Chapter 1 Introduction
• 1.1Background • Tradition way people lived: 交通基本靠“走” ----travel on foot, by bicycle, or on horseback 通讯基本靠“吼” ----face to face, or in writing 保安基本靠“狗” ----dogs for security 取暖基本靠“抖” ----tremble with cold
1.Features (1).These satellites are in orbit 35863 km above the earth’s surface along the equator. (2).Objects in Geostationary orbit revolve around the earth at the same speed as the earth rotates.
1.2 The features of Satellite Communications 1.Advantages of satellite
• • • • Wide area coverage Wide bandwidth Fast set-up & reconfiguration and Low cost Availability where terrestrial alternatives are poor or non-existent • Little affect from terrestrial disaster
Satellite communications
课程特点
• • • • • 课程形式:Bilingual Course 学时:40 lecture hours Location:教406 Class Schedule : (1) Monday 8:00am – 9:45am (1,2) .The first week – the eighth week • (2) Wednesday 1:30pm – 3:15pm (5,6) The first week –the sixteenth week
(1). Fixed Satellite Service (FSS) Telephone network Television signal distribution Free TV and Cable TV (2). Broadcasting Satellite Service (BSS) DBS (Direct Broadcasting Satellite) DTH(Direct To Home) (3). Mobile Satellite Service (MSS) Mobile Maritime mobile
1.4 Types of satellites
• 按轨道分:GEO,LEO,MEO,HEO
GEO LEO
Geostationary orbit Low Earth Orbit
36000 km above earth surface 500 - 1500 km
MEO HEO
Medium Earth Orbit or ICO 6000 - 20000 km (Intermediate Circular Orbit) Highly Elliptical Orbit elliptical orbits
1.4.2 Low Earth Orbit (LEO)
1.Features (1).LEO satellites are much closer to the earth than GEO satellites, ranging from 500 to 1,500 km above the surface. (2). LEO satellites don’t stay in fixed position relative to the surface, and are only visible for 15 to 20 minutes each pass. (3).A network of LEO satellites is necessary for LEO satellites to be useful
Cellular/Mobile Communication
Satellite Communication
Inter Satellite Link (ISL) Gateway Link (GWL) small cells (spotbeams) MUL GWL
Mobile User Link (MUL)
3. Disadvantages (1).A GEO satellite’s distance also cause it to have both a comparatively weak signal and a time delay in the signal, which is bad for point to point communication. (2).GEO satellites, centered above the equator, have difficulty broadcasting signals to near polar regions
2.Advantages (1). A GEO satellite’s distance from earth gives it a large coverage area, almost a fourth of the earth’s surface. (2). GEO satellites have a 24 hours view of a particular area. These factors make it ideal for satellite broadcast and other multipoint applications.
Orbit Types
MEO 6000 - 20000 km
HEO 500 to 30,000 km
LEO 500 - 1500 km
GEO 36,000km
