Body Language
According to psychologists, up to two-thirds of communication between humans is
non-verbal. The way you sit or stand and the gestures you make broadcast a powerful message
to the people you meet. While some of these signals may be given consciously, most body
language is involuntary, either instinctive behavior, or unconsciously learned through watching
others. Even if you try to hide it, this secret code can reveal the way you truly feel.
Understanding these subtle signs can indicate whether the person you feel drawn to rejects your
overtures --- or already feels the same way about you.
Our innermost thoughts trigger chemical and emotional changes in the body and we
respond on a physical level by unconsciously altering our posture, expression and mannerisms.
These responses may be subtle movements of the eyes and mouth, or more obvious statements,
Yesterday, another student and I, representing our university's
student association, went to the Capital International Airport to meet this
year's international students. They were coming to study at Beijing
University. We would take them first to their dormitories and then to the
student canteen. After half an hour of waiting for their flight to arrive, I
saw several young people enter the waiting area looking around curiously.
I stood for a minute watching them and then went to greet them.
The first person to arrive was Tony Garcia from Colombia, closely
followed by Julia Smith from Britain. After I met them and then
introduced them to each other, I was very surprised. Tony approached
Julia, touched her shoulder and kissed her on the cheek! She stepped back
appearing surprised and put up her hands, as if in defence. I guessed that

（一）背景分析
21世纪是跨文化交流全球化的时代,随着这种国际交往的日益频繁,人们将面临如何与来自不同国家、不同文化背景的人相互沟通、交流与合作的问题.在涉及跨文化交际的过程中，人们往往注重语言的应用，而忽视非语言的使用，从而引起交际过程出现一些尴尬的现象。了解一定的身势语,既有利于自己的传情达意,也有利于理解别人语言交际中隐含的弦外之音。"身体语言" ，也是我们文化的一部分。本单元将通过具体的场景来向您展示身势语在跨文化交际中所起的举足轻重的作用。
（二）教学内容分析
本单元的中心话题是“身势语”，单元各项活动的设计都围绕这一主题进行。身势语是非语言交际手段中非常重要的一个方面，他通过无声的语言表达一个人的内心世界。与有声语言一样，身势语也是文化的载体，在跨文化交际中起着举足轻重的作用。了解身势语的不同文化含义并正确地加以运用，会在交际场合中起到意想不到的好效果。教师在教授本单元时，可以提醒学生注意自己和他人在日常交际中的体态、姿势、面部表情等等，正确的理解和运用身势语，以达到良好的交际效果。
“热身”（Warming up）部分由两部分组成。练习1是看图讨论活动，提供四幅图片，让学生通过讨论图片交流日常交际的看法。练习2要求学生选择课本提供的15个日常交际用语中的一个，用身势语将其表演出来，让同伴猜测其意义。
“读前”（Pre-reading）部分由四个问题组成。这些问题集中引导学生思考“语言的目的”、“离开语言人们如何交流”、“有多少途径可用非语言手段向人问好”、“预测下面阅读课文的内容”等，这些问题既是对“热身”所引出的话题的总结，又承接了下一步的阅读教学。
“阅读”（Reading）部分以机场迎接客人为场景，讲述了来自几个不同国家的学生由于文化背景的差异，在初次见面时互相问候的方式迥然不同，而造成一些小误会，形象地表明了身势语与文化背景的密切关系，以及身势语在人们日常交际中的重要作用。这篇课文的写作方式颇有特色，可以让学生在阅读的过程中，很自然的以“你”自己的身份去观察、倾听在机场发生的一切。

An old saying goes: "actions speak louder than words." That's true according to communication experts. Some
studies show that up to 90 percent of communication is nonverbal. Though you might you say one thing, your body
movements may indicate something entirely different. This nonverbal way of communicating is called body
language.
The universal language
While body language may differ from country to country, it is the universal language. We all use it even when we
don't realize it.
For example: Your friend comes to you with a problem, and you say you'd like to hear about it. But while she's
talking, you look at your watch and around the room. Your body movements tell her that you're bored, distracted,
in a hurry or all three. Your body language has given you away.
