穿靴子的猫一个磨粉匠给他的三个儿子留下了自己仅有的财产:一盘石磨、一头驴子和一只猫。
三兄弟既没有请公证人,也没有雇辩护人,就很快分了这些东西。
如果雇请这些人,这点可怜的遗产还不够付他们的酬金呢。
大哥拿了石磨,二哥得了驴子,而小弟弟只分得了那只猫。
小弟弟拿到这么一份可怜的财产,心里很悲伤。
“大哥二哥要是合伙干,就能体面地谋生了,”他说。
“可是我呢,即使吃掉了猫肉,再把猫皮做一副袖笼,到头来也只能饿死。
”猫听了这番话,装作没听见。
他稳重而严肃地对主人说:“请你不必烦恼,我的主人。
只要你能给我一个口袋,另外再给我一双靴子,让我能在荆棘地上走路,那么你就会发现,你拿到的这份财产,并不像你想的那么差劲。
”主人虽然不太相信他的话,但他倒见过这只猫在捉耗子的时候很能玩弄灵巧的花招,还会倒挂着身子或者躲在面粉里装死。
因此他想,猫也许能帮助他摆脱贫困,所以对猫的话并没有完全失望。
猫得到了所要的那些东西。
他勇敢地穿上靴子,把口袋系在脖子上,用两只前爪握住袋口的绳子,到一座有很多兔子居住的树林里去了。
他在口袋里放了一些米糠和莴苣,然后躺在地上装死,等待那些年轻的、还不大懂得世上圈套的兔子进到袋子里来吃。
他刚刚躺下就交了好运气:一只冒冒失失的年轻兔子钻进了他的口袋里。
猫立刻把绳子一拉,毫不留情地把他捉住并且勒死了。
猫得意洋洋地带着他的猎物去王宫求见国王。
他被引进国王的住处后,向国王深深地鞠了一躬,说:“陛下,这只野兔子是我的主人卡拉巴侯爵(这是他为主人随意编造的名字)委托我奉献给您的。
”“告诉你的主人,”国王回答说,“我谢谢他,他的礼物使我很高兴。
”第二天,猫出去躺在麦地里,还是握住那只张开口的袋子。
当两只鹧鸪进到里面时,他一抽绳子,把它们双双捉住了。
随后,他又像上次那样把它们送给了国王。
国王愉快地收下了这对鹧鸪,还赏了他一些钱。
就这样,猫经常以他主人的名义向国王贡献猎物。
他用这种方法干了两三个月。
有一天,他得知国王要去一条河边游玩,并且带着他的女儿——世界上最美丽的公主——同行。
