Comparison and Translation of English andChinese Color WordAbstractThe tendency of worldwide economic globalization has been intensified, and people have close exchanges in almost every fields. The role of culture in the interaction between people from all nations is becoming extremely crucial. This paper discusses the translating and contrast of color words in China and the West, which mostly involves three sections, the definition and the differences of color words, the contrast with color words and methods used in translation in English and Chinese. Meanwhile, the first part contains three respects, namely, the definition, categories that consists of basic color words, color words with colors of objects and color words in shades, as well as the reasons for the discrepancies in color words, which includes the different ethnic beliefs lead to differences in color words, influence of different modes of thinking and representation on color words and influence of different political systems and social differences on color words. And the second part mainly covers six respects, namely, the various implication and usage of color words in these two languages, such as red, black, white, yellow, blue and green. Ultimately, the last part involves two respects, namely, literary translation and free translation that contains cultural equivalence and functional equivalence. By comparing and translating color words about these two kinds of languages, this essay, for one thing, will aim at making a profound analysis of the discrepancies about the utilization of color words about the two languages and the reasons for the discrepancies; for another, the writer expects to offer tiny advice and references on color words in the future.Key Words: Chinese and English color words, comparison, translation摘要随着世界经济全球化的发展，各国人民在政治、经济和文化之间的交往日益密切。

A Contrastive study of color words in Chinese and EnglishAbstract:In human language, the color words are frequently used and endowed with plentiful emotion and cultural connotation. We should pay attention to not only their own basic meaning but also their deeper meaning.Based on the theory of the contrastive linguistics,this paper mainly compares the basic color words in Chinese and English. We can have more perfect command of the two languages and make better cultural communication on the base of understanding their differences.Key Words: red, yellow, green, blue, white, black,Chinese and English1IntroductionPeople live in a colorful world, and words denoting colors form part of the nuclear vocabulary in almost every language. In Chinese, there are 赤、橙、黄、绿、青、蓝、紫are thought to be the basic colors. However, in English it is usually considered there are eleven basic colors, namely white, black, grey, brown, red, green, yellow, blue, purple, orange, and pink.2 The comparison of six kinds of color words between Chinese and EnglishEach color word almost has two meanings, the basic meaning and its cultural extended meaning. In the following, this paper will compare the usage of color words between Chinese and English along with the main clue of red and yellow, green and blue, white and black.2.1 The color of redRed in the Chinese culture is a basic esteem color. it signifies succeeding and lucky. In Chinese traditional wedding, people put up the character 喜, the bride is dressed in red, the bridegroom wears a red flower on his breast. On happy days, people decorate their houses with red lanterns and doublets. In Chinese, red has the most pronounced political color, and is frequently used to stand for revolution and progress.Such as红卫兵: the red guard, 红色根据地: the red base area. Red also means beautiful and pretty. A lady’s splendid dress is called 红妆.Red in the western culture mainly refers to color of blood,so the westerners always associate red with the violence and dangerous, such as red revenge and a red battle. Red in the west also has commendatory meaning, which is joyous, such as a red-letter day means “a day that is important or remarkable because something happen on it”, and the red carpet is spe cially good or respectful treatment that is given to an important guest.2.2 The color of yellowThe yellow is the representative color of Chinese nation .The yellow symbolized imperial power.黄袍: the emperor’s dress, And 黄道吉日means an auspicious day.However, yellow in modern China has negative meanings, such as黄色录象. while in English are “the blue video”, Yellow in the west mostly has derogatory meanings. Here are some examples:yellow journalism means yellow style of running a newspaper to attract readers with characters or sensational report of low taste.Furthermore, yellow has the meaning of "timid ".If a person is yellow-belly, that is to say "the coward ".2.3 The color of greenIn the feudal society, the dress of the government official on a lower level was regularized to be green, so it also symbolizes humble. 青衫绿袍is a symbol of low position in the official caree.In English ,“Green” can be as the token of “safe”, “hope”, “peace” “health”, and“environment protection”. there is a term green-eyed,it means jealous and envious. In Chinese眼红describes the same meaning. In Chinese 带绿帽子means to be a cuckold. Green is the symbol of vigor and energy, for example, in the green:在年富力强的时候. green also means immature, inexperienced, such as a green hand, a green horn refers to a raw, simple and inexperienced person.2.4 The color of blueIt seems that blue is a favorable word to Chinese.蓝天can arouse us to yearn for a better future.In Western culture, however, blue is always associate with gloom and depression. He is in a blue mood means he is sad or gloomy. Blue is also often associated with high social status or being aristocratic. He is a real blue blood means he is from an aristocratic family. In addition, in U.S., a book with the names of famous figures, especially top government officials, is called blue book. Blue film means erotic film while in Chinese we call it 黄色电影。
