There is something about New Year’s Eve. In Scotland the last day of the year is the most important holiday

of winter, more important than Christmas. On New Year’s Eve friends and neigbors go about from house to house

drinking to each other’s health and wishing good luck. On New Year’s Day all shops and factories are closed and

no work is done. Families meet together for a big meal and a family party.

In England New Year’s Day is not a holiday and people go to work as usual. But on New Year’s Eve most

people sit up till midnight “to see the New Year in” or they go to parties and dances. Most of the big London

hotels have a New Year’s Eve dance.
