But I've gained confidence that with diligent practice, I can increase my comprehension more and more. My name is Xiaoming and I'm a 4th grader at Wuhan No. 1 Primary School. Today I want to share my experience with English listening training since it's such an important part of learning English here in Wuhan.When I was just a little kid in 1st grade, English listening felt so strange and difficult. All those new sounds and words I had never heard before! My teachers started us off slow though, playing simple songs and nursery rhymes. I still remember classics like "The Wheels on the Bus" and "If You're Happy and You Know It." Listening to those over and over helped train my ears to the rhythm and sounds of English.In 2nd grade, the listening practice ramped up. We started doing short video lessons almost every day practicing basic conversations and vocabulary. Things like greeting each other, asking for colors and numbers, talking about animals and food.The videos had the English dialogue along with Chinese subtitles at first, but then they took away the subtitles so we could focus just on listening.3rd grade was when English listening felt like it kicked into high gear! We had a special listening class twice a week where we worked on more advanced skills. Our teachers played recordings and videos and we had to answer comprehension questions, fill in blanks, put pictures in order, and other exercises to test our understanding. The topics got trickier too, with longer stories and subject matter beyond just basic vocabulary.Now in 4th grade, the English listening has reached a whole new level. We've started using these really cool English learning apps and software programs on our tablets. The apps have all kinds of interactive listening games and activities that are way more engaging than just doing pencil and paper exercises. My personal favorite is an adventure game where I'm a little explorer who has to follow auditory directions to collect treasures and navigate through jungles and caves. Listening carefully determines whether I succeed or fail!The software we use breaks down everyday conversations and stories into levels, transcribes everything, and lets you loop back difficult sections as many times as needed. There are evensome basic voice recognition exercises where I have to speak certain phrases clearly for it to understand. The lessons automatically adjust based on my performance too. If I'm breezing through, it bumps up the difficulty. If I'm struggling, it will spend more time reviewing before moving on.In addition to the apps and programs, we still do plenty of traditional listening work too. Our textbooks have accompanying audio materials for readings, dialogues, and sample tests that we go through together as a class. We also watch short video clips ranging from educational videos to excerpts from movies and TV shows. After each one, we have to summarize, answer questions, discuss what we heard, and sometimes even act out scenes ourselves.My absolute favorite listening activity though is when our English teachers bring in materials from their own childhood in England and America. They'll play old TV shows they grew up watching, songs they used to sing when they were our age, or recordings of stories their parents used to read to them. I love getting that glimpse into real English listening materials that native speakers experienced as kids. It's a neat way to learn about the cultures behind the language too.English listening training in Wuhan is no joke! Between the apps, programs, textbooks, videos, and creative materials from our teachers, my ears get one heck of a workout every single day. Listening comprehension was definitely the area I struggled most with when I firststarted learning English. But after years of focused training, it's became one of my strongest skills.
