Children's questions, particularly those about""why"and“how,"support the development of causal mechanisms which can be used to help their day-to-day reasoning.Unfortunately,as Keil notes,“adults greatly underestimate young children's causal mechanisms."In the book,Wonder,Keil shows that we can support children's ongoing wonder by playing games with them as partners, encouraging question-asking,and focusing on their abilities to reason and conclude.A decline in wonder is not unavoidable.Keil reminds us that we can accept wonder as a desirable positive quality that exists in everyone.I value wonder deeply, and Wonder has given me hope by proposing a future for my children that will remain wonder-full.28.What is a common problem among fourth graders?A.They upset their parents too often.B.They ask too many strange questions.C.Their love for fun disappears quickly.D.Their desire to learn declines sharply.29.What can be inferred about children's causal mechanisms in paragraph4?A.They control children's sensitivity.B.They slightly change in early childhood.C.They hardly support children's reasoning.D.They develop through children’s questioning.30.How can parents support children's ongoing wonder according to Keil?A.By monitoring their games.B.By welcoming inquiring minds.C.By estimating their abilities.D.By providing reasonable conclusions.31.What is the text?A.A book review.B.A news report.C.A research paper.D.A children's story.DEach year, the world loses about10million hectares of forest一an area about the size of Iceland一because of cutting down trees. At that rate, some scientists predict the world's forests could disappear in100to200years.To handle it,now researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT)have pioneered a technique to generate wood-like plant materials in a lab. This makes it possible to“grow"a wooden product without cutting down trees. In the lab,the researchers first take cells from the leaves of a young plant. These cells are cultured in liquid medium for two days, then moved to another medium which contains nutrients and two different hormones(激素).By adjusting the hormone levels, the researchers can tune the physical and mechanical qualities of the cells.Next, the researchers use a3D printer to shape the cell-based material, and let the shaped material grow in the dark for three months. Finally, the researchers dehydrate(使脱水)the material, and then evaluate its qualities. They found that lower hormone levels lead to plant materials with more rounded, open cells of lower density(密度),while higher hormone levels contribute to the growth of plant materials with smaller but denser cell structures.Lower or higher density of cell structures makes the plant materials softer or more rigid, helping the materials grow with different wood-like characteristics. What's more,it's to be noted that the research process is about100times faster than the time it takes for a tree to grow to maturity!Research of this kind is ground-breaking.“This work demonstrates the great power of a technology,"says lead researcher,Jeffrey Berenstain."The real opportunity here is to be at its best with what you use and how you use it.This technology can be tuned to meet the requirements you give about shapes, sizes, rigidity, and forms. It enables us to'grow’any wooden product in a way that traditional agricultural methods can't achieve."32.Why do researchers at MIT conduct the research?A.To grow more trees.B.To protect plant diversity.C.To reduce tree losses.D.To predict forest disappearance.33.What does paragraph2mainly tell us about the lab research?A.Its theoretical basis.B.Its key procedures.C.Its scientific evidence.D.Its usual difficulties.34.What does the finding suggest about the plant materials?A.The hormone levels affect their rigidity.B.They are better than naturally grown plants.C.Their cells'shapes mainly rely on their density.D.Their growth speed determines their characteristics.35.Why is the research ground-breaking according to Berenstain?A.It uses new biological materials in lab experiments.B.It revolutionizes the way to make wooden products.C.It challenges traditional scientific theories in forestry.D.It has a significant impact on worldwide plant growth.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

When I think of all the meals she made for us and our clothes she washed, I know that’s a mother’s love language.I suppose that is why the embroidery exists. An Unforgettable OutingCIf you were like the 847 U.S. consumers surveyed in a University of Massachusetts Amherst study, you’d prefer glass and believe it was the most sustainable choice. And you all would be mistaken.“Glass was the most sought-after and most highly valued packaging type,” says Nomzamo Dlamini, lead author of the paper and a Ph.D. scholar in food science. “However, it turns out that glass is among the least sustainable.”Consumers ranked packaging choices from most to least sustainable as follows: glass, carton (纸板), canned, and plastic. But in the case of single-serve orange juice, the most sustainable choice is actually a carton, followed by plastic, then canned, and finally, glass, despite that food packaging sustainability can vary depending on other factors like container and weight.Lifecycle assessments by experts indicate that producing and recycling glass requires significantly more energy compared to plastic, which not only has lower production and end-of-life impacts but is also lighter, reducing transportation energy. Additionally, the steam aseptic sealing (无菌密封) process for plastic containers is more energy-efficient compared to the retort (蒸馏) system used for glass.Using a questionnaire that models real-life situations where consumers evaluate various options and make trade-offs, Dlamini aimed to figure out what consumers believe and prefer about packaging choices.Dlamini points out a mismatch: while many consumers intend to purchase sustainable packaging, in the end the top motivating factor was price—particularly the lowest price—followed by packaging type, product claim and packaging claim. So, the ideal orange juice option for consumers, based on the survey, is priced at $1.10 per 12 oz, packaged in glass, locally produced and labelled as 100% recyclable. The message to the food industry is that consumers are motivated to choose sustainable packaging, as long as the price is right. “These options should be distinctly marked as environmentally friendly, effective and affordable to increase consumers’ motivation and adoption of sustainable packaging for food and drinks,” the paper states.28.What was believed to be the least sustainable packaging option by US consumers?A. Canned.B. Glass.C. Plastic.D. Carton.29.What is a feature of plastic according to Paragraph 4?A. It is cheap to produce.B. It allows light to pass through.C. It takes less energy to recycle.D. It is more flexible to be packed.30.According to Paragraph 6, there is a disagreement between _______.A. packaging claim and scientific facts.B. high price and unsatisfactory quality.C. product claim and their practical performance.D. consumers’ intentions and their actual behavior.31.What does Dlamini suggest the food industry do in the last paragraph?A. Price smartly and promote widely.B. Label clearly and price reasonably.C. Package securely and deliver quickly.D. Research effectively and invest wisely.D“Holiday” or “vacation,” “my friend’s cat” or “the cat of my friend” —in our language, there are different ways of expressing the same things and concepts. But can these choices affect our inclination to cooperate with certain individuals? A research team led by Theresa Matzinger from the University of Vienna investigated this and found that people are more likely to team up with those who use similar linguistic (语言的) expressions in a conversation. In an experiment, 100 English-speaking study participants each described pictures for two conversation partners. The pictures showed situations that the participants could describe using two different grammatical constructions that meant the same thing, such as “John gives Mary the book” or “John gives the book to Mary.” Next, the participants’ roles were switched and they received picture descriptions of their partners. Finally, when they had to decide whom they wanted to cooperate with for a subsequent game, most participants chose people who spoke similarly and used the same grammatical construction. In a follow-up experiment with the same participants, researchers tried to get a better sense of this phenomenon. They questioned whether it was due to recognizing similar speakers as part of their social group, which enhanced cooperation, or because similar speech indicated a willingness to adjust one’s behavior to fit with others. This time, participants had to name pictures using the grammatical construction that sounded less natural to them. When choosing cooperation partners afterward, they favored those who matched their natural language use over those who resembled (相似) the language they used in the experiment. This suggests that a sense of belonging to the same social group, based on natural linguistic expression, is the more decisive factor in choosing cooperation partners.“Our study shows that even small linguistic differences can affect the way we recognize and respond to others,” Matzinger summarizes. The researchers hope to use the results to better understand how cooperative decisions are made within linguistically diverse groups andhelp reduce prejudices against people who speak differently.32.What does the underlined word “inclination” in Paragraph 1 mean?A. techniqueB. preferenceC. performanceD. responsibility33.What can be learned about the first experiment?A.

AI got invited to go with some friends to a game atanother school. A senior will be driving us, and I thinkshe’s a good driver, but it’s someone my parents don’tknow. I want to tell my parents where I’m going, butwhat if I ask and they say “no”? I’ll end up wishing Inever mentioned it and just went ahead and did itanyway. If you want more privileges, it’s best to build a track record of honesty and trust. Letting a parent know where you’re going is always a good idea. You may worry that telling your pare nts puts you at risk of getting “no” for an answer. Butthere’s a good chance your parents might be OK with you going. If you go but don’t tell them, you risk losing something more important —your parents’ trust.Parents who find out their kids did something behind their backs may be less likely to give permission to do things in the future. When trust is broken like this, parents wonder if teens are trying to hide something — and what they imagine can be far worse than the reality. Before you talk to your parents about the game, think about which approach will help them feel most comfortable with giving you more freedom. Maybe they’d like to meet the person driving or talk to friends who have driven with her in the past. If your parents have questions or hesitate about letting you go, find out what their worries are and then do your best to answer them.21.From Paragraph 1 we know that the writer _________.A. appears nervousB. looks worriedC. feels confusedD. seems discouraged22.What is the best way to get parents’ permission according to the passage?A. To get more privileges from them.B. To risk gaining their permission.C. To keep off the track of reality.D. To be honest and win their trust.23.What does the writer really want to tell us?A. How to win over parents.B. How to deal with strict parents.C. Which effective approach to use.D. How to get freedom from parents.24.Who do you think the passage is intended for?A. Parents.B. Friends.C. Drivers.D. Teenagers.BWhat are you feeling right n ow as you start to read this? Are you curious? Hope that you’ll learn something about yourself? Bored because this is something you have to do for school and you’re not really into it —or happy because it’s a school project you enjoy? Perhaps you’reattracted by something else, like feeling excited about your weekend plans or sad because you just went through a breakup.Emotions(情感)like these are part of human nature. They give us information about what we’re experiencing and help us know how to react. We sense our emotions from the time we’re babies. Young children react to their emotions with facial expressions or with actions like laughing or crying. They feel and show emotions, but they don’t yet have the ability to name the emotion or say why they feel that way.As we grow up, we become more skilled in understanding emotions. Instead of just reacting like little kids do, we can identify what we feel and put it into words. With time and practice, we get better at knowing what we are feeling and why. This skill is called emotional awareness.Emotional awareness helps us know what we need and want, or don’t want! It helps us build better relationships. That’s because being aware of our emotions can help us talk about feelings more clearly, avoid or settle conflicts better, and move past difficult feelings more easily. Some people are naturally more in touch with their emotions than others. The good news is that everyone can be more aware of their emotions. It just takes practice. But it’s worth the effort. Emotional awareness is the first step toward building emotional intelligence, a skill that can help people succeed in life.25.What can we learn from Paragraph 1?A. Types of emotions.B. The topic to discuss.C. Part of human nature.D. Ways to react to things.26.How do young children react to emotions?A. With laughter and shouts.B. With signs and expressions.C. With gestures of different kinds.D. With facial expressions and actions.27.From the passage we know that emotional awareness actually _________.A. enables us to live in society more easilyB. lets people understand others betterC. brings about conflicts between peopleD. smooths away difficulties in our life28.Where is the passage probably taken from?A. A science fiction.B. An advertisement.C. A science magazine.D. A television show.CThough for many of us the year ahead may look pretty depressing, 2016 promises one great breakthrough —a major step toward ending Africa’s particular and backward form of the great Digital Divide.Poor connectivity has bedeviled much of the continent’s internet access but now a huge improvement is coming. It’s a new sub-sea cable, to be laid off Africa’s eastern coastline, enabling a reliable and affordable international connectivity service to both coastal and landlocked countries in Eastern, Central and Southern Africa. The project is being developed by Liquid Sea, an offshore branch of Liquid Telecom, which already runs a pan-African network based on land cable supported by satellite links for rural and remote areas. Altogether, with offices from South Africa and Botswana in the south to Kenya in the East, taking in Democratic Republic of Congo in the center, it makes up the continent’s largest single connecting network crossing multiple national borders.Africa has benefited in many ways from the digital revolution, but internet coverage still differs from place to place. And the unpleasant truth is that, despite some great advance in African development over the last decade and more, its effects are unequal and taken as a whole, less than 16 percent of Africans have access to the Internet, which compares that with 63 percent of Europeans and 79 percent of North Americans. It’s obvious what a disadvantage is placed upon Africans by such digital inequality. The economics of the entire process is skewed(歪的)by poor network performance in Africa, with the total bandwidth available to shuttle data back and forth between African countries and the rest of the world amounting to less than 1 terabit per second. That’s about one-seventieth of Europe’s international bandwidth capacity(容量).Now Liquid Sea’s underwater cable stretching from eastern South Africa to the Middle East, with onward connections to Europe, aims to contribute much more in building Africa’s better connected digital future.29.What does “bedeviled” most probably mean in Paragraph 2?A. attractedB. troubledC. worsenedD. contributed30.What would the Internet be like in Africa in the future?A. Dependable and inexpensive .B. Accessible and comfortable.C. Central and controllable.D. Possible and comparable.31.What is implied in the passage?A. International bandwidth capacity makes no difference.B. Internet connections improve the equality in Africa.C. Poor internet access limits the economy of Africa.D. Africa is now far beyond developed countries.32.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A. Unsafe Internet access in AfricaB. Digital-gap narrowing in AfricaC. Bandwidth available in AfricaD. Great Digital Divide in AfricaDHere are some of the best TV shows in Britain, on Wednesday, February 17th, 2016.33.What kind of person is Mary Portas?A. A woman of big trouble.B. A woman of new fashion.C. A woman with great love.D. A woman with strong determination.34.The on-going drama Dickensian is pieced together by _________.A.
