Buenos Aires

A powerful magnitude 7.5 earthquake in Indonesia caused a tsunami (海啸) and swept houses away in

two cities on September 28, 2018.

The death toll(伤亡人数)in the earthquake and the tsunami reached 2,073. The quake and the tsunami

also left 10,679 people injured, with 680 people still missing. The number of people taking shelter in tents

kept growing. Bodies were still being removed from the worst affected areas, where it is estimated that over

1,000 people could still be buried.

Among the victims, 1, 663 were from Palu city, the hardest-hit in the twin disasters, " Most of the

victims were found in Palu and they were hit by tsunami, particularly in the coastal areas, said Sutopo

Purow Nugroho, a National Disaster Mitigation (减轻) Agency spokesman. The remaining deaths were

reported in the nearby districts. Communications with the earthquake-stricken region were cut off, and

rescue efforts were being hampered by darkness.

Later, assistance (援助) was being provided by local governments and non-governmental

organizations, and work on restoring the power supply was ongoing. The European Union, as well as 10

countries, including the United States, Australia and China, have offered assistance. Rescuers are focusing 不积跬步无以至千里,不积小流无以成江海! on repairing roads, ports, airports, telecommunication services, fuel supplies and power, hoping to bring

people's life back on track.

Indonesia is a bad place for earthquakes because of its location in the "Ring of Fire". A massive

magnitude 9.1 earthquake struck off western Indonesia in December 2004. The quake caused a tsunami that

killed 230, 00 people in a dozen countries.
