perspectives, I believe that

partial free education is the most reasonable and

beneficial course of action.
