Britain played an important part in developing the first generation of computers. The parents of Tim Berners?Lee both worked on one of the earliest commercial computers and talked about their work at home. As a child he would build models of computers from packaging material. After graduating from Oxford University he went on to the real thing. In the 1980's, scientists were already using a primitive version (原始版本) of e?mail. While working at a laboratory in Switzerland Tim Berners?Lee wrote a programme which let him store these messages. In 1990 he wrote the HTTP (服务程序所用的协议) and HTML (超文本链接标示语言) programmes which form the basis of the World Wide Web.The next year his programmes were placed on to the Internet. Everyone was welcome to use them and improve them if they could. Programmers used his codes to work with different operating systems. New things like web browsers (浏览器) and search engines were developed. Between 1991 and 1994 the number of web pages rose from 10 to 100, 000.In 1994 Tim Berners?Lee formed the newly formed World Wide Web Consortium (协会) or W3C.More than 200 leading companies and laboratories are represented (代表) by W3C.Together they make sure that everyone can participate equally on the Web.1.The main idea of this passage is ________.A.when the Internet appearedB.how Tim Berners?Lee formed W3CC.why computers develop so rapidlyD.how the World Wide Web started2.Scientists began to use e?mail ________.A.in 1980 B.after the 1980'sC.in the 1980's D.in the 1960's3.Which of the following is NOT true?A.The number of web pages rose very rapidly in the 1990's.B.Tim's programmes were placed on to the Internet in 1990.C.The World Wide Web will have an effect (影响) on social development.D.Tim Berners-Lee made a great contribution to the computer science.课下能力提升(一)Ⅰ.1.attack 2.disappeared 3.obvious4.offer 5.destruction 6.affected7.harm8.rapidly9.flooded10.crashedⅡ.1.up 2.global 3.attacked 4.the; of 5.why 6.with7.true8.has affectedⅢ.1.as if it's going to rain 2.It's a pity that3.It's obvious thatⅣ.1.rapidly 2.about 3.and 4.However5.the 6.entertainment7.disappear8.reality9.that/which10.aⅤ.语篇解读:本文是一封回信, 回答了来信中提出的问题, 并对有兴趣从事新闻工作的人提出了建议。

But parents, teachers, and instructors often push us into fixed mindsets by encouraging certain actions and misdirecting praise.Dweck’sbook,Mindset:TheNewPsychologyofSuccess, and online instructional programme explainthis in depth. But she says there are many little things you can start doing today to make sure that your children, grandchildren and even you are never defeated by failure.1.What does the author think about the present generation?A.They don’t do well at school.B.They are often misunderstood.C.They are eager to win in sports.D.They are given too much praise.2.A fixed mindset person is probably one who .A.doesn’t want to work hardB.cares a lot about personal safetyC.cannot share his ideas with othersD.can succeed with the help of teachers3.What does the growth mindset believe?A.Admitting failure is shameful.B.Talent es with one’s birth.C.Scores should be highly valued.D.Getting over difficulties is enjoyable.4.What should parents do for their children based on Dweck’s study?A.Encourage them to learn from failures.B.Prevent them from making mistakes.C.Guide them in doing little things.D.Help them grow with praise.BMiles was born in Alton,a city on the Mississippi River in Illinois on May26,es’s father was a dentist, while his mother was a music es had a good childhood, catching fish and riding horses with his older sister and younger brother. He was known as a naughty boy in school. He recalls his story,“By the age of 12,music had bee the most important thing in my life.” His mother,a violinist herself, dearly wanted her son to play theviolin. But brass(铜管乐器) was Miles’s calling, and he remembers argu ments between their parents as his dad overruled his mom to fight his son’s corner. He received his first trumpet(喇叭) in 1935 and began weekly music lessons with his father’s friend Mr Elwood, his lifelong teacher.Talking about his schooldays,Miles said that Mr Buchanan was the biggest influence on his life.He was the person who took Miles all the way into music at that time.He wanted to be a musician that he had dreamed. When he was 16,Miles met his girlfriend,Irene Birth.Although she was a beautiful young woman in many ways,it was her easygoing character that attracted Miles. At the weekends,Miles and Irene would take the bus over the Mississippi River to St Louis to watch movies and go dancing.Although Miles was too shy to really enjoy dancing,he always felt confident when he danced with Irene. When he turned 17,she persuaded him to ask for a job in a band.It worked.Joining the band was a breakthrough for Miles, and marked the time when he first began towrite and arrange music.5.What can we learn from Paragraph 1?es had no schooling in his childhood.es had a fortable family.es’s parents were strict with him.es caught fish for meals.6.What does the underlined phrase “fight his son’s corner” in Paragraph 2 mean?A.Help Mother to beat Miles.B.Hit Miles in the corner.C.Defend Miles’s choice.D.Prevent Miles from choosing music.7.Who influenced Miles most in music according to the text?A.His father.B.His mother.C.Mr Elwood.D.Mr Buchanan.四、语篇填空Marie Curie is probably the most famous woman scientist who has ever1.(live).Born in Poland in 1867,she was famous for her work on radioactivity, and was twice a2. second novel,DemoninMyView, also reached thebookstores.Several books later, the teenage author still continuously works in her room, surrounded by shelves full of dark tales about vampires(吸血鬼) and witches(女巫).AmeliaAtwater-Rhodes is widel y seen as America’s finest teen writer and was named one of Teen People’s “20 Teens Who Will Change the World”.Born in 1984,she began making up stories when she was about three years old.“I never stopped and said ‘I want to write’,” Amelia remembers.“I lo ved stories and created stories before I was old enough to know how to write them down.”In her family, reading was basic and fun.“My parents encouraged me to read—and to read anything I wanted,so long as I was reading,” she said.“They never limited what I ter, when I started writing, they never criticized what I did or said I was ‘too young’.They never said it was impossible for me to achieve what I have.”In her short but successful career,Amelia has tried different styles. But vampires were Writer Pens Vampire TalesBBack in the early s,lots of people couldn’t have imagined life without alarm clocks,CD players, calendars, cameras,or lots of other devices. But along came the iPhone and other smartphones, and theytook over the functions of dozens of things we used to think were essential. The smartphone story could even be a model for fighting climate change;not because smartphones use a small part of the energy of all the things they replace—although they do—but because they represent a different approach to design in general. And that approach is to focus on function rather than form. That requires focusing on understanding the underlying problem, and then engineering a wide range of potential solutions. This approach could revolutionize how we think about energy efficiency.Traditionally, improvements in energy efficiency have mostly focused on individual devices, which can be quite fruitful. But focusing on individual devices is like if Apple had spent effort inventing a better alarm clock,a better CD player,a better calendar, and a better camera. Now with an iPhone,we don’t need the standalone devices at all, because it can function as all of them. So,when it comes to using energy efficiently, rather than just installing a more efficient heater, some people have focused insteadon the desired function:staying warm. They designed and coated their house so well that they could get rid of their heater altogether, letting them heat their house with 99% less energy. In the same way, rather than just making cars moreefficient, what if we focus on the desired function—getting where we want when we want—and create an efficient transportation system where we can drive less or get rid of our personal cars entirely? The most energy efficient car or heater is no car,or no heater, while still being able to get around and stay warm.In other words,it’s not thinking efficiently. It’s thinking differently.5.What makes the iPhone a good eental protection?A.Perfecting individual devices.bining possible functions.C.Adopting a simplest design.D.Reducing the energy consumption.6.According to the passage, what is the core of improving energy efficiency?ing recyclable materials.B.Revolutionizing technologies.C.Figuring out various solutions.D.Concentrating on the essential needs.7.What does the author think of traditional practices in energy improvements?A.Conventional.B.Out-of-date.C.Adequate.D.Perfect.8.What can we learn from the passage?A.Think out of the boake it unique.C.Be economical with energy.D.Step out of the comfort zone.CJason Allen,a video game designer in Pueblo,Colorado, spent about 80 hours working on his entry to the Colorado State Fair’s digital arts competition.Judges awarded him first place, which came with a $300 prize.Allen’s victory took a turn when he revealed online that he’d created his prize-winning art using Midjourney,an artificial intelligence (AI) program that can turn teages. He says he also made that clear to state fair officials when he dropped off his submission (提交) called ThéátreD’péraSpatial.Colorado’s 150-year-old state fair is held each summer in Pueblo,a town about 185 kilometers south of Denver. The fair’s submission guidelines do not directly mention AI-generated art,but they define (定义) digital arts as “artistic practice that uses digital technology as part of the creative or presentation process”.The competition’s two judges say they were unaware that Allen had used AI to create his piece. But even if they had known, they still would have given him first place. They said they awarded the top prize based on the story ThéátreD’péraSpatial tells,as well as the spirit it inspires.Allen created ThéátreD’péraSpatial by entering various words and phrases into Midjourney, which then produced more than 900versions for him to choose from.He selected his three favorites, and then continued adjusting them in Photoshop until he was satisfied. He boosted their resolution (分辨率) using a tool called Gigapixel and printed the works. He entered all three pieces into the competition, and one of them won.Allen said he believes the criticism of his work originates from artists’ fear that technology will one day become so advanced that they’ll be out of jobs.In the meantime,as state fair spokesperson Alga Robak says,it’s bringing out “a broader conversation about ho w we decide what art is,and how we judge it appropriately”.9.What does the underlined word “that” refer to in paragraph 2?A.Taking a turn.B.Revealing the truth online.C.Turning teages.D.Applying an AI program to the creation.10.Why did the two judges award Allen first place?A.He followed guidelines for AI-generated art.B.They were unaware of the use of ad in his piece.C.He is a pioneer of using digital technology in creation.D.They are impressed with the ideas that his works present.11.What is the text mainly about?A.How Allen created his works.B.What AI technologies Allen used.C.Why Allen chose to employ Midjourney.D.Where the advantage of Allen’s works lay.12.What can we learn about Allen’s victory according to the text?A.It costs artists their job.B.It helps enhance AI technology.C.It ensures fairness in arts competitions.D.It generates a discussion on defining art.Ⅱ.七选五(湖北部分省级示范高中期中测试)Today it is common to see people who walk about with colored wires hanging from their ears wherever they go.They move about in their personal bubbles, sometimes unaware of what’s happeningaround them. They walk around in their own spaces, with their personal “digital noise reduction systems”. 1 So are you one of “them”?For me,walking around in my own personal bubble isperfect. After all,I am listening to my favourite music and would rather not be bothered. What’s even better, wearing earphones seems to give a signal to people which says,“ 2 ”Suppose you’re at work and about to make an incredible advance, but a colleague suddenly turns up.His sudden appearance would break your concentration and cause mistakes. 3 Once again, those wires hanging from your ears would be sure to give that “Go away!” signal.4 It’s probably part of the growing up stage when they just want to ignore their whole family. While their mothers give them lectures about why they should do their homework, they can just turn up the volume on their MP3 player, smile, and say,“Yes,Mum.” Problem solved.Pretty soon, not only will we have pretty colored wires hanging from our ears, but also our brains will be directly filled with some new high-tech instruments. We’ll be in a virtualworld, communicating with everyone else,or choosing not to,as we like. 5 And they are changing our social habits along the way.In the end, there is a thin line between using technology as a tool for making life better and being controlled by it!It’s so strange—suddenly,I don’t feel like wearing my earphones anymore.A.Outside life is shut out.B.Our devices are changing quickly.C.I also have wires hanging from my ears.D.I’m not available for chatting at the moment!E.In the home situation, teenagers are attracted to these wires.F.I don’t have the responsibility to deal with the noise from the environment.G.Listening to music through earphones is the perfect way to ignore such trouble.Ⅲ.完形填空For many years,I was so wrapped up in my kids and my family that I ignored how I looked. The words The Sound of Music (extract)(In fro nt of the Von Trapp’s house,Maria wonders at its grandeur. She knocks at the door.A man appears.)M:Hello, here I am!I’m from the convent.I’m the new governess,Captain. Franz:And I’m your butler,Fraulein.M:Oh,well, how do you do? Hmm.Franz:Wait here, please.(While waiting,Maria enters a hall.It is such a magnificent hall, that she can’t help dancing. The Captain appears.)Captain (Short for C):Why do you stare at me that way?M:Well, you don’t look at all like a sea captain, sir.C:I’m afraid you don’t look much like a governess.Turn around,please.M:What?C:Turn.Hat off. It’s the dress. You have to put on another one before you meet the children.M:But I don’t have another one. When we enter the abbey, our worldly clothes are given to the poor.C:What about this one?M:The poor didn’t want this one.C:Hmm.M:I would have made myself a new dress but there wasn’t time.I can make my own clothes. C:Well,I’ll see that you get some material.Today,if possible.Now,Fraulein...er... M:Maria.C:Fraulein Maria,I don’t know how m uch the Mother has told you?M:Not much.C:You’re the twelfth in a long line of governesses, who have come to look after my children since their mother died.I trust that you will be an improvement on the last one.She stayed only two hours.M:What’s wrong wi th the children, sir?C:There was nothing wrong with the children, only the governesses. They were completely unable to maintain discipline.Without it,the house cannot be properly run. Please remember that,Fraulein.M:Yes,sir.C:Every morning you will drill the children in their studies.I will not permit them to dream away their summer holidays. Each afternoon they will march about the ground, breathing deeply.Bedtime is to be strictly observed. No exceptions.M:Excuse me,sir. When do they play?C:You’ll see to it that they conduct themselves at all time with the utmost orderliness and decorum.I’m placing you in command.M:Yes,sir.(Captain blows his whistle. After slamming of doors, the children appear on the terrace in a line, and then walk down one by one.)C:Now,this is your new governess,Fraulein Maria. As I sound your signals, you will step forward and give your name. You,Fraulein, will listen carefully.Learn their signal so you can call them when you want them.Liesl:Liesl.Frederick:Frederick.Louisa:Louisa.Kurt:Kurt.Bargitta:Bargitta.Marta:Marta.(The youngest girl steps forward.)C:And Gretl. Now,let’s see how well you listened.M:Oh,I won’t need to whistle for them,Reverend Captain.I mean,I’ll use their names. And such lovely names.C:Fraulein, this is a large house. The grounds are very extensive.I will not have anyone shouting. You will take this, please.Learn to use it.The children will helpyou. Now,when I want you, this is what you will hear.M:No,sir.I’m sorry, sir.I could never answer to a whistle.Whistles are for dogs and cats and other animals but not for children and definitely not for me.It would be too humiliating.C:Fraulein, were you this much trouble at the abbey?M:Oh,much more,sir.C:Hmm.M:Excuse me,sir,I don’t know your signal.C:You may call me Captain.(Captain leaves.)M:At ease.Well now that there’s just us.Would you please tell me what are your names again and how old you are?Liesl:I’m Liesl.I’m sixteen years old and I don’t need a governess.M:Well,I’m glad you told me,Liesl. We’ll just be good frie nds.Frederick:I’m Frederick.I’m fourteen.I’m impossible.M:Really? Don’t you think it’s ugly?Kurt:Of course, but Fraulein Helder’s was ugliest.I’m Kurt.I’m eleven.I’m incorrigible.M:Congratulations!Kurt:What’s incorrigible?M:I think it means you won’t be treated like a boy.Marta:I’m Marta and I’m going to be seven on Tuesday. And I’d like a pink parasol. M:Well, pink is my favorite color, too.Yes,you’re Gretl, and you’re f ive years old? Frederick:You must never come to dinner on time.Bargitta:Never eat your soup quietly.Kurt:And during dessert always blow your nose.Gretl:Don’t believe a word they say,Fraulein Maria.M:Oh,why not?Gretl:Because I like you.Frau Schmidt:All right now, children!Outside for your walk.Father’s orders. Now,hurry up!Hurry up!Quick,Quick...Fraulein Maria,I’m Frau Schmidt, the housekeeper. M:How do you do!Frau Schmidt:How do you do!I’ll show you to your room.Follow me.(On the way to her room,Maria feels something strange in her pocket. It is a toad. She cries out and throws it away. The children watch this and leave in ter the dinner is served,Maria is late.)M:Good evening.Good evening, children.Children:Good evening,Fraulein Maria.(Without noticing a pinecone on her chair,Maria sits on it,jumps up with pain and immediately.)M:Ha Ha.C:Enchanting little tune.Something you learned at the abbey?M:No,erm...it’s eh...rheumatism.(Sits down again) Excuse me,Captain, haven’t we forgotten to thank the Lord? For what we are about to receive, may the Lord make us truly thankful.Amen.C:Amen.M:I’d like to thank each and every one of you for the precious gift you left in my pocket earlier today.C:Erm...What gift?M:It’s meant to be a secret between the children and me.C:Aha.Then I suggest that you keep it and let us eat.M:Knowing how nervous I must have been.A stranger in the new household.Knowing how important it was for me to feel accepted. It was so kind and thoughtful of you to make my first moments here so warm and happy and pleasant.(Marta crying.)C:What is the matter,Marta?Marta:Nothing.(The children burst into tears one by one.)C:Fraulein,is it to be at every meal or merely a dinnertime that you intend to lead us all to this rare and wonderful new world of indigestion?M:They’re all right,Captain. They’re just happy.Reading comprehending:Ⅰ.Write down the main characters of the play.Von Trapp;Fraulein Maria;Liesl;Frederick;Louisa;Kurt;Bargitta;Marta;Gretl Ⅱ.The film tells about living a life happily, and the best way to find happiness in life is to be optimistic and determined to create happiness by means of music. Can you list more nouns to describe the story of love and family?Use the mind map below to help you.Ⅲ.Writing:Watch the film The Sound of Music, and write a 120-word film review.参考译文(在冯·特拉普家门前,玛丽亚为其壮观感到吃惊。
